3. Setup and Initial Operation

3.1 Initial Winding

Your PD-1792 watch is powered by an automatic mechanical movement. It does not require batteries but needs to be wound to start. If the watch has stopped, follow these steps:

  1. Unscrew the crown (if it's a screw-down crown) by turning it counter-clockwise.
  2. Pull the crown out to position 1 (first click).
  3. Turn the crown clockwise approximately 30-40 times. This will provide enough power reserve to start the watch.
  4. Push the crown back in and screw it down clockwise to ensure water resistance.

The watch will continue to run as long as it is worn regularly (approximately 8-10 hours a day) due to the motion of your wrist. If not worn, it will stop after its power reserve is depleted (typically 36-48 hours).

3.2 Setting Time and Date

  1. Setting the Date: Unscrew the crown and pull it out to position 1 (first click). Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust the date. Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as this is when the date change mechanism is engaged and could be damaged.
  2. Setting the Time: Pull the crown out to position 2 (second click). Turn the crown to set the hour and minute hands. Continue turning until the correct time is displayed, ensuring the AM/PM is correct for the date change.
  3. Setting the GMT Hand: The GMT hand (24-hour hand) can often be set independently or in conjunction with the main hour hand, depending on the specific movement. Refer to the movement's specific instructions if available. Generally, the GMT hand is set by rotating the main hour hand past 24 hours, or by a quick-set function at crown position 1.
  4. Once time and date are set, push the crown back in and screw it down clockwise firmly to maintain water resistance.

3.3 Adjusting the Bracelet

The stainless steel bracelet can be adjusted by adding or removing links. This procedure typically requires specialized tools and is best performed by a professional watchmaker to avoid scratching the watch or damaging the pins.

3.4 Water Resistance

Your watch is water resistant to 10 Bar (100 meters). This means it is suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and showering. However, it is crucial to ensure the crown is fully screwed down before any contact with water. Do not operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet or submerged, as this can compromise the water resistance.

4. Operating the GMT Function

The GMT function allows you to track a second time zone using the 24-hour hand and the bezel. The 24-hour markings on the bezel can be used to quickly reference a third time zone if desired.

  1. Set your local time using the main hour and minute hands.
  2. Set the GMT hand to your desired second time zone (e.g., home time if you are traveling).
  3. To track a third time zone, rotate the bezel so that the corresponding 24-hour marker aligns with the GMT hand.

5. Maintenance and Care

  • Cleaning: Wipe your watch regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. For stainless steel parts, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry one.
  • Water Resistance Care: After exposure to saltwater, rinse the watch with fresh water and dry thoroughly. Always ensure the crown is screwed down tightly.
  • Avoid Shocks: While the watch is shock-resistant, severe impacts can still damage the delicate mechanical movement. Avoid dropping the watch or subjecting it to strong vibrations.
  • Magnetic Fields: Keep your watch away from strong magnetic fields (e.g., speakers, refrigerators, certain electronic devices), as magnetism can affect the accuracy of mechanical movements. If your watch becomes magnetized, it may run fast or slow and will require demagnetization by a professional.
  • Temperature Extremes: Avoid exposing your watch to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, as this can affect lubrication and seals.
  • Servicing: Mechanical watches benefit from periodic servicing, typically every 3-5 years, to ensure the movement is clean, lubricated, and functioning optimally.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Watch Not Running: If the watch has stopped, manually wind it 30-40 times as described in Section 3.1. If it still doesn't start, ensure the crown is fully pushed in.
  • Inaccurate Timekeeping: Slight variations in timekeeping are normal for mechanical watches. If the watch is consistently running too fast or too slow (more than +/- 30 seconds per day), it may need adjustment or demagnetization by a professional.
  • Date Not Changing: Ensure the time is set correctly for AM/PM. If the date is stuck, try advancing the time past midnight to see if it changes. If not, manually adjust the date as per Section 3.2, avoiding the forbidden hours.
  • Condensation Inside Crystal: This indicates a breach in water resistance. Immediately take the watch to a professional watchmaker for inspection and repair to prevent further damage to the movement.

8. User Tips

  • For consistent accuracy, try to wear your automatic watch daily or use a watch winder if you rotate watches.
  • When traveling, remember to adjust the GMT hand first to your home time or a reference time zone before setting the local time.
  • Always double-check that the crown is fully screwed down after any adjustments, especially before washing hands or swimming.
  • If you notice any unusual sounds or resistance when winding or setting the watch, do not force it. Seek professional assistance.
