5. Setup Guide

5.1 Initial Charging

Before first use, fully charge the 2400mAh battery. You can charge the device using either the provided charging base or directly via the Type-C port on the radio unit. Connect the Type-C cable to the radio and a compatible power adapter, or place the radio in the charging base and connect the adapter to the base.

5.2 Attaching the Antenna

Carefully screw the provided antenna onto the antenna connector at the top of the radio. Ensure it is securely fastened but do not overtighten. For optimal performance, always use an antenna compatible with the frequency band you intend to operate on. If operating on the 18-64MHz range, a specific antenna for that range (e.g., a CB 27MHz antenna or a 50MHz antenna) must be used and replaced accordingly.

5.3 Programming Channels

The Irradio UV-98 Plus requires a dedicated Type-C programming cable (provided by the manufacturer) to connect to a computer for channel programming. Channel programming is performed using the UV-98 PLUS frequency writing software. Standard mobile phone data cables or generic frequency writing cables will not work. If you cannot locate the frequency writing software, please contact the seller for assistance.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Power On/Off and Volume

To power on the radio, rotate the top-right knob clockwise. Continue rotating to adjust the volume. To power off, rotate the knob counter-clockwise until it clicks.

6.2 Frequency and Channel Selection

The radio supports 1024 memory channels and three VFO (Variable Frequency Oscillator) channels. Use the keypad to directly input frequencies or navigate through stored channels. The 2.4-inch screen will display the current frequency, channel alias, and other relevant information.

6.3 Transmission (PTT)

Press and hold the Push-To-Talk (PTT) button on the side of the radio to transmit. Release the button to receive. The UV-98 Plus supports triple PTT transmission, allowing for more flexible communication.

6.4 GPS APRS Functionality

The GPS APRS feature allows you to automatically or manually send your GPS location data over the APRS network. This enables other users to view your real-time location on a map. Consult the detailed software manual for specific configuration and operation of the GPS APRS feature.

6.5 Cross Band Repeater

The cross-band repeater function allows the radio to receive a signal on one band (e.g., VHF) and retransmit it on another band (e.g., UHF), effectively extending the communication range. Refer to the full user manual for detailed setup and activation procedures for this feature.

6.6 Scanning Functions

  • Frequency Scanning: Scans through a defined frequency range to find active signals.
  • Channel Scanning: Scans through programmed memory channels.
  • Spectrum Scanning: Provides a visual representation of activity across a frequency spectrum.
  • One-Click Frequency Measurement: Quickly identifies the frequency of an incoming signal.

6.7 VOX Function

The Voice Operated Exchange (VOX) function allows for hands-free transmission. When activated, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice and stop transmitting when you stop speaking. Adjust VOX sensitivity in the radio's menu to prevent accidental transmissions or missed speech.

6.8 NOAA Weather Channels (US Only)

For users in the United States, the radio can receive 11 NOAA weather forecast channels, providing timely weather alerts and information.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Wipe the radio's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the charging port and antenna connector are free from dust and debris.

7.2 Battery Care

To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Store the radio and battery in a cool, dry place when not in use. If storing for extended periods, charge the battery to approximately 50% capacity.

7.3 Antenna Care

Always ensure the antenna is properly attached before transmitting. Avoid bending or stressing the antenna, as this can damage the connector or the antenna itself. Use only compatible antennas for specific frequency ranges.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Radio won't turn on:
    • Check if the battery is properly installed and charged.
    • Ensure the power/volume knob is rotated clockwise past the 'off' click.
  • Cannot transmit or receive:
    • Verify the antenna is securely attached.
    • Check if you are on the correct frequency/channel and mode (e.g., FM, AM, SSB).
    • Ensure the battery has sufficient charge.
    • Confirm that the squelch level is not set too high, blocking weak signals.
  • GPS function not working:
    • Ensure you are in an open area with a clear view of the sky.
    • Note that GPS functionality may be restricted or unavailable in certain regions (e.g., some Russian locations).
  • Programming issues:
    • Use only the dedicated Type-C programming cable provided by the manufacturer.
    • Ensure you are using the correct UV-98 PLUS frequency writing software.
    • If problems persist, contact the seller for software and support.
  • Poor audio quality:
    • Adjust the volume.
    • Check antenna connection.
    • Move to an area with better signal reception.

9. User Tips

  • Programming Software: Many users find it challenging to locate the correct programming software. Always contact the seller directly if you need the UV-98 PLUS frequency writing software and the dedicated Type-C programming cable. Generic cables will not work.
  • Antenna Matching: For optimal performance, especially when operating on specific bands like 18-64MHz, ensure you use an antenna specifically designed and tuned for that frequency range. The included antenna is a general-purpose antenna, and specialized antennas will improve performance on their intended bands.
  • GPS Functionality: Be aware that GPS features might be regionally restricted or less accurate in certain areas. Always test the GPS functionality in an open environment to confirm its operation in your location.

10. Warranty and Support

The Irradio UV-98 Plus Walkie Talkie comes with a standard manufacturer's warranty. For specific warranty terms, duration, and conditions, please refer to the documentation provided with your purchase or contact the seller directly. In case of technical issues, troubleshooting assistance, or inquiries about replacement parts, please reach out to the seller's customer support. They can provide specialized guidance for your device.
