5. Setup and Installation
5.1 Physical Installation
- Power Off: Before starting, ensure the main power supply to the circuit is turned off at the circuit breaker.
- Identify Wires: In your wall switch box, identify the Live (L), Neutral (N), and Load (L1, L2) wires. The module requires both Live and Neutral connections.
- Connect Wires: Refer to the wiring diagrams below for your specific setup (1-gang or 2-gang). Connect the wires to the module's terminals as indicated:
- L: Live input
- N: Neutral input
- L1: Load output for Gang 1
- L2: Load output for Gang 2
- S1: Switch input for Gang 1 (connect to your physical switch)
- S2: Switch input for Gang 2 (connect to your physical switch)
- Mount the Module: The mini design allows the module to fit into most EU/UK wall switch boxes. It can also be fixed in a mounting clip or on a DIN rail.
- Restore Power: Once all connections are secure and the module is safely housed, restore power at the circuit breaker.
This image shows the module's terminals (S2, L', S1, L, N) and their corresponding connections for a 2-gang setup. It also highlights the voltage (AC 90V-250V), total current (10A), and Wi-Fi frequency (2.4 GHz).
This diagram provides specific wiring instructions for both a single 1-gang switch setup (requiring one module) and a 2-gang 2-way switch setup (also requiring one module). It illustrates connections for rocker light switches and the module's L, N, S1, S2, L1, L2 terminals.
This image demonstrates that the smart module can work independently with traditional switches without interference, allowing the physical switch to control the power state.
The module can be securely fixed using a mounting clip or installed on a DIN rail, offering flexible installation choices.
5.2 App Pairing (Smart Life/Tuya App)
- Download App: Download the "Smart Life" or "Tuya Smart" app from your smartphone's app store (iOS or Android).
- Register/Login: Open the app and register for an account or log in if you already have one.
- Enable Bluetooth & Wi-Fi: Ensure your phone's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled. The module only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks.
- Enter Pairing Mode: After restoring power to the module, it should automatically enter pairing mode (indicator light blinking rapidly). If not, press and hold the reset button on the module for 5-10 seconds until the indicator light blinks rapidly.
Figure 6: Reset Button Location This image highlights the small reset button on the module, used for initiating pairing mode or factory reset.
- Add Device: Open the Smart Life/Tuya app. The app should automatically discover the new device via Wi-Fi+Bluetooth. Tap "Add device" or the "+" icon in the top right corner, then select "Auto Scan" or manually add a "Switch (Wi-Fi)".
- Confirm Pairing: Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the indicator light status and enter your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network password. The device should connect within seconds.
Figure 7: Simplified Pairing Process This image illustrates the updated pairing mode, which uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for faster and easier device discovery and connection compared to older, more complex methods.
- Rename Device: Once connected, you can rename the switch(es) for easier identification (e.g., "Living Room Light 1", "Living Room Light 2").
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 App Control
- On/Off Control: Tap the switch icon in the Smart Life/Tuya app to turn the connected light(s) on or off from anywhere.
- Scheduling: Set schedules or timers for automatic on/off operations.
- Scene Creation: Create custom scenes to control multiple smart devices simultaneously.
- Multi-Control Association (2-Way Control): This feature allows two smart switches to control one light without complex wiring. In the app, navigate to the device settings and select "Multi-Control Association" to link this module with another compatible smart switch.
Figure 8: Multi-Control Association Setup This image demonstrates how to set up multi-control association within the Smart Life/Tuya app, enabling two switches to control a single light without needing to wire the second switch directly to the light (only L and N connections are required for the second switch).
- Group Control: Group multiple modules together in the app to control them simultaneously with a single command.
Figure 9: Group Control Interface This image shows the app interface for creating and managing groups of smart devices, allowing multiple modules to be controlled together.
- Power-Off Memory: In the app settings for the module, you can configure the relay status after a power outage. Options typically include OFF, ON, or Remember Last Status.
Figure 10: Power-Off Memory Setting This image illustrates the app interface where users can select the desired power-off memory state for the module: OFF, ON, or to remember the last state before power loss.
6.2 Voice Control (Alexa/Google Home)
- Link Account: In your Alexa or Google Home app, enable the "Smart Life" or "Tuya Smart" skill/service and link your account.
- Discover Devices: Ask Alexa/Google to discover new devices or manually initiate device discovery in their respective apps.
- Voice Commands: Use commands like:
- "Alexa, turn on [Device Name]"
- "Hey Google, turn off [Device Name]"
- "Alexa, set [Device Name] to 50%" (if dimming is supported by the connected light and module configuration)
6.3 RF433 Remote Control
If you have a compatible RF433 remote controller (not included), you can pair it with the module for local wireless control. Refer to the remote controller's instructions for pairing procedures. The module supports RF433 control for convenient operation without Wi-Fi or app access.
This image illustrates the use of an RF433 remote control to operate the smart switch module, providing an alternative control method.
6.4 Manual Control
The module is compatible with both rocker light switches and reset switches. Your existing physical switch will continue to function normally, allowing you to control the lights manually even if Wi-Fi is unavailable.
This image confirms the module's compatibility with both standard rocker light switches and momentary reset switches.
7. Maintenance
- Keep the device clean and dry.
- Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the module yourself. Contact support if issues arise.
- Regularly check for firmware updates in the Smart Life/Tuya app to ensure optimal performance and security.
8. Troubleshooting
- Device not pairing:
- Ensure your Wi-Fi network is 2.4 GHz. 5 GHz networks are not supported.
- Check if the module's indicator light is blinking rapidly. If not, press and hold the reset button for 5-10 seconds.
- Make sure your phone's Bluetooth is enabled during pairing.
- Ensure your Wi-Fi signal is strong where the module is installed.
- Try restarting your Wi-Fi router.
- No response from app/voice control:
- Verify the module is connected to Wi-Fi and online in the app.
- Check your internet connection.
- Ensure your Smart Life/Tuya account is correctly linked to Alexa/Google Home.
- Confirm the device name used in voice commands matches the name in the app.
- Physical switch not working:
- Check all wiring connections to the S1/S2 terminals and the physical switch.
- Ensure power is supplied to the module.
9. User Tips
- Optimal Wi-Fi Placement: For best performance, ensure your Wi-Fi router is centrally located or use Wi-Fi extenders to provide a strong 2.4 GHz signal to all smart devices.
- Clear Naming: Use simple and distinct names for your switches in the app (e.g., "Kitchen Main Light", "Bedroom Fan Light") to avoid confusion, especially when using voice control.
- Test Before Closing: Before fully closing up the wall box, test the module's functionality with both the physical switch and the app to ensure all connections are correct and the device is paired.
- Consider RF Remote: An RF433 remote can be very useful for guests or family members who prefer not to use a smartphone app or voice commands.
