6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Power On/Off

To power on the instrument, rotate the central dial from the "关机" (Off) position to the desired measurement range (e.g., 2Ω, 20Ω, 200Ω, 2000Ω, or voltage ranges). To power off, rotate the dial back to "关机". The instrument also features an automatic shutdown function after 5 minutes of inactivity.

6.2. Selecting Measurement Range

Use the large rotary dial in the center of the instrument to select the appropriate measurement range for ground resistance (2Ω, 20Ω, 200Ω, 2000Ω) or voltage (AC600V, DC1500V). For soil resistivity (DY4100B only), select the corresponding range.

6.3. Performing a Test

  1. Ensure the test leads and ground rods are connected correctly for the desired measurement method (refer to Section 7).
  2. Select the appropriate range using the rotary dial.
  3. Press the "测试" (Test) button to initiate the measurement.
  4. The measurement result will be displayed on the LCD screen.

6.4. Backlight Function

Press the "确认/背光" (Confirm/Backlight) button to turn the display backlight on or off, improving readability in low-light conditions.

6.5. Data Hold Function

The instrument supports a data hold function. While a measurement is displayed, pressing a specific button (usually indicated by a hold symbol or part of the "功能" button group) will freeze the reading on the screen. Press again to release.

6.6. Interference Voltage Warning

The DY4100 series automatically detects and warns of series interference voltage during ground resistance and soil resistivity tests. If an abnormal test result or interference is detected, a warning will be displayed, indicating potential inaccuracies due to external electrical noise.

7. Measurement Methods

The DY4100 series supports various wiring configurations for ground resistance and soil resistivity measurements. Always ensure auxiliary ground electrodes are placed at appropriate distances and the soil is adequately moist for accurate readings.

7.1. Simple 2-Wire Wiring Scheme

This method is suitable for quick checks where a known good ground (e.g., water pipe) is available. Connect the E/COM terminal to the measured grounding body and the V terminal to the known good ground.

Simple 2-wire wiring scheme diagram
Figure 11: Diagram for Simple 2-wire ground resistance test wiring.

7.2. Precision 3-Wire Wiring Diagram

The 3-wire method is commonly used for general ground resistance measurements. It involves the measured grounding body and two auxiliary ground electrodes (P and C). The auxiliary ground electrodes should be placed in a straight line from the measured grounding body, typically 5-10 meters apart.

Precision 3-wire wiring diagram
Figure 12: Diagram for Precision 3-wire ground resistance test wiring.

7.3. Precision 4-Wire Wiring Diagram (DY4100B Only)

This method is used for highly accurate ground resistance measurements, especially when the resistance of the test leads themselves might affect the reading. It uses separate potential (P, S) and current (C, ES) electrodes. This method is limited to the DY4100B model.

Precision 4-wire wiring diagram
Figure 13: Diagram for Precision 4-wire ground resistance test wiring (DY4100B only).

7.4. Soil Resistivity 4-Pole Method (DY4100B Only)

The 4-pole method for soil resistivity measurement (Wenner method) requires four auxiliary ground electrodes (H/V, S, ES, E). The electrodes should be placed in a straight line at equal intervals (e.g., 1-30 meters). This method is exclusive to the DY4100B model.

Soil resistivity 4-pole method measurement diagram
Figure 14: Diagram for Soil Resistivity 4-pole method measurement (DY4100B only).

Important Note: If the auxiliary ground electrode resistance is too large, the display value may have errors. This can occur if the electrodes are not tested in a dry place or with lots of small stones and sand. Sprinkle water from the auxiliary part of the ground rod to keep it fully moist. When testing on concrete, flatten the auxiliary grounding rod with water or place it on the auxiliary grounding rod with a damp cloth for testing.

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the instrument's casing. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the instrument in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace all 6 AA5 batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Ensure correct polarity.
  • Calibration: For continued accuracy, periodic calibration by qualified personnel is recommended.

9. Troubleshooting

Display shows "ol"
This indicates that the input value exceeds the selected measurement range. Rotate the dial to a higher range or check the circuit for excessively high resistance/voltage.
Inaccurate Readings
  • Check battery level; replace if low.
  • Ensure test leads are securely connected and not damaged.
  • Verify auxiliary ground electrode placement and soil conditions (moisture, presence of stones).
  • Check for strong electromagnetic interference in the testing environment.
  • Ensure the correct measurement method (2-wire, 3-wire, 4-wire) is being used for the application.
Instrument does not power on
  • Check if batteries are installed correctly and have sufficient charge.
  • Ensure the rotary dial is moved from the "关机" (Off) position to a measurement range.

10. User Tips

No specific user tips were available from provided reviews or Q&A. However, general best practices for using ground resistance testers include:

  • Always perform a preliminary check of the instrument's functionality before critical measurements.
  • For best accuracy, especially in dry conditions, ensure the soil around auxiliary electrodes is moistened.
  • When possible, use the 3-wire or 4-wire method for more accurate ground resistance measurements compared to the 2-wire method.
  • Keep the test leads untangled and in good condition to avoid measurement errors.

11. Warranty and Support
