4. Setup
4.1. Charging the Device
Both the transmitter and receiver units are powered by 3.7V/1000mAh lithium batteries. Before first use, or when the low voltage prompt appears, charge both units using the provided USB-Type-C cable.
- Connect the USB-Type-C cable to the charging port on both the transmitter and receiver.
- Plug the other end of the USB cable into a standard USB power adapter (not included) or a computer USB port.
- The charging indicator will show the charging status. Ensure both units are fully charged before operation.

4.2. Initial Connection
For most functions, you will connect the transmitter to the wire you wish to trace or test. The receiver is then used to detect the signal emitted by the transmitter.
- Connect the red and black crocodile clip test leads from the transmitter to the ends of the wire or cable you intend to test.
- For underground or in-wall detection, ensure proper grounding if required (see section 5.3).
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Line Finding Function (Digital/Analog)
The FY8178 supports both digital and analog modes for tracing metal wires, including power lines, telephone lines, and network lines, whether buried underground or inside walls.

Figure 5.1: Digital vs. Analog Signal Detection.
- Digital Signal Line Finding: Offers strong anti-interference ability and more accurate line finding without noise.
- Analog Signal Tracing: Provides a wide range of received signals and strong sensitivity, suitable for a larger tracing range.
Steps:
- Connect the transmitter to the target wire using the crocodile clips.
- Turn on both the transmitter and receiver units.
- On the transmitter, select either Digital Tone or Analog Tone mode.
- Adjust the transmitter's signal strength using the Level button (1-5 gears) for optimal detection.
- On the receiver, select the corresponding mode (Digital Tone or Analog Tone).
- Use the receiver's probe to scan the area where the wire is suspected to be. The signal strength indicator on the receiver will light up, and an audible tone will increase in intensity as you get closer to the wire.
- Adjust the receiver's volume knob for comfortable listening.

5.2. Wire Continuity (On-Off) Detection
This function allows you to check if a line is in normal use or if there's a break in the circuit.
Steps:
- Connect the red and black crocodile clips from the transmitter to the two ends of the wire you want to test for continuity.
- Turn on the transmitter.
- Press the CONT button on the transmitter.
- Observe the display on the transmitter. If the line is continuous, the display will indicate a closed circuit. If the line is disconnected, it will show an open circuit.

5.3. Underground/In-Wall Wire Search
The FY8178 can detect the direction and positioning of cables buried underground and within walls, with a maximum detection depth of 2 meters.
Steps:
- Connect the transmitter to one end of the buried or in-wall cable.
- For optimal performance in underground detection, use the provided Grounding Pestle. Connect one crocodile clip from the transmitter to the cable and the other to the grounding pestle inserted into the ground near the cable.
- Turn on the transmitter and select either Digital or Analog Tone mode. Adjust the signal level as needed.
- Use the receiver with its flexible probe to scan the area above the suspected cable path.
- Follow the increasing signal strength indicated by the LEDs and audio tone to trace the cable's route.

5.4. Flashlight Function
The receiver unit is equipped with a flashlight for use in low-light conditions. To activate the flashlight, press the ON/OFF/Torch button on the receiver.
6. Maintenance
- Keep the device clean and dry. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Store the device in its carrying case when not in use to protect it from dust and physical damage.
- Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
- Regularly charge the batteries to maintain their lifespan, even if the device is not used frequently.
- If the device will not be used for an extended period, charge it fully and then store it in a cool, dry place.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1. No Power / Device Not Turning On
- Check if the batteries are charged. Connect both units to the USB-Type-C charger and allow them to charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on again.
- Ensure the power button is pressed firmly and held for a few seconds to turn on the device.
7.2. Weak or No Signal Detection
- Verify that both the transmitter and receiver are turned on and in the correct mode (Digital or Analog).
- Ensure the transmitter is properly connected to the target wire.
- Increase the transmitter's signal strength using the 'Level' button.
- Check for strong electromagnetic interference in the area, which can affect signal detection.
- Ensure the receiver's probe is close enough to the suspected wire.
- For underground detection, ensure the grounding pestle is properly inserted into moist soil.
7.3. Inaccurate Continuity Reading
- Ensure the crocodile clips are making good contact with the wire ends.
- Check the wire for any visible damage or breaks.

9. User Tips
- For best results when tracing underground wires, ensure the soil is moist. If the soil is dry, wetting the area around the grounding pestle can improve signal transmission.
- When tracing wires in noisy environments, utilize the digital tone mode for better accuracy and reduced interference.
- Always start with a lower sensitivity setting on the receiver and gradually increase it until a clear signal is detected to avoid false positives.
- The flexible probe on the receiver can be bent to navigate tight spaces or reach difficult angles for detection.
