3.1.2. Power Supply

The WS90 is primarily solar-powered. For backup, insert 2 x AA 1.5V batteries (not included). Rechargeable Li-batteries are recommended. For the auto-heater function, an external power cable (sold separately) is required.

Important Power Supply Notes for Auto-Heater:

  • We recommend using a 12V power supply for the auto-heater, as it efficiently melts snow covering the battery compartment, which can affect wind speed measurement. A 12V supply also allows for longer power cable runs.
  • If remote power is not needed, a 5V power supply can be used, but the heating plate will be less efficient, and snow melting will be slower.
  • CRITICAL: The supply voltage range can only be 5V to 20V. Exceeding this range is dangerous and will damage the WS90.

3.1.3. Snow & Ice Considerations

Snow and ice can affect the accuracy of readings. The WS90 has a heating plate to mitigate this:

  • Top Snow (①): Snow on the very top cannot be heated by the heating plate. It must be manually cleared to prevent interference with solar power supply and rain measurement.
  • Middle Snow (②): Snow in the middle affects wind speed measurement. The heating plate is located here. Connect the heating cable (③) to melt this snow.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1. Rainfall Accuracy

The WS90's haptic rain sensor is generally accurate, but under certain conditions (e.g., specific raindrop sizes, high wind speeds), minor deviations in daily rainfall readings may occur. If highly precise rainfall data is critical, consider using the WH40 Rain Gauge in conjunction with the WS90 for comparative analysis. For general use without strict per-rain event accuracy requirements, the WS90 performs well over time.

Rainfall Data Comparison
Figure 6.1: Daily Rain Deviation Comparison (WH40 vs WS90)

6.1.1. Calibrating WS90 Rainfall

The WS90 allows for user calibration of the rain sensor. To perform proper calibration:

  1. A reference for rainfall recording is needed, ideally with the ability to capture rain rate. The WH40 Rain Gauge can serve this purpose.
  2. You can adjust five rain gain parameters: Piezo Rain1 to Rain5. Typically, leave Rain1 as is unless consistent results indicate otherwise.
  3. If you have recorded rain data (e.g., 6.0mm from reference, 7.5mm from WS90), you can adjust the gain. For example, set Rain4 gain to 6/7.5 = 0.8. For simpler handling, you can initially set Rain2, Rain3, Rain5 to 0.8. Only when different rain rates are recorded, divide the WS90 rain by 0.8 to get 1.0 rain, then recalculate (Reference/WS90/0.8) and precisely fill in the corresponding rain gain setting.

6.2. Connectivity Issues

If you experience issues with data transmission or connectivity:

  • Check Power: Ensure both the WS90 (solar/batteries) and GW3000 (USB) are powered on.
  • Network Connection: Verify your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection to the GW3000. Ensure your router is functioning correctly.
  • RF Frequency: Confirm that your device's RF frequency (e.g., 433MHz, 868MHz, 915MHz) matches the regional standard for optimal communication between the sensor and gateway.
  • Obstructions: Minimize physical obstructions between the outdoor sensor and the gateway to ensure a clear signal path.
  • Reset: If issues persist, try resetting the GW3000 Gateway using the factory reset button (refer to Figure 2.5).
