Instruction Manual: 35KN Dual-Purpose Stainless Steel Release Hook

For Rescue Boats and Life Rafts

1. Product Overview

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of the 35KN dual-purpose stainless steel release hook. Designed for critical marine applications, this hook facilitates the secure attachment and rapid release of rescue boats and life rafts. Its robust stainless steel construction ensures durability and reliability in harsh marine environments.

2. Safety Information

  • Always inspect the hook for damage or wear before each use.
  • Ensure all locking mechanisms are fully engaged before lifting any load.
  • Do not exceed the Safe Working Load (SWL) specified for the hook.
  • Only trained personnel should operate this equipment.
  • Familiarize yourself with both manual and automatic release procedures.

3. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe operation of the release hook. This hook is designed for secure attachment to rescue boats or life rafts, typically via a davit system.

  1. Mounting Surface Preparation: Ensure the mounting surface on the rescue boat or life raft is clean, flat, and structurally sound to support the hook's maximum load.
  2. Secure Attachment: Use appropriate marine-grade fasteners (not included) to securely attach the hook's mounting plate to the designated point. Refer to the boat/raft manufacturer's guidelines for specific fastener requirements and torque settings.
  3. Verify Stability: After installation, perform a visual inspection to ensure the hook is firmly attached and shows no signs of movement or instability.
  4. Check Release Mechanism: Before connecting to a load, test the release mechanism to ensure it operates smoothly and without obstruction.

4. Operating Instructions

The release hook features both a locked position and options for manual or automatic release. Always ensure the hook is in the correct mode for the intended operation.

4.1. Locking the Hook

  1. Ensure the hook is clear of any obstructions.
  2. Push the main hook mechanism into the closed position.
  3. Insert the red safety pin (as shown in Figure 4) through the designated hole to secure the hook in the "LOCKED" position. Verify that the pin is fully seated and cannot be easily removed.
  4. Confirm the indicator on the hook (if present, see Figure 3) shows "LOCKED".

4.2. Manual Release

Manual release is used when controlled deployment is required.

  1. Ensure the load on the hook is fully supported by the water or another stable surface, and there is no tension on the hook.
  2. Remove the red safety pin.
  3. Pull the green release handle (as shown in Figure 4) firmly and smoothly to disengage the hook mechanism.
  4. The boat/raft will be released from the davit system.

4.3. Automatic Release (Hydrostatic Release)

This feature is typically used for life rafts and activates automatically under specific conditions (e.g., submersion at a certain depth). Consult the life raft's specific instructions for its hydrostatic release unit.

  1. Ensure the hook is configured for "AUTO RELEASE" mode, if applicable (refer to Figure 3).
  2. The hydrostatic release unit (part of the life raft system, not the hook itself) will activate when submerged to a predetermined depth.
  3. This activation will trigger the release mechanism of the hook, freeing the life raft.
  4. Important: Always follow the life raft manufacturer's instructions for automatic release systems.

5. Maintenance and Care

Regular maintenance will prolong the life and ensure the reliability of your release hook.

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the hook thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt, dirt, and debris.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a marine-grade lubricant to all moving parts and pivot points to ensure smooth operation and prevent corrosion.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the hook for any signs of corrosion, cracks, deformation, excessive wear, or damage to the release mechanism and safety pin. Pay close attention to the load-bearing areas.
  • Storage: Store the hook in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
  • Professional Servicing: It is recommended to have the hook inspected and serviced by qualified marine equipment technicians at least annually, or more frequently depending on usage and environmental conditions.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Hook mechanism stiff or difficult to operate.Corrosion, dirt buildup, lack of lubrication.Clean thoroughly with fresh water, then apply marine-grade lubricant to all moving parts.
Safety pin difficult to insert or remove.Deformation of pin or hole, dirt, corrosion.Clean pin and hole. Inspect for deformation; replace if damaged. Lubricate lightly.
Hook does not fully close or lock.Obstruction, bent components, internal damage.Inspect for obstructions. If none, discontinue use and seek professional inspection/repair.
