  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves.
  • Ensure the work area is well-lit and clear of obstructions.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating the tool.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
  • Always disconnect the battery pack before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool.
  • Use the correct tool for your application. Do not force the tool.
  • Maintain the tool with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean.
  • Store idle tools out of reach of children and untrained persons.

3. Setup and Assembly

3.1 Battery Installation and Removal

  1. To install the battery: Align the battery pack with the grooves in the tool's handle and slide it in until it clicks securely into place.
  2. To remove the battery: Press the release button on the battery pack and slide it out of the tool.

Note: This product is sold as a bare tool. An 18V Makita Lithium-Ion battery and charger are required and sold separately.

3.2 Installing and Removing Drill Bits/Screwdriver Bits

  1. Keyless Chuck Operation: Hold the rear sleeve of the chuck with one hand and rotate the front sleeve counter-clockwise to open the chuck jaws.
  2. Insert the drill bit or screwdriver bit fully into the chuck jaws.
  3. Rotate the front sleeve clockwise to tighten the chuck jaws securely around the bit. Ensure the bit is centered and firmly gripped.
  4. To remove the bit, reverse the process: hold the rear sleeve and rotate the front sleeve counter-clockwise to loosen the jaws.

3.3 Adjusting Torque Settings

The torque adjustment ring (located behind the chuck) allows you to select from 21 different torque settings. Rotate the ring to align the desired number with the indicator mark on the drill body. Lower numbers are for small screws or soft materials, while higher numbers are for larger screws or harder materials. The drill symbol setting is for drilling applications.

3.4 Forward/Reverse Switch

A switch located above the trigger controls the direction of rotation. Push the switch to the left for forward rotation (tightening screws, drilling) and to the right for reverse rotation (loosening screws). Center position locks the trigger to prevent accidental startup.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On/Off and Speed Control

  1. Ensure the forward/reverse switch is set to the desired direction (forward or reverse).
  2. To start the tool, pull the trigger switch. The speed of the tool is controlled by the amount of pressure applied to the trigger; more pressure results in higher speed.
  3. To stop the tool, release the trigger switch.

4.2 LED Work Light

The integrated LED work light automatically illuminates when the trigger is pulled, providing visibility in dimly lit work areas. It turns off shortly after the trigger is released.

4.3 Drilling and Screwdriving Techniques

  • Drilling: Select the appropriate drill bit and torque setting (drill symbol). Apply steady, even pressure. For harder materials, use a slower speed and allow the drill to do the work.
  • Screwdriving: Select the appropriate screwdriver bit and torque setting. Start with a lower torque setting and increase if necessary to prevent stripping screw heads or over-tightening.
  • Impact Function: As an impact drill, it provides additional rotational force for drilling into masonry or tough materials. Ensure the tool is set to the impact drilling mode (if available, typically indicated by a hammer symbol on the torque ring) for such applications.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

  • Regularly clean the ventilation openings and the tool housing with a soft, damp cloth.
  • The mechanical dustproof design helps prevent dust ingress, but periodic cleaning is still recommended.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

5.2 Storage

  • Store the tool in a dry, secure place out of reach of children.
  • Remove the battery pack before storing for extended periods.
  • Avoid storing in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

5.3 Brushless Motor

The brushless motor in your DDF487 requires less maintenance compared to traditional brushed motors, as there are no carbon brushes to replace. This contributes to a longer tool lifespan and consistent performance.

6. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Tool does not start:
    • Check if the battery pack is fully charged and properly installed.
    • Ensure the forward/reverse switch is not in the center (locked) position.
  • Reduced power or speed:
    • The battery might be low on charge. Recharge the battery.
    • The bit might be dull or incorrect for the material. Replace or sharpen the bit.
  • Bit slipping in chuck:
    • Ensure the chuck is tightened securely.
    • Check if the bit shank is clean and free of debris.
  • Overheating:
    • Allow the tool to cool down.
    • Ensure ventilation holes are not blocked.
    • Avoid continuous heavy-duty use without breaks.
