3. Installation and Setup

3.1 Safety Precautions

  • WARNING: Always turn off the main power supply at the circuit breaker before performing any electrical work.
  • Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician if you are unsure.
  • Ensure the device is installed in a dry, indoor environment.
  • Do not exceed the maximum resistive load of 10A.

3.2 Wiring Instructions

The BASIC-1GS Gen5 is designed for easy integration with existing wiring. Follow the diagram below for correct connection.

Note: Wiring is limited to 16AWG to 14AWG SOL/STR copper conductors only. The rear-end light needs to be compatible with mainstream brands of LED, energy-saving lamps, and incandescent lamps ranging from 3W to 100W.

3.3 Accessing the Cover

Use the provided installation tool to easily unlock and access the device cover for wiring.

3.4 Device Onboarding and Pairing

The BASIC-1GS Gen5 supports Matter for easy integration into your smart home system.

  1. Ensure your Matter hub (e.g., Apple HomePod, Google Nest Hub, Amazon Echo) is set up and online.
  2. Power on the SONOFF BASIC-1GS Gen5.
  3. Open your preferred smart home app (e.g., Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa app).
  4. Follow the app's instructions to add a new accessory. You may be prompted to scan a QR code located on the device or its packaging, or to hold your smartphone near the device for NFC pairing.
  5. Once detected, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the pairing process.

4. Operation

4.1 Manual Control

The BASIC-1GS Gen5 features an easy-to-press large button for direct manual control. You can also continue to use your existing wall switch to control the connected appliance.

4.2 App Remote Control

Once paired, you can control your connected appliance from anywhere using your smart home app. This includes turning devices on/off, setting schedules, and creating smart scenes.

4.3 Voice Control

The BASIC-1GS Gen5 is compatible with popular voice assistants. Link your device to your Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa account to control it with voice commands.

  • Google Home: "Hey Google, turn off the fan."
  • Amazon Alexa: "Alexa, set the bedroom light to 50%."

4.4 Timer and Scheduling

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

To clean the device, gently wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the device or pose an electrical hazard.

5.2 Firmware Updates

Periodically check your smart home app for available firmware updates. Keeping your device's firmware up-to-date ensures optimal performance, security, and access to new features.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Device not responding:
    • Check if the device has power.
    • Verify your Wi-Fi network is active and the device is within range.
    • Ensure your Matter hub is online and functioning correctly.
    • Try restarting the device by cycling its power.
  • Cannot pair the device:
    • Ensure your smartphone and Matter hub are on the same 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network during pairing.
    • Reset the device to factory settings (refer to the device's specific reset procedure, usually a long press on the button).
    • Ensure your Matter hub is compatible and updated.
  • Voice control not working:
    • Verify the device is correctly linked to your voice assistant account (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa).
    • Check your internet connection.
    • Ensure the device name in your smart home app is recognized by the voice assistant.
