ETEK EK4Q Automatic Transfer Switch User Manual

Model: EK4Q | Brand: ETEK

1. Product Overview

The ETEK EK4Q automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a PC class infrequent change-over switch designed for seamless power transition. It features a two-station design, typically used for a primary (common) power source and a secondary (backup) power source. This device is suitable for AC systems operating at 50-60Hz with a rated current ranging from 6A to 63A.

Its primary function is to automatically switch to the backup power supply when the main power fails, ensuring uninterrupted power. The switching speed is less than 50 milliseconds, effectively mitigating disruptions caused by power outages. When both primary and backup power sources are available, the ATS prioritizes the primary power source.

Key features of the ETEK EK4Q ATS include millisecond switching, quick transfer, PC level performance, low energy consumption, silver contacts for reliability, and flame-retardant material for enhanced safety.

2. Safety Precautions

Please read and understand these safety precautions before installation, operation, or maintenance of the ETEK EK4Q ATS.

  • Voltage Compatibility: A 220V ATS unit must not be used with a voltage lower than 185V. Similarly, a 110V ATS unit must not be used with a voltage lower than 90V. Operating outside these ranges may cause the internal coil to overheat and burn out.
  • Automatic Mode Restriction: The switch cannot be manually operated when it is in automatic mode. Attempting to do so may damage the internal coil.
  • 4P ATS Phase Sequence: For 4-pole (4P) ATS units, ensure the correct connection of the phase sequence. Incorrect phase sequence connection can lead to contact burnout.
  • Manual Operation Procedure: Manual operation should only be performed after all power has been completely cut off. The selector switch must be in the "MANU" (manual) position for manual operation. After manual operation is complete, return the selector switch to the "AUTO" (automatic) position.
  • Coil Protection: The control circuit coil operates normally within 85%-110% of the rated operating voltage. Low input voltage can cause the coil to overheat and burn out.

3. Installation and Setup

3.1 Mounting

The ETEK EK4Q ATS is designed for 35mm standard DIN rail installation. It can be directly installed into a household lighting distribution box or similar electrical enclosures.

  • N: Neutral Wire
  • LOAD: Load Output
  • MANU/AUTO Switch: Selector for Manual or Automatic operation.
  • Indicators: Lights to show which power source is active (Common Power Indicator, Backup Power Indicator) and closing status (Common Closing Indicator, Backup Closing Indicator).
  • Manual Operation Handle: Used for manual switching when in MANU mode.
  • AUX Terminal: External indicator can be connected to show ON/OFF status.

3.3 Wiring Diagrams

Ensure all wiring is performed by a qualified electrician and adheres to local electrical codes.

For 4P units, connect the common power supply (L1, L2, L3, N) to terminals I and the backup power supply (L1, L2, L3, N) to terminals II. The load output connects to the bottom terminals. Pay close attention to phase sequence for 4P connections.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Automatic Operation

In normal operation, set the MANU/AUTO selector switch to the "AUTO" position. The ATS will automatically monitor the primary power supply. If the primary power fails, the switch will automatically transfer the load to the backup power supply within 50 milliseconds. When the primary power is restored, the ATS will automatically switch back to the primary source.

4.2 Manual Operation

Manual operation is primarily for inspection and maintenance purposes. Before attempting any manual operation, ensure all power to the ATS unit is completely cut off.

  1. Cut off all power to the ATS unit.
  2. Move the MANU/AUTO selector switch to the "MANU" (manual) position.
  3. Use the manual operation handle to switch between power sources I and II as needed for inspection or maintenance.
  4. Once manual operations are complete, return the selector switch from the "MANU" position to the "AUTO" position.
  5. Restore power to the ATS unit.

Caution: Manual operation while the unit is energized or in "AUTO" mode can cause damage to the device and poses a safety risk.

5. Maintenance

The ETEK EK4Q ATS is designed for durability and minimal maintenance. Its shell is made of high-quality, wear-resistant, and compressive material, ensuring stability in complex and harsh environments.

Regular visual inspections are recommended to check for any signs of damage, loose connections, or overheating. Ensure the area around the ATS is clean and free from obstructions to allow for proper ventilation.

For any internal inspection or maintenance, always follow the manual operation safety guidelines outlined in Section 4.2, ensuring all power is disconnected before proceeding.

6. Troubleshooting

  • ATS Not Switching Automatically:
    • Check if the MANU/AUTO selector switch is in the "AUTO" position.
    • Verify that the control voltage for the coil is within the normal operating range (85%-110% of rated voltage). Low voltage can prevent proper operation or cause coil burnout.
    • Ensure both primary and backup power sources are correctly connected and supplying power.
  • Coil Overheating/Burnout:
    • This is often caused by operating the ATS with a voltage lower than specified (e.g., below 185V for 220V units, or below 90V for 110V units). Verify input voltage.
    • Ensure the switch is not manually operated while in "AUTO" mode.
  • 4P ATS Contacts Burnout:
    • This indicates an incorrect phase sequence connection. Review the wiring diagram (Figure 5) and ensure phases are correctly matched.
  • Excessive Silver Alloy Loss During Manual Operation:
    • This can occur if manual switching is performed too quickly or forcefully, or if done while the unit is energized. Always ensure power is cut off and operate the handle smoothly.

8. User Tips

  • Understanding Power Source Designations:
    • C to G: Refers to switching between City Power (Common) and a Generator (Backup).
    • C to C: Refers to switching between two City Power sources (e.g., two different utility feeds).
    • C to PV: Refers to switching between City Power (Common) and Photovoltaic (Solar) Energy (Backup), often involving a battery-powered inverter. If your primary source is city power and your secondary is a battery-powered inverter, the 'C to PV' model is the appropriate choice.
  • Voltage Stability: Always ensure your power sources provide stable voltage within the specified operating range to prevent damage to the ATS coil.
  • Manual Override: Remember that the manual override function is strictly for maintenance and troubleshooting when the power is off. Do not attempt to use it as a regular switching mechanism.
