4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to install your PC components into the ZALMAN P40 Ds case.
4.1 Unpacking and Preparation
- Carefully remove the PC case from its packaging.
- Place the case on a stable, flat surface.
- Identify the accessory box and set it aside.

4.2 Removing Panels
- Side Tempered Glass Panel: Carefully unscrew the thumbscrews securing the tempered glass side panel. Gently pull the panel away from the chassis and set it aside on a soft, flat surface to prevent scratches.
- Top Panel: The top panel is designed for easy removal. Locate the release mechanism or screws (if any) and lift the panel off.
- Bottom Panel: The bottom panel, which includes a magnetic dust filter, can also be removed for easier access during installation.
- Rear Panel: The solid rear side panel can be removed by unscrewing the thumbscrews and sliding it off. This provides access to the cable management area.
4.3 Motherboard Installation
- Install the I/O shield (if not pre-installed on your motherboard) into the rear opening of the case.
- Align your motherboard with the standoffs inside the case. Ensure the standoffs match your motherboard's form factor (E-ATX, ATX, M-ATX, Mini-ITX).
- Secure the motherboard with the appropriate screws from the accessory box.
4.4 Power Supply Unit (PSU) Installation
- The ZALMAN P40 Ds features a dual-chamber design, with the PSU mounted in the rear chamber.
- Slide your ATX PSU into its designated bay from the rear of the case.
- Secure the PSU with screws from the accessory box.
4.5 Storage Drive Installation
- 3.5" HDDs: Install up to two 3.5" HDDs in the dedicated drive cages, typically located in the PSU shroud area.
- 2.5" SSDs: Install up to two 2.5" SSDs on the designated mounting points, often found behind the motherboard tray or on the PSU shroud.
4.6 Graphics Card (GPU) Installation
- Horizontal Mount: Remove the necessary PCI-E slot covers at the rear of the case. Insert your GPU into the motherboard's PCI-E slot and secure it with screws.
- Vertical Mount: The case supports vertical GPU mounting (3 vertical slots). You will need a compatible PCI-E riser cable (sold separately) for this configuration. Install the GPU into the vertical bracket and secure it.
- VGA Holder: Utilize the included VGA holder to prevent GPU sag, especially for larger graphics cards.
4.7 Cooling System Installation (Fans & Radiators)
The P40 Ds offers extensive cooling options:
- Top: Install up to 3x 120mm or 2x 140mm fans, or a 280mm/360mm radiator.
- Side: Install up to 3x 120mm fans, or a 280mm/360mm radiator.
- Rear: Install 1x 120mm fan.
- Bottom: Install up to 3x 120mm fans.
Ensure proper airflow direction for optimal cooling.
4.8 Cable Management
Utilize the 25mm cable management clearance behind the motherboard tray and the various tie-down points to route and secure cables neatly. This improves airflow and aesthetics.
4.9 Connecting Front Panel I/O
Connect the front panel cables (USB 3.0, USB 2.0, USB Type-C, HD Audio, Power Switch, Reset Switch, Power LED, HDD LED) to the corresponding headers on your motherboard. Refer to your motherboard manual for exact header locations.
4.10 Reattaching Panels
Once all components are installed and cables are managed, carefully reattach all panels, starting with the rear side panel, then the top and bottom, and finally the tempered glass side panel. Secure all thumbscrews.
5. Operation
5.1 Powering On
After ensuring all connections are secure, connect your PC to a power source and press the power button on the front I/O panel. Your system should boot up.
5.2 Front Panel I/O Ports
The front I/O panel provides convenient access to:
- 2x USB 3.0 ports
- 2x USB 2.0 ports
- 1x USB Type-C port
- HD Audio jacks (Headphone/Microphone)
- Power Button
- Reset Button
5.3 Integrated LCD Display
The ZALMAN P40 Ds features an integrated LCD display on the front panel. This display provides real-time monitoring of critical system information, such as:
- CPU Temperature
- GPU Temperature
- Fan RPM (Rotations Per Minute)
- Other customizable system stats
Ensure the necessary internal connections for the LCD display are made to your motherboard (refer to the case's internal wiring for specific headers, typically a USB header).

5.4 A-RGB Lighting Control
If your case fans or other components feature A-RGB lighting, connect them to a compatible A-RGB header on your motherboard or a dedicated A-RGB controller. Lighting effects can typically be controlled via motherboard software or a physical controller (if included with your fans/components).
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps ensure optimal performance and longevity of your PC components.
- Dust Filters: The ZALMAN P40 Ds is equipped with magnetic dust filters on the top, bottom, and side panels. Regularly remove and clean these filters by rinsing them with water or using a soft brush/vacuum. Ensure they are completely dry before reattaching.
- Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior surfaces, including the tempered glass, with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that may scratch the finish. For tempered glass, use a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
- Interior Cleaning: Periodically, with the system powered off and unplugged, use compressed air to remove dust buildup from internal components like fans, heatsinks, and radiators.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your PC build, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Power:
- Ensure the PSU is switched on at the back.
- Check all power cables (24-pin ATX, 8-pin CPU, GPU power) are securely connected.
- Verify the front panel power switch cable is correctly connected to the motherboard header.
- Fans Not Spinning / RGB Not Working:
- Check fan power cables are connected to motherboard fan headers or a fan controller.
- Verify A-RGB cables are connected to a compatible A-RGB header or controller.
- Ensure any fan/RGB controllers are receiving power.
- LCD Display Not Working:
- Confirm the internal USB header cable for the LCD display is securely connected to your motherboard.
- Check if any specific software or drivers are required for the LCD display (refer to ZALMAN support if needed).
- No Display Output:
- Ensure your monitor cable is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard's integrated graphics port (unless you are using integrated graphics).
- Reseat the graphics card in its PCI-E slot.
- Check power connections to the graphics card.
8. User Tips
- Cable Management: Take your time with cable routing. The 25mm clearance in the rear chamber is generous, allowing for a clean build that improves airflow and aesthetics.
- Airflow Optimization: With extensive fan support, consider an intake/exhaust fan configuration that maximizes cooling for your specific components. Typically, front/side intake and top/rear exhaust is recommended.
- LCD Customization: Explore any available software or settings for the integrated LCD display to customize the information shown or its appearance.
- Tempered Glass Care: Always handle the tempered glass panel with care. Place it on a soft surface when removed to prevent scratches or damage.
