Key interfaces and their default functions include:

  • Hall Plug: For motor Hall sensor feedback.
  • Throttle: Connects to the throttle input for speed control.
  • Three Speed: Inputs for low, middle, and high-speed settings.
  • Contactor Line: Red-Yellow for Contactor sensor, Grey-Purple for Ignition.
  • Low Brake (0V): Brake signal input.
  • Reverse: Input for reverse function.
  • Programming Port: Blue, Orange, Black wires for PC programming via the 485 USB cable.
  • Parking: Input for parking function.
  • Ignition (Grey-Purple): Power ignition input.
  • High Brake (12V+): High voltage brake signal input.
  • One-LIN/Hall Meter (White): For speedometer or other meter connections.
  • Alternate Port (Black-Brown, Grey-Black): Additional port for alternative functions.

4.2 Installation & Wiring

  1. Mounting: Securely mount the EM550 controller in a location that is protected from excessive heat, vibration, and direct impact. Ensure adequate airflow for cooling. The mounting bolts should be tightened to 25 ± 3N.m.
  2. Motor Connection: Connect the motor phase wires (U, V, W) and Hall sensor wires to the corresponding ports on the controller.
  3. Battery Connection: Connect the battery positive (B+) and negative (B-) terminals to the controller. Ensure correct polarity.
  4. Control Connections: Connect the throttle, brake levers, ignition, and other control signals as per the interface description (Figure 3).
  5. Auxiliary Functions: Note that the EM550 is a universal controller. Some auxiliary functions of your original vehicle (e.g., speedometer display) may require modification or may not function as before. Carefully check the function lines and communication signals of your vehicle before making connections.
  6. Initial Check: Before applying full power, double-check all connections for correctness and security.

5. Operation

Once the controller is correctly installed and wired, you can begin operation:

  1. Power On: Turn on the ignition. The controller will perform a self-check.
  2. Throttle Control: Use the throttle to control the motor speed. The controller's sine wave design ensures smooth and efficient power delivery.
  3. Braking: Apply the brakes as needed. The controller supports both low brake (0V) and high brake (12V+) inputs.
  4. Reverse Function: Activate the reverse input if your vehicle is equipped with this feature.
  5. Three-Speed Modes: Utilize the three-speed inputs to switch between different speed profiles if configured.
  6. Regen Charge: The controller supports regenerative charging, which can help recover energy during braking or deceleration.

6. Programming

The VOTOL EM550 controller is programmable via PC using the included 485 USB cable. This allows for fine-tuning of parameters such as motor characteristics, speed limits, current limits, and other operational settings. Specific programming software and detailed instructions are typically provided by the manufacturer or can be found on their support channels. Connect the 485 USB cable to the controller's programming port and your computer to access these advanced settings.

7. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your EM550 controller, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep Clean: Regularly clean the exterior of the controller to prevent dust and debris buildup, which can affect heat dissipation.
  • Keep Dry: Although rated IP67 waterproof, avoid prolonged submersion or exposure to extreme moisture. Ensure all connections are dry.
  • Inspect Connections: Periodically check all wiring connections for tightness and signs of wear or corrosion. Loose connections can lead to poor performance or damage.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the controller within its specified temperature range. Avoid exposing it to extreme heat or cold.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your EM550 controller, consider the following:

  • No Power/No Response: Check battery connections, ignition switch, and main power fuse.
  • Motor Not Spinning: Verify motor phase wire connections, Hall sensor connections, and throttle input. Ensure the motor is not locked.
  • Abnormal Noise/Vibration: Recheck motor phase and Hall sensor wiring. This could indicate incorrect motor parameter settings if programmable.
  • Auxiliary Functions Not Working: As a universal controller, some original vehicle auxiliary functions (e.g., speedometer) may require modification or may not be directly compatible. Review your vehicle's wiring and the controller's interface carefully.
  • Overheating: Ensure the controller has adequate ventilation and is not overloaded. Check for short circuits in the motor or wiring.

9. User Tips

  • Vehicle Compatibility: When integrating the controller, be aware that some auxiliary functions of your original vehicle (e.g., speedometer display) might require modification or may not function as before, as the controller is a universal version. Verify all wiring and communication signals carefully.
  • Specific Vehicle Integrations: Consider consulting community forums or experienced users for specific vehicle integrations, such as with Surron bikes, as the controller is designed for general BLDC/PMSM applications.
  • Professional Installation: If you lack knowledge in electric kit assembly, it is highly recommended to seek professional assistance for installation to prevent potential damage.

10. Warranty and Support

VOTOL offers a 1-year warranty for the EM550 controller. Please note the following conditions:

  • The buyer is responsible for the return shipping cost for repairing or replacing a new unit under warranty.
  • The warranty does not cover man-made damage.

For any problems or technical assistance, please feel free to contact the seller or manufacturer's support. They will endeavor to help you resolve any issues.
