SKYSHL SS305T Optical Time Domain Reflectometer User Manual

Model: SS305T-2A1

1. Introduction

The SKYSHL SS305T Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is a crucial instrument designed for certifying the performance of new fiber optic links and diagnosing issues in existing fiber networks. As fiber optic technology advances, OTDR testing methods are essential for building, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic systems.

The SS305T series measures fiber length and overall optical attenuation within a circuit. The analyzed data provides valuable insights into the integrity of the fiber and any passive optical components (such as connectors, splices, splitters, and multiplexers) along the cable path.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Performing an Auto OTDR Test

The Auto OTDR function simplifies testing, allowing even untrained technicians to perform accurate measurements quickly.

  1. From the main menu, select the "Auto OTDR" icon.
  2. On the Auto OTDR screen, select the desired test wavelength (e.g., 1310nm or 1550nm) and test time (e.g., 5s, 15s, 30s).
  3. Click the "Auto Test" button to initiate the test. The device will automatically identify the link, set optimal parameters, and begin data acquisition.
  4. Once the test is complete, the OTDR trace will be displayed. You can click the "Cursor" button to select A/B cursors for detailed analysis of specific points on the trace.
  5. To view a simplified graphical representation of events, click the "Event Map" button.

5.2. Interpreting OTDR Test Curves and Events

The OTDR trace provides a wealth of information about the fiber link:

  • Slope of the Trace: Represents the attenuation coefficient of the fiber, calibrated in dB/km. A steeper slope indicates higher attenuation.
  • Events: Connectors and splices are identified as "events." These typically show a loss.
  • Reflective Peaks: Connectors and mechanical splices will also exhibit a reflective peak. The height of this peak indicates the amount of reflection at that event.
  • Dead Zones: The event dead zone (EDZ) and attenuation dead zone (ADZ) refer to the minimum distance between two events that the OTDR can distinguish. The SS305T boasts very short dead zones (3.0m EDZ, 8.0m ADZ) for precise fault detection.

5.3. Event Map/Graphics Analysis Mode

The Event Map simplifies fiber fault analysis by providing a graphical representation of the network topology. It uses intelligent algorithms to dynamically locate and identify all network components and fault locations with maximum resolution.

  • Navigate to the "Event Map" function from the main menu or after an OTDR test.
  • The screen will display a simplified diagram of the fiber link, showing connectors, splices, and any detected faults.
  • Each event will be labeled with its type, distance, and loss, often indicating a "PASS" or "FAIL" status for quick assessment.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your SKYSHL SS305T OTDR:

  • Connector Cleaning: Always keep fiber optic connectors clean. Use the provided cotton swab stick and appropriate fiber optic cleaning solutions to clean the OTDR ports and fiber connectors before each use. Contaminated connectors are a primary cause of inaccurate measurements and potential damage.
  • Battery Care: Recharge the 3.7V/4000mAh lithium battery regularly. Avoid completely draining the battery or leaving it uncharged for extended periods. For long-term storage, charge the battery to approximately 50-70%.
  • Software Updates: Check the manufacturer's website periodically for any available firmware or software updates to ensure optimal performance and access to new features.
  • Storage: Store the device in its Oxford backpack in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and humidity.
  • Physical Protection: The device is designed for outdoor use, but avoid dropping it or subjecting it to severe impacts. Keep protective covers on ports when not in use.
