4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Battery Installation

The ZG-303Z sensor requires 2 LR03 AAA batteries (not included). To install:

  1. Locate the battery cover on the top part of the sensor (refer to Figure 2).
  2. Remove the battery cover.
  3. Insert two LR03 AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Replace the battery cover securely.

4.2 Sensor Placement and Initial Setup

  1. Clean the Sensor: Before inserting the sensor into the soil, ensure that the surface of the soil moisture sensor is clean.
  2. Insert into Soil: Insert the sensor into the soil for no less than 2/3 of its length. Ensure that the sensing surface of the moisture sensor is in direct contact with the soil for accurate readings. Avoid inserting into overly compacted soil or areas with large air pockets.
  3. Check for Water: Verify there is no standing water on the soil moisture sensor surface after insertion.
  4. Initial Detection: After insertion, wait approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute for the sensor to detect and stabilize readings. The sensor will collect soil moisture and temperature/humidity values every 30 seconds.

4.3 Network Configuration (Zigbee)

The ZG-303Z operates on Zigbee 3.0 protocol and requires a Zigbee Gateway to connect to your home network and the mobile application.

  1. Ensure your Zigbee Gateway is powered on and connected to your WiFi router.
  2. Open the mobile application (e.g., Tuya Smart, Smart Life) and add your Zigbee Gateway if not already done.
  3. On the ZG-303Z sensor, long press the Reset Key for 3 seconds to enter configuration network mode. The indicator light will flash, indicating it's ready for pairing.
  4. In the mobile application, follow the instructions to add a new sub-device under your Zigbee Gateway. The app should detect the ZG-303Z sensor.
  5. Once successfully paired, the indicator light on the sensor will stop flashing, and the device will appear in your app.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 APP Remote Monitoring

After successful pairing, you can monitor various parameters in real-time through the mobile application.

  • Real-time Data: The app displays current air temperature, humidity value, and soil moisture percentage.
  • History Records: View historical data and trends for all monitored parameters. The sensor collects data approximately every 30 seconds to 1 minute after insertion.

5.2 Water Shortage Warning

Set custom thresholds in the app to receive alerts when your plants need watering.

  1. Navigate to the sensor settings in the mobile app.
  2. Find the 'Water shortage warning' option.
  3. Adjust the percentage value to your desired threshold. When the soil moisture drops below this level, you will receive a notification.

5.3 Temperature Unit Conversion

You can switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F) in the app settings.

  1. Go to the sensor settings in the mobile app.
  2. Select 'Temp Unit Convert'.
  3. Choose your preferred unit (°C or °F).

5.4 Voice Control

Integrate your sensor with Amazon Alexa or Google Home for convenient voice commands.

  1. Ensure your Alexa or Google Home device is linked to your mobile application account.
  2. Use commands such as:
    • "Alexa/Google, what is the temperature now?"
    • "Alexa/Google, what is the soil moisture of [plant name]?"

6. Calibration

The sensor allows for calibration of humidity, temperature, and soil humidity to ensure accuracy.

  1. Access the sensor settings in your mobile application.
  2. Select the desired calibration option: 'Humidity Calibration', 'Temp Calibration', or 'Soil Humidity Calibration'.
  3. Adjust the values as needed within the specified ranges:
    • Humidity Calibration: -20% to 20%
    • Temperature Calibration: -2°C to 2°C
    • Soil Humidity Calibration: -30% to 30%
  4. After setting the parameters, you need to press the 'SET' key on the sensor once so that they can take effect.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Regularly clean the soil moisture sensor probe to ensure accurate readings. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away any soil residue. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

7.2 Battery Replacement

The sensor will provide a low battery alarm via the app. Replace the two LR03 AAA batteries promptly to ensure continuous monitoring. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.

7.3 Waterproof Rating

The sensor is designed to withstand watering from the top. However, it is NOT designed to be fully submerged or soaked in water. Ensure the top part of the sensor, especially the battery compartment, does not get submerged.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Sensor not connecting to app:
    Ensure the Zigbee Gateway is online and within range. Long press the sensor's Reset Key for 3 seconds to re-enter pairing mode and try adding it again in the app. Check battery levels.
  • Inaccurate readings:
    Clean the sensor probe thoroughly. Ensure the sensor is inserted correctly into the soil, making good contact. Perform calibration as described in Section 6. Check for any obstructions or extreme environmental conditions.
  • App not updating data:
    Verify the sensor has sufficient battery. Check the Zigbee Gateway's internet connection. Ensure the sensor is within the Zigbee network range. Restart the mobile application.
  • Voice control not working:
    Confirm that your Alexa/Google Home device is properly linked to your smart home app account. Check your internet connection. Ensure the device name in the app is recognized by your voice assistant.

9. User Tips

  • For potted plants, place the sensor in the middle of the pot, away from the edges, for a representative moisture reading.
  • When monitoring outdoor crops or gardens, consider using multiple sensors for different areas to get a comprehensive overview.
  • Regularly check the battery percentage in the app to avoid interruptions in monitoring.
  • Utilize the history records feature to understand your plants' watering needs over time and adjust your care routine accordingly.
