4. Operating Instructions
Familiarize yourself with the control panel and operating modes for effective metal detection.
4.1 Control Panel Overview

Figure 4.1: Close-up of the GT860 control panel and LED display.
The control unit features a 3-inch x 2.2-inch HD LED display and several buttons:
- Power Button: Turns the detector ON/OFF.
- SENS (Sensitivity) Button: Adjusts the detection sensitivity. Use Up/Down arrows to change levels.
- PP (Pinpoint) Button: Activates pinpoint mode for precise target location.
- MODE Button: Cycles through the five recognition modes.
- Up/Down Arrows: Navigate menus, adjust sensitivity, or change discrimination settings.
- Volume Control: Adjusts the audio alarm volume.
4.2 Operating Modes
The GT860 offers five distinct operating modes:
- Full Metal Mode: Detects all types of metal without discrimination. Ideal for general searching or when you don't want to miss any targets.
- DISC (Discrimination) Mode: Allows you to eliminate unwanted metals (e.g., iron trash) from detection. Use the Up/Down arrows to adjust the discrimination range.
- Memory Mode: Stores and recalls specific discrimination patterns.
- Jewelry Mode: Optimized for detecting small precious metals like rings, earrings, and other jewelry.
- PINPOINT Mode: Once a target is detected, press the PP button to narrow down its exact location for easier recovery.
4.3 Detection Process
- Power On: Press the Power button to turn on the detector.
- Select Mode: Use the MODE button to choose your desired detection mode (e.g., DISC mode to filter out iron).
- Adjust Sensitivity: Press SENS and use the Up/Down arrows to set the sensitivity. Start with a moderate level and increase if needed, being mindful of false signals from ground mineralization.
- Sweep the Search Coil: Hold the detector comfortably and sweep the search coil slowly and steadily from side to side, keeping it parallel to the ground and about 1-2 inches above the surface.
- Identify Target: When a metal object is detected, the LCD display will show an alarm indication, and an audible tone will sound. The display will also provide numerical identification for different metals (Ferrous, Gold, Non-Ferrous, Silver) and an estimated depth.
- Pinpoint Target: Once a target is indicated, press the PP button to pinpoint its exact location. Move the coil slowly over the area until the strongest signal is heard/seen, indicating the center of the target.

5. Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the detector with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Search Coil: The 10-inch search coil is IP68 waterproof and can be submerged in water. However, the control unit is NOT waterproof. Avoid submerging the control unit.
- Battery Care: Remove batteries if the detector will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage.
- Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Cable Inspection: Regularly check all cables and connections for signs of wear or damage.
6. Troubleshooting
- No Power:
- Check if batteries are correctly installed with proper polarity.
- Replace old batteries with fresh 9V batteries.
- False Signals/Chatter:
- Reduce sensitivity.
- Ensure the search coil cable is tightly wound around the shaft and securely connected.
- Move away from power lines, fences, or other sources of electromagnetic interference.
- Perform ground balance if available (not explicitly mentioned for this model, but a general tip).
- Poor Detection Depth:
- Increase sensitivity.
- Ensure the search coil is swept parallel to the ground and close to the surface.
- Check battery levels; low batteries can affect performance.
- Display Not Working:
- Check battery connection and power.
- Ensure the unit is not exposed to extreme temperatures.

8. User Tips
While no specific user reviews or Q&A were provided for this model, here are some general tips for metal detector users:
- Practice: Spend time in a known area (like your backyard) with various metal objects to get familiar with the detector's responses to different targets and depths.
- Slow Sweeping: Always sweep the coil slowly. Rushing can cause you to miss targets.
- Overlap Sweeps: Ensure each sweep slightly overlaps the previous one to cover the ground thoroughly.
- Headphones: Using headphones can help you hear subtle target signals that might be missed otherwise, especially in noisy environments.
- Battery Life: Always carry spare batteries, especially for longer detecting sessions.
- Environmental Factors: Be aware that highly mineralized ground can cause false signals. Adjust sensitivity or use discrimination to mitigate this.
