5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

The LEAP PQ9917 Chess Clock requires one (1) AA battery (not included).

  1. Turn the chess clock upside down.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover and slide it open.
  3. Insert one AA battery, ensuring the correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

5.2 Quick Start

  1. Ensure the battery is installed.
  2. Locate the ON/OFF switch on the bottom of the clock (refer to Figure 4) and slide it to the 'ON' position.
  3. The clock will display default time settings.
  4. To begin a game with default settings, set the rocker switch (Turn Lever) to the side of the player who starts. Press the middle button (||) briefly to start the timer.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Basic Play

  1. After setting up the clock, press the rocker switch (Turn Lever) on your side to start your opponent's timer.
  2. After making your move, press the rocker switch on your side again to stop your timer and start your opponent's timer.
  3. To pause the game, press the middle button (||) briefly. Press it again to resume.

6.2 Setting Game Time

The clock supports various timing modes including Bonus (Fischer), standard delay, and adjustment modes. Time, bonus/increment, and delay times can be set differently for each player.

  1. Pause the game by pressing the middle button (||).
  2. Press and hold the middle button (||) for 3 seconds. The first digit of the time will start flashing.
  3. Use the '+' and '-' buttons to adjust the flashing digit.
  4. Press the middle button (||) briefly to move to the next digit or setting parameter (e.g., minutes, seconds, bonus, delay).
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all desired settings are configured.
  6. Once finished, press and hold the middle button (||) again for 2 seconds to exit the setting mode and start the clock.

6.3 Move Count

To check the number of moves made by each player:

  1. Pause the game by pressing the middle button (||).
  2. Press and hold the '+' button for 3 seconds. The display will show the move counts for both players.
  3. Press any button to return to the time display.

6.4 Alarm Function

The chess clock features an audible alarm. You can turn it on or off as desired.

  1. During a game, press and hold the '-' button for 3 seconds.
  2. The alarm icon (bell symbol) will appear on the display if the alarm is ON, or disappear if it's OFF.

When the alarm is active and time is running out (specifically in the last 10 seconds of a player's turn), the clock may emit an alarm sound with each move made by that player.

6.5 Count Up Function

The clock can continuously count up after a player's countdown time has expired.

  • When one player's countdown time runs out, the "UP" and "Flag" signs will appear on their side of the display.
  • The other player's countdown time will only show "UP" if their time also runs out.
  • The clock will then continuously count up, indicating the elapsed time since the countdown ended.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

To clean your chess clock, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these may damage the surface or internal components.

7.2 Storage

When not in use for extended periods, store the chess clock in a dry, cool place. It is recommended to remove the AA battery to prevent potential leakage and damage to the device.
