5. Setup

Proper setup is crucial for the performance and longevity of your LiFePO4 battery. Please follow these guidelines carefully.

5.1 Initial Inspection

Before installation, inspect each battery for any visible damage. Ensure the terminals are clean and free from debris.

5.2 Series and Parallel Connections

Your Dumfume LiFePO4 batteries can be connected in series or parallel to achieve higher voltage or capacity, respectively. The maximum configuration supported is 2S4P (2 batteries in series, 4 parallel strings).

  • Important Rule for Series/Parallel Connections: To connect batteries in series or parallel, all batteries must be identical (same brand, type, voltage, capacity, and BMS) and ideally purchased within the same month to ensure optimal balance and performance.
  • Series Connection: Connect the positive terminal of one battery to the negative terminal of the next to increase the total voltage. For example, connecting two 25.6V batteries in series will result in a 51.2V system.
  • Parallel Connection: Connect positive terminals together and negative terminals together to increase the total capacity while maintaining the same voltage. For example, connecting two 25.6V 100Ah batteries in parallel will result in a 25.6V 200Ah system.

5.3 Terminal Connections

Use the provided M8 terminal bolts to connect your battery to your system. Ensure connections are tight and secure to prevent resistance and overheating. Use the insulating caps to cover the terminals after connection to prevent accidental short circuits.

5.4 Initial Charge

It is recommended to fully charge the battery before its first use to ensure optimal performance and calibration of the BMS.

6.3 Charging and Discharging

  • Charging: Use a LiFePO4 compatible charger with a recommended charging voltage of 29.2V and a current between 20-50A. Ensure charging occurs within the temperature range of 32°F to 149°F (0°C to 65°C).
  • Discharging: The battery can discharge continuously up to 100A, providing 2560W of power. Ensure discharge occurs within the temperature range of -4°F to 158°F (-20°C to 70°C).

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and performance of your Dumfume LiFePO4 battery.

  • Regular Use: For optimal performance, charge and discharge the battery regularly.
  • Long-Term Storage: If storing the battery for an extended period, ensure it is charged to approximately 50% of its capacity. Store in a cool, dry place within the recommended storage temperature of -10°C to 45°C (14°F to 113°F).
  • Periodic Charging: Charge/discharge the battery once every 6 months to prevent damage from disuse and maintain cell balance.
  • Terminal Inspection: Periodically check battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections. Clean and tighten as necessary.
  • Cleaning: Keep the battery casing clean and free of dust and debris. Use a dry cloth for cleaning.

8. Troubleshooting

The integrated BMS provides protection against common issues. If the battery stops functioning, it may be due to a BMS protection trigger. Follow these general troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power Output:
    • Check all connections for tightness and proper polarity.
    • Verify that the load is not exceeding the maximum continuous discharge current (100A) or power (2560W).
    • The BMS may have triggered due to over-discharge. Attempt to charge the battery with a compatible LiFePO4 charger.
  • Battery Not Charging:
    • Ensure the charger is compatible with LiFePO4 batteries and set to the correct voltage (29.2V).
    • Check charging current is within the recommended range (20-50A).
    • Verify that the ambient temperature is within the charging temperature range (32°F to 149°F / 0°C to 65°C).
    • The BMS may have triggered due to overcharge or high temperature. Disconnect the charger and allow the battery to cool down.
  • Unusual Odor or Swelling:
    • Immediately disconnect the battery from all loads and chargers.
    • Move the battery to a safe, well-ventilated area away from flammable materials.
    • Do not attempt to use or repair the battery. Contact support immediately.
  • Short Circuit Protection:
    • If a short circuit occurs, the BMS will cut off power. Remove the short circuit and the battery should automatically reset or require a brief charge to reactivate.

If issues persist after following these steps, please contact Dumfume customer support for assistance.

9. User Tips

  • System Sizing: Always ensure your battery capacity and power output are appropriately sized for your application's energy demands to prevent frequent over-discharge or over-current events.
  • Cable Sizing: Use appropriately gauged cables for your connections to minimize voltage drop and prevent overheating, especially for high-current applications.
  • Monitoring: Consider using a battery monitor to keep track of voltage, current, and state of charge, which can help optimize battery life and prevent unexpected shutdowns.
