5. Initial Setup

5.1. Battery Installation and Charging

  1. Install Battery: Align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio and slide it into place until it clicks securely.
  2. Charge Battery: Connect the power adapter to the desktop charger, then place the radio (with battery installed) into the charger. The LED indicator on the charger will show charging status. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.

5.2. Antenna Installation

Screw the antenna clockwise into the connector on the top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

6. Basic Operation

6.1. Power On/Off and Volume

Rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise to turn on the radio. Continue rotating to increase the volume. Rotate counter-clockwise to decrease volume and turn off the radio.

6.2. Channel/Frequency Selection

Use the Encoder/Channel Selection knob to scroll through programmed channels. Alternatively, use the keypad to directly enter frequencies in VFO mode.

6.3. Transmitting and Receiving

To transmit, press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) key. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT key to receive. Ensure you are on an appropriate channel/frequency.

6.4. Mode Selection (Digital/Analog)

The DM-F8 supports both digital (DMR) and analog modes. The radio can be configured to switch between these modes, allowing for flexible communication.

7.3. SMS Messaging

The DM-F8 allows for text-based communication:

  • Edit and Send SMS: Compose and send short text messages, supporting a maximum length of 128 characters.
  • Send Quick Text: Utilize up to 20 pre-programmed quick text messages for rapid communication.
  • Send Quick Text With A Key: Press a pre-programmed single bond call to a predefined alias or ID to send a prefabricated text message. The screen displays the user/group name or ID to confirm the receiver.
  • Manage Failed SMS: Review and resend messages that failed to send.
  • Manage Sent SMS: Sent messages are stored in the "sent items" folder, supporting up to 100 recently sent text messages. Older messages are replaced when storage is full.

7.4. VOX Function

VOX (Voice Operated eXchange) allows for hands-free transmission. When enabled, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice, eliminating the need to press the PTT button.
