5. Installation / Setup

5.1 Choosing the Right Mortise

Carefully measure your door's existing mortise or the required dimensions for your smart lock. Refer to the 'Mortise Size Diagrams' (Figure 3) in the Specifications section to match the backset, center distance, and faceplate length to your door's requirements. The 'single point' models typically feature a latch and deadbolt, while 'multi-point' models include additional hook bolts for enhanced security.

5.2 Installation Steps

  1. Prepare the Door: Ensure the door is properly prepped with the correct mortise cutout according to the dimensions of your chosen JCSMARTS mortise.
  2. Insert the Mortise: Slide the mortise body into the mortise pocket in the door edge. Ensure it sits flush with the door edge.
  3. Secure the Faceplate: Fasten the mortise faceplate to the door edge using the provided screws. Do not overtighten.
  4. Install Spindle and Cylinder: Insert the smart lock's spindle through the mortise's follower (square hole) and then install the smart lock's cylinder (if applicable) into the designated opening.
  5. Attach Smart Lock Handles/Panels: Follow the instructions provided with your specific smart lock system to attach the interior and exterior handles/panels, ensuring they align correctly with the mortise.
  6. Install Strike Plate: Install the strike plate on the door frame, ensuring proper alignment with the mortise's latch and deadbolt/hook bolts when the door is closed.
  7. Test Functionality: Before closing the door, test the latch, deadbolt, and hook bolts (if multi-point) to ensure smooth operation. Once satisfied, close the door and test the locking and unlocking mechanisms of your smart lock system.

6. Operation

The JCSMARTS mortise functions as the core locking mechanism for your smart lock system. Its operation is directly controlled by the smart lock's electronics and mechanical components.

  • Latching: The spring-loaded latch bolt retracts when the door handle is turned and extends when released, holding the door closed.
  • Deadbolting: The deadbolt extends into the strike plate when the smart lock is engaged (e.g., via keypad, fingerprint, app, or key), providing additional security.
  • Hook Bolts (Multi-Point Mortises): For multi-point models, additional hook bolts extend into the door frame when the smart lock is engaged, providing multiple locking points along the door edge for enhanced resistance against forced entry.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the exposed parts of the mortise (faceplate, latch, deadbolt, hook bolts) with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and grime. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Lubrication: Apply a small amount of graphite-based lubricant or silicone spray to the moving parts of the latch, deadbolt, and hook bolts once a year to ensure smooth operation. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt.
