5. Setup
5.1 Motor Mounting
- Ensure your RC vehicle chassis has appropriate mounting holes for a 37mm diameter motor.
- Secure the motor using M3 screws (as indicated in specifications) to prevent movement during operation.
- Ensure there is adequate clearance around the motor for cooling and to prevent interference with other components.
5.2 ESC Connection
Connect the three motor wires to your Electronic Speed Controller (ESC). Since this is a sensorless motor, the order of connection typically does not matter for initial setup, but if the motor spins in the wrong direction, you can swap any two of the three wires to reverse rotation. The motor uses 4.0mm gold connectors.

5.3 Pinion Gear Installation and Gear Mesh
- Install the appropriate pinion gear onto the motor shaft (3.175mm or 5.0mm depending on motor series).
- Adjust the motor position to achieve proper gear mesh between the pinion gear and the spur gear. There should be a small amount of play (like a thin piece of paper) between the teeth. Too tight will cause excessive wear and heat; too loose will cause stripping.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Initial Run
- Before the first run, double-check all connections and ensure no wires are pinched or exposed.
- Perform a low-speed test to confirm correct motor rotation and smooth operation.
- Monitor motor and ESC temperatures during the first few runs, especially under load.
6.2 Battery Compatibility
Ensure your battery (2-7S for 3650, 2-6S for 3660, 2-10S for 3674) is compatible with your ESC and motor's voltage requirements. Using an incompatible battery can damage the motor or ESC.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Regularly clean the motor to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Use compressed air or a soft brush.
- Bearing Inspection: Periodically check the motor bearings for smooth rotation. If they feel rough or noisy, they may need replacement.
- Wiring Check: Inspect motor wires and connectors for any signs of wear, fraying, or corrosion. Replace damaged components immediately.
- Temperature Monitoring: Always monitor motor temperature during and after runs. Excessive heat (above 80°C / 176°F) can damage the motor. Adjust gearing or driving style if overheating occurs.
8. Troubleshooting
8.1 Motor Not Spinning / No Power
- Check battery charge level.
- Verify all connections between motor, ESC, and battery are secure.
- Ensure ESC is properly calibrated with your radio transmitter.
- Inspect motor wires for breaks or shorts.
8.2 Motor Overheating
- Check gear mesh; it might be too tight.
- Consider using a smaller pinion gear or larger spur gear (lower gearing) to reduce load on the motor.
- Ensure adequate airflow for cooling. Consider adding a motor fan if space allows.
- Verify battery voltage is within the motor's specified range.
8.3 Irregular or Cogging Operation
- Ensure ESC is configured for sensorless brushless motor operation.
- Check for loose connections or damaged motor wires.
- Verify battery is fully charged and capable of delivering sufficient current.
9. User Tips
- ESC Calibration: Always perform a full ESC calibration with your radio transmitter after initial setup or if you change your radio system. This ensures the ESC correctly interprets throttle inputs.
- Gearing Optimization: Experiment with different pinion/spur gear combinations to find the optimal balance between speed and torque for your specific vehicle and terrain. This also helps manage motor temperature.
- Battery Care: Use high-quality LiPo batteries and follow their charging and storage guidelines to maximize their lifespan and ensure consistent power delivery to your motor.
- Water Protection: While some RC components are water-resistant, it's generally best to avoid operating your vehicle in wet conditions unless all electronics are specifically rated and protected for such use.
