DALY 8S-17S 150A Smart Active Balance BMS

DALY Smart Active Balance BMS User Manual

Model: 8S-17S 150A Smart Active Balance BMS

Brand: DALY

1. Introduction

The DALY Smart Active Balance BMS is designed to optimize the performance and lifespan of your battery pack. Battery cells often have slight variations in capacity, internal resistance, and voltage. Without proper management, these differences can lead to premature overcharging or over-discharging of individual cells, accelerating degradation and reducing the overall battery pack's capacity and cycle life.

This BMS features a third-generation active balancing function, capable of up to 1A balancing current. It intelligently redistributes energy from higher-energy cells to lower-energy cells, or uses the entire pack's energy to supplement the lowest cell. This process ensures maximum battery consistency, extends battery mileage, and prolongs battery life, going beyond simple data collection to provide true battery management.

4.2 Wiring Instructions

Important Precautions:

  • Always discharge static electricity before handling the BMS.
  • Use only the matching cables provided by DALY. Cables from other manufacturers may not be compatible.
  • Ensure the heat dissipation surface of the BMS does not directly contact the battery cells to prevent heat transfer and ensure battery safety.
  • Avoid contact between the heat sink and battery core/nickel strip during assembly.
  • When plugging or unplugging connector cables, always press the buckle to avoid damaging the wires.
  • The product defaults to the maximum number of strings. It will automatically recognize the actual number of strings upon first power-up. If recognition fails, you can set it via the APP or PC host software.

Sampling Cable Welding:

  1. Start with the thin black wire, connecting it to the battery's total negative terminal (B-).
  2. Connect the second wire (B1+) to the positive terminal of the first battery string.
  3. Continue connecting each subsequent wire sequentially to the positive terminal of each battery string.
  4. Finally, connect the B+ cable to the positive terminal of the last battery string (total positive pole).

5. Operation

5.1 Communication Interfaces

The DALY BMS supports multiple communication protocols for monitoring and control:

  • UART Communication: The default protocol for direct communication with Bluetooth modules, display screens, and PC host computers. Custom communication protocols can also be implemented.
  • RS485 Communication (Optional): Used with a dedicated communication box to connect to a PC host. Default baud rate is 9600bps. Allows viewing battery information (voltage, current, temperature, SOC, status) and setting parameters. Supports program upgrades.
  • CAN Communication (Optional): DALY's default CAN protocol operates at 250KB/S.

5.3 PC Host Software (DALY BMS Tool)

The DALY BMS Tool software for PC allows for comprehensive data monitoring, parameter configuration, and production management. After logging in and connecting, you can view real-time data (voltage, temperature, configuration values), read/write parameters, and perform BMS upgrades.

5.4 Buzzer and Keyswitch Logic

  • Buzzer Logic: Can be configured via the APP. Default logic triggers an alarm (1 second on, 1 second off) when charging/discharging temperature reaches 60°C, until temperature drops below 60°C. Custom logic can be requested.
  • Keyswitch Logic: Controls MOS and sleep functions. Default is disabled. Two optional logics are available: control discharge MOS, or control discharge MOS with hibernation. The control logic is positive (control occurs when the switch is closed). Custom logic can be requested.

6. Maintenance

  • Battery Type Setting: For battery packs with different voltage platforms, ensure the battery type is correctly set in the BMS. The factory default is typically for lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) parameters.
  • Cable Integrity: Regularly inspect all cables for signs of wear, damage, or loose connections. Ensure all connections are secure.
  • Thermal Management: The BMS is designed with multi-channel cooling and an aluminum alloy heat sink. Ensure adequate airflow around the BMS and avoid obstructing the fan (if present). Do not allow the heat dissipation surface of the BMS to directly contact battery cells.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the BMS free from dust and debris to ensure optimal cooling and prevent short circuits.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check for firmware updates via the PC host software or APP to ensure optimal performance and access to new features.

7. Troubleshooting

The DALY BMS incorporates various protection mechanisms. If an issue occurs, the BMS will trigger an alarm or protection state. If the BMS behaves abnormally, stop using it immediately and identify the cause before resuming operation.

7.1 Protection Functions

  • Overcharge Protection: Prevents cells from being charged beyond their safe voltage limit.
  • Over-discharge Protection: Prevents cells from being discharged below their safe voltage limit.
  • Overcurrent Protection: Protects against excessive charge or discharge currents. Recovery typically involves removing the charger or load.
  • Short Circuit Protection: Detects and protects against short circuits. Recovery involves removing the load or charging source.
  • Temperature Protection: Monitors and protects against high and low temperatures during charging and discharging.
  • MOS Temperature Protection: Monitors the temperature of the MOS transistors and triggers protection if they overheat.
  • Voltage Difference Alarm: Alerts if there is an excessive voltage difference between cells.
  • Temperature Difference Alarm: Alerts if there is an excessive temperature difference between cells.
  • Thermal Runaway Protection: Detects conditions indicative of thermal runaway (rapid voltage drop, sudden temperature rise) and takes action to shut down the MOS and activate the buzzer. Recovery requires rebooting the BMS.

7.2 General Troubleshooting Tips

  • No Power/No Indication: Check all power connections, especially B- and B+ cables. Ensure the battery pack voltage is within the BMS operating range.
  • Balancing Not Active: Verify that the balanced start voltage and balanced opening voltage difference parameters are met. These can be checked and adjusted via the APP or PC software.
  • Communication Issues: Ensure the correct communication protocol (UART, RS485, CAN) is selected and the baud rate is properly configured. Check cable connections for damage.
  • Inaccurate Readings: If voltage or current readings appear incorrect, ensure all sampling wires are correctly connected and not damaged.
  • BMS Abnormal Behavior: If the BMS exhibits unexpected behavior, stop use. Do not attempt to disassemble or modify BMS components. Contact support for assistance.

8. User Tips

  • Initial Setup: Always perform a thorough check of all wiring connections before applying power to the BMS for the first time. Double-check the polarity of all connections.
  • Parameter Customization: Take advantage of the APP and PC host software to customize protection parameters (e.g., voltage limits, current limits, temperature thresholds) to match your specific battery chemistry and application requirements.
  • Regular Monitoring: Periodically check battery cell voltages and temperatures via the APP to ensure optimal performance and detect any potential issues early.
  • Environmental Considerations: While the BMS is designed for robust performance, operating it within a friendly environment (avoiding extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or excessive humidity) can prolong its lifespan.
  • Redundancy: For critical applications, consider incorporating a certain level of redundancy in your BMS setup as a precautionary measure.
