5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
The HP-7200B requires 2 x 1.5V (AAA) R03P batteries. To install or replace batteries:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Use a screwdriver to open the cover.
- Insert the batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-).
- Securely close the battery compartment cover.
Note: A low voltage prompt (battery symbol) on the LCD indicates insufficient battery power. Replace batteries promptly.
5.2 Connecting Test Leads
For most measurements (Voltage, Resistance, Capacitance, Diode, Continuity, Frequency, Duty Cycle, Temperature), connect the test leads as follows:
- Insert the black test lead into the COM input jack.
- Insert the red test lead into the V/Ω/Hz/°C/°F input jack.
For current measurements using the clamp, test leads are not required.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 General Operation
- Power On/Off: Rotate the rotary switch from the 'OFF' position to any desired function to power on the meter. Rotate back to 'OFF' to power off.
- Auto Power Off: The meter will automatically shut down after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery. Press any button or rotate the dial to exit standby mode.
- Backlight/Headlamp: Press and hold the 'HOLD' key for two seconds to turn on the backlight and headlamp. Repeat to turn off.
- Data Hold: Press the 'HOLD' key briefly to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
- Max/Min Measurement: Press the 'MAX/MIN' key to enter Max/Min mode. The meter will display the maximum or minimum value measured. Press again to cycle through Max, Min, and current readings.
- Relative Measurement (REL): Press the 'REL' key to store the current reading as a reference value. Subsequent measurements will be displayed as the difference from this reference. Press again to exit.
6.2 AC/DC Voltage Measurement
- Connect the test leads (black to COM, red to V/Ω/Hz/°C/°F).
- Rotate the rotary switch to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage) position.
- Touch the test probes to the circuit points where you want to measure voltage.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
6.3 AC/DC Current Measurement (Clamp Function)
The HP-7200B can measure AC/DC current up to 400A using its clamp jaws.

Important: For accurate current measurement, the clamp jaws must enclose only ONE conductor. If multiple conductors are enclosed, the readings will be inaccurate.
- Rotate the rotary switch to the 60A~ (AC Current) or 400A~ (AC Current) position. For DC current, select the appropriate DC current range.
- Press the clamp head switch to open the jaws.
- Enclose the single conductor you wish to measure within the jaws. Center the conductor using the centering marks as guides.
- Release the clamp head switch to close the jaws securely around the conductor.
- Read the current value on the LCD display.
Note: For low-current measurements (below 0.1A), loop the wire around the jaw multiple times. The actual current will be the displayed reading divided by the number of turns.
6.4 Resistance, Diode, Continuity, and Capacitance Measurement
- Connect the test leads (black to COM, red to V/Ω/Hz/°C/°F).
- Rotate the rotary switch to the Ω position.
- Press the SEL key to cycle through Resistance (Ω), Diode (►|), Continuity (🔊), and Capacitance (∔) modes.
- For Resistance: Touch the probes across the component. Read the resistance value.
- For Diode: Touch the probes across the diode. Forward bias should show a voltage drop, reverse bias should show OL (open loop).
- For Continuity: Touch the probes across the circuit. If continuity exists (resistance below approx. 50Ω), the buzzer will sound.
- For Capacitance: Ensure the capacitor is discharged before testing. Touch the probes across the capacitor. Read the capacitance value.
6.5 Frequency and Duty Cycle Measurement
- Connect the test leads (black to COM, red to V/Ω/Hz/°C/°F).
- Rotate the rotary switch to the Hz position.
- Press the Hz % key to toggle between Frequency (Hz) and Duty Cycle (%) measurements.
- Touch the test probes to the circuit points.
- Read the frequency or duty cycle value on the LCD display.
6.6 Temperature Measurement
- Connect the temperature probe to the input jacks (ensure correct polarity if applicable, usually red to V/Ω/Hz/°C/°F and black to COM).
- Rotate the rotary switch to the °C/°F position.
- Press the SEL key to select between Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).
- Place the temperature probe on or in the object/environment to be measured.
- Read the temperature value on the LCD display.

6.7 Non-Contact AC Voltage (NCV) Detection
The NCV function allows for safe detection of AC voltage without direct contact with live wires.

- Rotate the rotary switch to the NCV position.
- Move the top part of the clamp meter (the NCV sensor area) close to the wire or electrical outlet you want to test.
- If AC voltage (90V~1000V) is detected, the flashlight will light up and the buzzer will sound, indicating the presence of voltage.

8. Maintenance
8.1 Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input terminals free of dirt and moisture.
8.2 Battery Replacement
When the battery symbol appears on the LCD, replace the batteries immediately to ensure accurate readings. Refer to Section 5.1 for battery installation instructions.
8.3 Storage
If the meter is not to be used for a long period, remove the batteries to prevent battery leakage and damage to the meter. Store the meter in a dry, cool environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Meter does not power on | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries | Check battery polarity or replace batteries. |
| Inaccurate readings | Incorrect function/range selected, damaged test leads, external interference | Verify function/range, inspect test leads, move away from strong electromagnetic fields. |
| "OL" displayed | Overload, open circuit, or out of range measurement | Check if the measured value exceeds the range, or if the circuit is open. |
| No NCV detection | No AC voltage present, or voltage is below detection threshold (90V) | Ensure the circuit is live and voltage is within the detectable range. |
| Clamp current reading is zero or incorrect | Multiple conductors in clamp, low current, or incorrect range | Ensure only one conductor is in the clamp. For low currents, loop the wire multiple times. Select appropriate range. |
10. User Tips
- Auto-Ranging Convenience: The auto-ranging feature simplifies operation by automatically selecting the correct measurement range. However, for faster measurements or specific troubleshooting, manually selecting a range can sometimes be beneficial.
- Low Current Measurement: When measuring very low AC or DC currents with the clamp, you can increase sensitivity by wrapping the wire multiple times through the clamp jaws. Remember to divide the displayed reading by the number of loops to get the actual current.
- NCV for Quick Checks: Use the NCV function as a preliminary safety check to quickly determine if a wire or outlet is live before proceeding with contact measurements.
- Temperature Conversion: Don't forget to use the 'SEL' button in temperature mode to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit as needed for your application.
- Backlight for Dark Areas: The backlight and headlamp feature is very useful when working in dimly lit environments. A long press on the 'HOLD' button activates it.
