5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the handle of the thermometer.
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert two 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
5.2 Initial Power On
Once batteries are installed, press the trigger to power on the device. The LCD display will light up.
6. Operation
6.1 Basic Temperature Measurement
- Aim the infrared thermometer at the surface of the object you wish to measure.
- Press and hold the trigger. The laser pointer will activate (if enabled) to indicate the measurement spot. The "SCAN" icon will appear on the display.
- Release the trigger to hold the reading. The "HOLD" icon will appear, and the last measured temperature will be displayed.
- The device will automatically shut down after 12 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life.

6.2 Switching Temperature Units (°C/°F)
Press the °C/°F button on the device to toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature units.
6.3 Adjusting Emissivity (EMS)
Emissivity (EMS) is the ability of a material to emit thermal energy. Different materials have different emissivities. For accurate readings, adjust the emissivity setting to match the material being measured. The ERICKHILL ROOK600 SP has an adjustable emissivity range of 0.10 to 1.00.
- Press the "MODE" button until "EMS" appears on the display.
- Use the up/down arrow buttons to adjust the emissivity value.
- Press "MODE" again to confirm and exit, or wait for automatic exit.
Common Emissivity Values (for reference):
- Water: 0.93
- Wood: 0.94
- Concrete: 0.95
- Rubber: 0.95
- Paint (matte): 0.96
- Human Skin: 0.98
- Polished Aluminum: 0.05
- Oxidized Copper: 0.78

6.4 High/Low Temperature Alarm
The device can be set to alert you when measured temperatures exceed or fall below a specified threshold.
- Press the "MODE" button repeatedly until "LOW" or "HI" appears on the display.
- Use the up/down arrow buttons to set the desired low or high temperature limit.
- Once a limit is set, if a measured temperature goes below the "LOW" limit or above the "HI" limit, the corresponding icon (LOW/HI) will flash on the LCD screen, and an audible beep will sound.

6.5 MAX/MIN/AVG/DIF Modes
The "MODE" button cycles through various display options:
- MAX: Displays the maximum temperature recorded during a continuous scan.
- MIN: Displays the minimum temperature recorded during a continuous scan.
- AVG: Displays the average temperature recorded during a continuous scan.
- DIF: Displays the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded.
To use these modes, press the "MODE" button until the desired mode appears, then press and hold the trigger to scan. The corresponding value will update on the display.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning the Device
- Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the exterior of the thermometer.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- For the lens, use a soft cloth or cotton swab with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol.
- Ensure the device is completely dry before storage.
7.2 Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the AAA batteries as described in Section 5.1.
7.3 Storage
When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store the thermometer in its provided storage bag in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Batteries are dead or incorrectly installed. | Replace batteries or check polarity. |
| Inaccurate readings. | Incorrect emissivity setting; distance too far; lens is dirty. | Adjust emissivity; ensure proper distance (12:1 D:S ratio); clean the lens. |
| Laser not visible. | Laser is disabled or obstructed. | Check device settings for laser activation; ensure no obstruction. |
| Alarm not sounding. | Alarm limits not set or temperature not exceeding/falling below limits. | Verify alarm settings (HI/LOW) and ensure conditions are met. |

10. User Tips
- For best accuracy, ensure the target object fills the measurement spot indicated by the laser.
- When measuring shiny surfaces, consider applying a piece of masking tape or matte black paint to the surface and measuring that area for more accurate results, as shiny surfaces can reflect ambient temperatures.
- Always allow the thermometer to stabilize to the ambient temperature of the environment it's being used in, especially when moving between significantly different temperature zones.
- Remember to adjust the emissivity for different materials to get the most precise readings.
