Introduction

This Ezonetronics decoder box is a retrofit kit designed to add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality to your Audi A6 or Q7 vehicle equipped with the MMI 3G system (6.5"/7" screen, model years 2009-2015). It integrates seamlessly with your existing display and retains the use of original MMI controls, including the rotary controller and steering wheel buttons, providing an OEM-like experience.

Installation

Professional installation is recommended. Ensure the vehicle's power is disconnected before beginning installation.

1. Toggle Switch Setup (DIP Switches)

Locate the toggle (DIP) switches on the CarPlay decoder box. Set these switches according to your car's screen size to ensure proper display resolution.

2. Cable Connection Charts

Carefully follow the wiring diagrams for connecting the decoder box to your vehicle's MMI system. Ensure all connections are secure.

3. WiFi Antenna and USB-AV Cable Connection

Connect the WiFi antenna and USB-AV cable to the designated ports on the decoder box.

4. Decoder Box Placement

The CarPlay interface decoder box should be installed in an appropriate space near or on the OEM head unit, ensuring it is secure and does not interfere with other components.

Operation

1. Switching Between MMI 3G and CarPlay/Android Auto

After all cables are connected, you can switch between the original MMI 3G interface and the CarPlay/Android Auto interface by long-pressing the "RETURN" button on your MMI control panel.

2. Wireless CarPlay Connection Method

  1. On the decoder box interface, select "Bluetooth" in the SmartPhone Setting menu.
  2. Check the Bluetooth device name, which should start with "CAR-xxxx".
  3. On your iPhone, turn on Wi-Fi and keep it on. Then, go back to Bluetooth settings to connect to the CarPlay device.
  4. Select the Bluetooth device name "CAR-XXX" on your iPhone. A pairing request window will pop up. Confirm the pairing and select "Use CarPlay".

3. Apple Wireless Screen Mirroring

  1. On the decoder box interface, select "AirPlay" in the SmartPhone Setting menu.
  2. On your iPhone, turn on the "Wireless LAN" option. Search for "CAR-WIFI-XXX" and click to connect. The password is 66668888.
  3. After successful Wi-Fi connection, return to your iPhone's main interface. Open the shortcut menu page and select "Screen Mirroring".
  4. Once "Screen Mirroring" is turned on, select "AirPlay" to complete the wireless screen mirroring.

4. Wireless Android Auto Connection Method

  1. On the decoder box interface, select "Bluetooth" in the SmartPhone Setting menu.
  2. Check the Bluetooth name starting with "CAR-xxx" in the Bluetooth interface.
  3. On your Android phone, click on the Bluetooth name beginning with "CAR-xxx". A pairing request will pop up; click "Pairing".
  4. After successful Bluetooth pairing, follow the Android Auto connection process on your phone screen. The system will connect automatically.

5. Android Wireless Screen Mirroring (AutoLink)

  1. Scan the QR code displayed on the decoder box interface (or refer to the manual) with your Android phone's browser to download and install the AutoLink app.
  2. On the decoder box interface, switch the "WIFI Auto Link" to "ON" in the Settings page.
  3. Open the AutoLink software on your phone, search for "CAR-WIFI-XXXX" and connect. Then, click "START NOW" on the phone prompt box.
  4. The media sound for AutoLink requires a Bluetooth connection.

6. Audio Settings (Call Echo Cancellation)

If you experience echo during phone calls, perform the Call Echo Cancellation procedure:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Audio > AEC Delay.
  2. Click the button "Start Auto AEC".
  3. Ensure the car is quiet.
  4. Set the volume to a moderate position.
  5. Click "Start Auto AEC" again.
  6. Wait 20 seconds for the estimation to complete.

Maintenance

  • Keep the decoder box and connections free from dust and moisture.
  • Avoid exposing the unit to extreme temperatures.
  • Do not attempt to open or modify the decoder box, as this will void the warranty.
  • Periodically check cable connections to ensure they remain secure.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound from Phone Music (CarPlay/Android Auto): Ensure your phone's media volume is up and that the correct audio source is selected on your car's MMI system. Check the audio settings within the decoder box interface (refer to Audio Settings section).
  • CarPlay/Android Auto Not Starting/Connecting: Verify all cable connections are secure. Check the DIP switch settings match your screen size. If the issue occurs after a car battery change, try re-pairing your phone with the decoder box via Bluetooth.
  • Screen Mirroring Issues: Ensure both your phone and the decoder box are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (CAR-WIFI-XXX). Double-check the Wi-Fi password (66668888).
  • Echo during Phone Calls: Perform the Call Echo Cancellation procedure as described in the Operation section.
  • General Malfunction: If the unit is not functioning as expected, ensure all connections are correct and the DIP switches are set appropriately.

User Tips

  • Audio Playback: If you experience no sound during music playback from your phone, ensure your phone's volume is up and check the audio output settings within the CarPlay/Android Auto interface and your car's MMI system. Sometimes, a separate Bluetooth connection for media audio might be required or preferred.
  • Post-Battery Change Issues: If CarPlay or Android Auto stops working after your car's battery has been disconnected or replaced, try re-pairing your phone with the decoder box via Bluetooth and re-establishing the Wi-Fi connection. This often resolves connectivity glitches.
  • Initial Setup: Before contacting support for non-startup issues, double-check all physical cable connections and ensure the DIP switches are correctly configured for your specific screen size.
