2. Setup Guide

2.1. Package Contents

Before you begin, please verify that all items are present in your package:

  • 1 x Power Adapter (DC 120W 19V6.32A)
  • 1 x HDMI Cable
  • 1 x VESA Mount
  • 1 x User Manual (this document)

2.2. Hardware Installation (RAM & SSD)

The AOOSTAR GEM12 Max is a barebone system, meaning RAM and SSD are not included and must be installed by the user.

  1. Open the Chassis: Carefully open the mini PC chassis to access the internal components. Refer to the manufacturer's guide for specific instructions on opening the case.
  2. Install RAM: Locate the DDR5 SO-DIMM slots. Insert your DDR5 5600MHz SO-DIMM modules firmly until they click into place. The system supports dual-channel memory, with a single channel supporting up to 64GB.

  4. Install SSD: Identify the two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots. Insert your M.2 NVMe SSDs into the slots and secure them with the provided screws.

  6. Close the Chassis: Once RAM and SSD are installed, carefully close and secure the chassis.

2.3. Connecting Peripherals

Connect your display, keyboard, mouse, and other devices to the mini PC using the available ports.

  • Power: Connect the DC 120W 19V6.32A power adapter to the DC-in port on the back of the mini PC.
  • Display: Connect your monitor(s) to the HDMI 2.1, DP 1.4, or USB4 ports. The system supports up to four 4K@120Hz displays simultaneously.
  • USB Devices: Connect your keyboard, mouse, and other USB peripherals to the USB3.2 Gen2, USB2.0, or USB4 ports.
  • Network: For wired network access, connect an Ethernet cable to one of the two 2.5G RJ45 LAN ports. For wireless, ensure your WiFi 6 antenna is connected (if external) or rely on the internal WiFi 6 module.
  • Audio: Connect headphones or speakers to the 3.5mm headphone jack on the front.
  • Oculink Port: The Oculink port is for external GPU enclosures or other high-speed peripherals. IMPORTANT: Be sure to turn off the computer when plugging in or unplugging devices from the Oculink interface. Otherwise, the motherboard may be damaged, and such damage will not be covered by the warranty.

2.4. VESA Mount Installation

Use the included VESA mount to attach the mini PC to the back of a compatible monitor or to a wall mount, saving desk space.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1. Power On/Off

  • Power On: Press the power button located on the front of the mini PC.
  • Power Off: Perform a proper shutdown through your operating system. Alternatively, press and hold the power button for a few seconds to force a shutdown (not recommended for regular use).

3.2. Operating System Installation

As a barebone system, the AOOSTAR GEM12 Max requires an operating system (e.g., Windows, Linux) to be installed by the user. Prepare a bootable USB drive with your preferred OS installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

3.3. BIOS/UEFI Settings

To access the BIOS/UEFI settings, power on the mini PC and repeatedly press the designated key (commonly DEL or F2) during the initial boot sequence. This allows you to configure boot order, system settings, and other advanced options.

3.4. Multi-Display Setup

The mini PC supports up to four displays simultaneously at 4K@120Hz resolution. Connect your monitors to the HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB4 ports. Configure display settings within your operating system to extend or duplicate your desktop.

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning

  • Regularly dust the exterior of the mini PC with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Ensure ventilation openings are clear of obstructions to prevent overheating. Use compressed air to gently clear dust from vents if necessary.
  • Do not use liquid cleaners directly on the device.

4.2. Software Updates

  • Keep your operating system, drivers (especially for graphics and chipset), and BIOS/UEFI firmware updated to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Check the AOOSTAR support website for the latest drivers and firmware for your GEM12 Max.

4.3. Hardware Upgrades

  • Memory: The mini PC supports dual DDR5 SO-DIMM modules, allowing for memory upgrades up to 64GB per channel.
  • Storage: You can expand storage by adding or replacing M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSDs in the two available slots.

5. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the mini PC and a working power outlet. Verify the power adapter's indicator light (if any) is on.
  • No Display: Check all display cable connections (HDMI, DP, USB4). Ensure your monitor is set to the correct input source. Try connecting to a different display or using a different cable.
  • Network Issues: For wired connections, check the Ethernet cable and router. For wireless, ensure WiFi is enabled in the OS and the correct network is selected with the correct password.
  • System Instability/Crashes: This could be due to incompatible RAM/SSD, outdated drivers, or overheating. Ensure RAM and SSD are correctly seated. Update drivers and monitor system temperatures.
  • Oculink Port Damage: Remember the critical warning: Always power off the mini PC before connecting or disconnecting any device from the Oculink port to prevent motherboard damage. Damage due to incorrect use is not covered by warranty.
