1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your BISON Gasoline Engine Generator, Model 3500. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the generator to ensure proper use and to prevent injury or damage.
Your BISON generator is a portable power solution designed to provide electric power for various applications. It features a robust 4-stroke OHV gasoline engine and is available with multiple voltage and frequency options.
2. Safety Instructions
WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in serious injury or death.
- Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Generators produce carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. Operate generators outdoors only, far away from windows, doors, and vents.
- Fire Hazard: Gasoline is highly flammable. Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool. Do not smoke near the generator.
- Electrical Shock Hazard: Do not operate the generator in wet conditions. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly grounded.
- Hot Surfaces: The generator engine and muffler become very hot during operation and remain hot for a while after shutdown. Avoid touching hot surfaces.
- Keep Children Away: Keep children and pets away from the generator, especially during operation.
- Read All Labels: Pay attention to all warning and instruction labels on the generator itself.
- Proper Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the generator during operation to prevent overheating.

4. Setup and Pre-Operation Checks
4.1 Unpacking and Assembly
Carefully remove the generator from its packaging. If your model includes optional wheels and handles, follow the assembly instructions provided with those components. Ensure all packing materials are removed.
4.2 Adding Engine Oil
IMPORTANT: The engine is shipped without oil. Operating without oil will cause severe engine damage and void the warranty.
- Place the generator on a level surface.
- Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick.
- Add the recommended engine oil (refer to Specifications for type and capacity) until it reaches the upper mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
- Securely replace the oil fill cap/dipstick.
4.3 Adding Fuel
WARNING: Use fresh, unleaded gasoline. Do not use E85 or mix oil with gasoline.
- Ensure the engine is off and cool.
- Move the generator to a well-ventilated outdoor area.
- Remove the fuel cap.
- Carefully pour gasoline into the fuel tank, avoiding spills. Do not fill above the red indicator or the bottom of the filler neck.
- Securely replace the fuel cap. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately.
4.4 Grounding the Generator
For safety, always ground the generator before operation. Connect a heavy-gauge wire from the generator's grounding terminal to an external grounding rod or suitable earth ground.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Starting the Engine (Recoil Start)
- Ensure the generator is on a level surface and all electrical loads are disconnected.
- Turn the fuel valve to the "ON" position.
- Move the choke lever to the "CHOKE" position (cold engine). For a warm engine, set to "RUN".
- Turn the engine switch to the "ON" position.
- Grasp the recoil starter handle firmly and pull slowly until resistance is felt, then pull quickly and smoothly.
- Once the engine starts, slowly move the choke lever to the "RUN" position.
- Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before connecting electrical loads.
5.2 Starting the Engine (Electric Start - if equipped)
- Ensure the generator is on a level surface and all electrical loads are disconnected.
- Turn the fuel valve to the "ON" position.
- Move the choke lever to the "CHOKE" position (cold engine). For a warm engine, set to "RUN".
- Turn the engine switch to the "START" position and hold for a few seconds until the engine starts. Do not crank for more than 5 seconds at a time.
- Once the engine starts, release the switch to the "ON" position and slowly move the choke lever to the "RUN" position.
- Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before connecting electrical loads.
5.3 Connecting Electrical Loads
- Ensure the generator is running smoothly.
- Plug in your appliances or extension cords into the appropriate AC outlets.
- Do not overload the generator. Monitor the voltmeter and ensure the total wattage of connected devices does not exceed the generator's rated output.
5.4 Stopping the Engine
- Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.
- Allow the engine to run for a few minutes without load to cool down.
- Turn the engine switch to the "OFF" position.
- Turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position.
6. Maintenance
WARNING: Always turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.
