- Signal Strength Indicator: LED bar graph indicating signal strength.
6.2. Modes of Operation
6.2.1. Digital Wire Finding
This mode offers strong anti-interference ability and higher accuracy, ideal for complex environments.
- Connect the transmitter to the cable you wish to trace using the alligator clips.
- Power on both the transmitter and receiver units.
- Press the 'Digital Tone' button on both the transmitter and receiver to activate digital mode.
- Use the receiver's signal hose to scan along the suspected path of the cable. The LED signal strength indicator on the receiver will illuminate, and an audible tone will increase in frequency or volume as you get closer to the cable.

Figure 3: Digital Wire Finding in action
6.2.2. Analog Line Search
This mode provides a wide range of received signals and strong sensitivity, suitable for general wire hunting.
- Connect the transmitter to the cable you wish to trace.
- Power on both units.
- Press the 'Analog Tone' button on both the transmitter and receiver.
- Adjust the sensitivity knob on the receiver for optimal detection. Clockwise rotation strengthens the signal, counter-clockwise weakens it.
- Scan with the receiver's signal hose. The audible tone and LED indicators will guide you.
6.2.3. Continuity Detection
Use this function to check if a cable is intact or has a break (on-off detection).
- Connect the red and black alligator clips from the transmitter to the two ends of the cable you want to test.
- Power on the transmitter.
- Press the 'CONT' button on the transmitter.
- The transmitter's display will indicate whether the circuit is continuous or disconnected.

Figure 4: Continuity Detection
6.2.4. Underground/Wall Line Detection
This detector can detect the continuity, presence, and route of cables or wires buried underground or within walls, with a detection depth of up to 2 meters.
- Connect the transmitter to one end of the cable you want to trace.
- Connect the grounding pestle to the black test lead of the transmitter and insert it firmly into the ground near the cable's starting point.
- Power on both units and select either Digital or Analog Tone mode.
- Use the receiver to scan the area where the cable is suspected to be buried or hidden. The signal strength will increase as you approach the cable.

6.2.5. Cable Finding (1000M+)
The device is capable of locating various types of cables, including metal wires, network cables, and telephone cables, over distances exceeding 1000 meters.
- Follow the steps for Digital or Analog Wire Finding (Sections 6.2.1 or 6.2.2).
- Ensure the transmitter is connected to the cable and transmitting a signal.
- Walk along the suspected path of the cable with the receiver, observing the signal strength indicators to pinpoint its location.

- Press the ON/OFF/Torch button on the receiver to activate the flashlight.
- Press it again to turn the flashlight off.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Keep the device clean and dry. Use a soft, damp cloth for cleaning. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the casing or display.
- Storage: Store the FY8178 in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use the provided carrying case for protection during storage and transport.
- Battery Care: To maintain battery health, ensure the batteries are charged regularly, especially if storing the device for extended periods. Avoid fully discharging the batteries for prolonged times.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your FY8178, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Signal / Weak Signal | Low battery; Improper connection; Incorrect mode; Excessive shielding. | Check battery levels and recharge. Ensure test leads are securely connected. Verify both units are in the same mode (Digital/Analog). Adjust receiver sensitivity. |
| Inaccurate Readings | Electromagnetic interference; Poor grounding. | Move away from strong electromagnetic sources. Ensure proper grounding for underground detection. Re-calibrate by restarting the units. |
| Unit Not Powering On | Depleted battery; Faulty power button. | Connect to charger and allow sufficient charging time. Ensure the power button is pressed firmly. If still unresponsive, contact support. |
| Continuity Test Fails | Broken cable; Loose connection. | Verify test leads are firmly connected to both ends of the cable. If the cable is confirmed broken, use breakpoint detection to locate the fault. |

10. User Tips
- For best results in noisy environments or when precision is critical, utilize the Digital Tone mode for its strong anti-interference capabilities.
- When tracing long lines or in areas with varying signal strength, start with a lower sensitivity setting on the receiver and gradually increase it as needed to pinpoint the signal accurately.
- Always ensure a good ground connection when performing underground detection. A poor ground can significantly reduce detection range and accuracy.
- Regularly check the battery indicator on both units to avoid unexpected power loss during critical tasks.
- The flexible signal hose on the receiver allows for precise targeting in tight spaces or when trying to differentiate between closely spaced cables.
