3.2 OBD2/EOBD Compatibility

The KW890 is compatible with standard OBD2/EOBD compliant vehicles.

  • American (USA) cars: Compatible with Standard OBD2 Cars from 1996 to present (e.g., Chrysler, Ford, GM, Jeep).
  • European cars: Compatible with Standard OBD2 Cars from 2003 to present (e.g., Alfa Romeo, SAAB, Acura, Opel, Audi, Seat, Bentley, Skoda, Daewoo, Benz, Daihatsu, Land Rover, BMW, Vauxhall, Volvo, VW, Ford, Jaguar).
  • French cars: Compatible with Standard OBD2 Cars from 2003 to present (e.g., Citroen, Fiat, Renault, Peugeot). Note: Not supported for Renault Clio 2/Megane/Dacia Logan.
  • Asian cars: Compatible with Standard OBD2 Cars from 2008 to present (e.g., KIA, Isuzu, Honda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Dacia, Lexus, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota).
  • Chinese cars: Compatible with Standard OBD2 Cars from 2009 to present (e.g., BYD, Chery, Geely, Great Wall, Karry).

Important Note on Compatibility:

  • Not supported for Russian Cars (VAZ, UAZ, LADA).
  • Not compatible with trucks for Ssangyong Actyon (2009-2017) or Ssangyong Korando 2.0 TD Diesel (2013-2017).
  • Not supported for Ssangyong cars in general.
  • Not supported for Opel Corsa c 2004 1.3 CDTI or VW Golf 4 2002.
  • Not supported for Citroen C4/C5.
  • Not supported for Chevrolet cars.
  • Not supported for Renault Logon/Megane.
  • Not supported for Skoda Fabia, Skoda Octavia.
  • This device primarily offers OBD2 functions and does not include special functions like ABS Reset or Airbag Reset.

4. Setup and Initial Use

4.1 Connecting for OBD2 Diagnostics

  1. Locate your vehicle's 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC), usually found under the dashboard on the driver's side.
  2. Ensure the vehicle's ignition is OFF.
  3. Connect the KW890's 16 PIN OBD2 Cable to the vehicle's DLC port.
  4. Turn the vehicle's ignition to the ON position (engine can be off or running, depending on the test).
  5. The KW890 will power on automatically.

4.2 Connecting for Battery Testing

  1. Ensure the vehicle's ignition is OFF and all accessories are turned off.
  2. Connect the red battery clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the battery.
  3. Connect the black battery clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
  4. The KW890 will power on automatically.

5. Operating Instructions

Navigate through the menu using the UP/DOWN arrow buttons and confirm selections with the OK button. Use the ESC button to go back to the previous screen.

5.1 OBD2 Diagnostic Functions

From the main menu, select 'Diagnose' to access the OBD2 functions.

  • Reading Codes: Displays detailed descriptions of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that have triggered the Check Engine Light.
  • Erasing Codes & Reset: Clears DTCs, turns off the Check Engine Light (MIL), and resets monitors.
  • Data Stream: Reads and displays live ECU/PCM data, allowing graphical plotting and storage of freeze frame data. This helps in identifying faulty sensor readings.
  • I/M Readiness Status: Indicates whether the vehicle's emissions-related systems are operating correctly and are ready for inspection/maintenance testing (smog check).
  • View Freeze Frame Data: Shows vehicle conditions recorded by the on-board computer at the moment an emission-related fault occurred.
  • Read Vehicle Information: Displays information such as VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), CID (Calibration ID), and CVN (Calibration Verification Number).
  • Turn off engine warning light: Clears the Check Engine Light after repairs are made.
  • Smoke emission Check: Assists in checking for smoke emissions.
  • Engine EPC Check: Performs an Electronic Power Control check.

5.2 Battery Test Functions

From the main menu, select 'Car BAT' to perform battery tests.

The KW890 uses state-of-the-art conductance testing technology to quickly and accurately measure the actual cold cranking amps (CCA) capability of the starting battery, its overall health, and common faults within the vehicle's starting and charging systems.

  • Battery Voltage Waveform Analysis: Provides a graphical representation of the battery's voltage over time, helping to identify fluctuations and potential issues.
  • Battery Health Status: Displays results such as 'Good Battery', 'Good, Recharge & Charge, Retest', or 'Replace & Bad cell, Replace'.
  • Support for Multiple Battery Types: Compatible with various 12V lead-acid battery types as listed in Section 3.3.

5.3 Oil Reset Service

From the main menu, select 'Oil Reset' to perform the oil service light reset function.

This function allows you to reset the Engine Oil Life system, which calculates an optimal oil life change interval based on vehicle driving conditions and climate. This is crucial after an oil change to ensure accurate maintenance reminders.

Note: The oil reset function is a specialized feature and may not be compatible with all car models or years. Please refer to the compatibility list in Section 3.2.

6.1 Software Update Procedure

  1. Step 1: Press and hold any button on the scanner BEFORE connecting it to your PC.

  3. Step 3: Download the update software (Uplink tool) and unzip it to your computer desktop.
  4. Step 4: Open the "Uplink" application to proceed with the upgrade and printing functions.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 General Issues

  • Device not powering on: Ensure the OBD2 cable is securely connected to the vehicle's DLC or the battery clamps are correctly attached to the battery terminals. Check vehicle ignition status for OBD2 connection.
  • Communication error: Verify the vehicle is OBD2 compliant and the connection is secure. Some older or non-standard vehicles may not be fully compatible.
  • Screen frozen/unresponsive: Disconnect the device from the vehicle/battery, wait a few seconds, and reconnect. If the issue persists, perform a software update.

As noted in the specifications, certain vehicle models and brands may not be fully supported for all functions. If you encounter compatibility issues, especially with the Oil Reset function or specific diagnostic features, please:

  • Verify your vehicle's make, model, year, engine size, and fuel type against the supported lists.
  • Ensure your device software is up to date.

  • Always turn off the ignition before connecting or disconnecting the OBD2 cable or battery clamps to prevent potential damage to the vehicle's ECU or the scanner.

  • For battery testing, ensure battery terminals are clean for accurate readings. Corroded terminals can lead to inaccurate results.
