2. Safety Guidelines

Please read and understand all safety instructions before operating the instrument. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in injury or damage to the device.

  • Eye Protection: Never look directly at the sun through the telescope, as this can cause severe eye damage.
  • Handling: Handle the instrument with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts, which can affect its calibration and accuracy.
  • Environmental Conditions: While the instrument is dustproof and waterproof, avoid prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions (heavy rain, direct sunlight, extreme temperatures) to ensure longevity.
  • Cleaning: Use only soft, lint-free cloths for cleaning optical components. Avoid abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.
  • Storage: Store the instrument in its protective case in a dry, temperature-controlled environment when not in use.
  • Maintenance: Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the instrument yourself. Refer to qualified service personnel for any repairs.

Key components of the SNDWAY Automatic Level.

  • Eyepiece: For viewing the target and crosshairs.
  • Level Round Bubble: Used for initial coarse leveling of the instrument.
  • 360° Dial: For measuring horizontal angles.
  • Objective Lens: The front lens of the telescope, responsible for gathering light and forming the image.
  • Focus Knob: Adjusts the clarity of the target image.
  • Horizontal Fine Motion Screws: For precise horizontal aiming.
  • Leveling Screws: Three screws on the base for fine-tuning the instrument's level.

5. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your automatic level for accurate measurements:

  1. Mounting: Securely attach the automatic level to a stable tripod. Ensure the tripod legs are spread wide and firmly planted on the ground.
  2. Coarse Leveling: Adjust the tripod legs to bring the circular bubble (Level Round Bubble) roughly to the center.
  3. Fine Leveling: Use the three leveling screws on the instrument's base to precisely center the circular bubble. The automatic compensator will then take over to ensure the line of sight is perfectly horizontal.

Ensure the horizontal bubble is within the black circle for the compensator to function correctly.

The instrument features a 15-wide automatic compensator. As long as the horizontal bubble is within the black circle, the compensator will automatically flatten the line of sight, ensuring accuracy without further manual adjustment.

6. Operation

Once the level is set up and leveled, you can begin taking measurements:

  1. Aiming: Loosen the horizontal clamp and roughly aim the telescope towards the leveling staff. Tighten the clamp.
  2. Focusing: Look through the eyepiece and adjust the focus knob until the image of the staff is clear and sharp.
  3. Fine Aiming: Use the horizontal fine motion screw to precisely align the vertical crosshair with the staff.
  4. Reading: Read the measurement on the leveling staff where the horizontal crosshair intersects it.
  5. Magnification: Both SW-32A and SW-32B models offer 32x magnification, allowing for clear readings at significant distances. For example, if you can clearly see a 2mm scale on a staff at 2 meters with the naked eye, with the 32x level, you can clearly see the same 2mm scale at 64 meters (2m x 32).

The 32x magnification provides high accuracy, reaching ±1.5mm.

The SW-32B model features a larger optical imaging system with a 42mm objective lens, providing a clearer viewing angle (1° 20') for stable observation compared to the SW-32A's 38mm objective lens.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your automatic level:

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the exterior of the instrument with a soft, damp cloth. For optical surfaces (objective lens, eyepiece), use a lens brush to remove dust, then gently wipe with a clean, lint-free lens cloth and a specialized optical cleaning solution if necessary.
  • Dust and Water Protection: The instrument is designed to be dustproof and waterproof. However, after use in wet or dusty conditions, always wipe it clean and dry before storing.
  • Storage: Always store the level in its original portable suitcase when not in use. This protects it from dust, moisture, and physical damage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Compensator Care: The compensator is a delicate component. Avoid sudden movements or impacts that could affect its internal structure.

8. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

  • Issue: Instrument not leveling accurately after prolonged use.
Cause: The compensator's internal structure might be unstable, or the bubble wrap (damping mechanism) may not be functioning optimally. This can lead to a decrease in accuracy over time.
Solution: Ensure the circular bubble is perfectly centered during setup. If the issue persists, the compensator may require professional calibration or repair.
  • Issue: Image appears blurry or out of focus.
Cause: Improper focus or eyepiece adjustment.
Solution: Adjust the focus knob until the target is sharp. Also, adjust the eyepiece diopter for your vision until the crosshairs are clear.
  • Issue: Circular bubble does not center.
Cause: Tripod is unstable or ground is uneven.
Solution: Ensure the tripod is firmly set on stable ground. Adjust tripod legs first for coarse leveling, then use the leveling screws for fine adjustment.
  • Issue: Readings are inconsistent.
Cause: Instrument not stable, compensator malfunction, or environmental factors (wind, vibration).
Solution: Check tripod stability. Verify compensator is working by gently tapping the instrument; the crosshairs should quickly return to position. Minimize external vibrations. If compensator is faulty, professional service is needed.

10. User Tips

  • Stable Setup is Key: Always ensure your tripod is on solid, level ground. Even minor instability can affect measurement accuracy.
  • Check the Bubble: Before each critical measurement, quickly verify that the circular bubble is centered. While the compensator handles fine leveling, a well-centered bubble ensures the compensator operates within its optimal range.
  • Clear Line of Sight: Ensure there are no obstructions between the level and the staff. Heat shimmer on hot days can also affect readings over long distances.
