1. Introduction

The Winpal WP300A is a versatile thermal barcode label printer designed for both direct thermal and thermal transfer printing. 2. Safety Information

  • Open Button: Releases the top cover to access internal components.
  • Print Head: The component responsible for transferring ink (thermal transfer) or heat (direct thermal) to the label.
  • Ribbon: Used in thermal transfer printing.
  • Media Guide: Guides the label media through the printer.
  • Gap Sensor: Detects gaps between labels for accurate printing.
  • Platen Roller: Feeds the media through the printer.
  • Feed Button: Advances the label media.
  • Status Indicator: Displays the printer's current status.
  • Ribbon Rewind Hub: Rewinds used ribbon.
  • Media: The label roll or fan-fold labels.
  • Media Bar: Helps secure the media roll.
  • Black Mark Sensor: Detects black marks on media for specific label types.

5. Setup Instructions

5.1. Connecting the Printer

  1. Connect the power adapter to the printer's Power Supply port.
  2. Plug the power cable into a suitable electrical outlet.
  3. Connect the USB cable from the printer's USB port to your computer.
  4. If using optional interfaces (Serial, LAN, Wireless, WiFi), connect them as required.
  5. Press the Switch button to power on the printer.

5.2. Loading Label Media

The WP300A supports various media types including continuous, gap, black mark, fan-fold, and punched hole labels with a maximum width of 108 mm (4.25").

  1. Press the Open button to lift the top cover of the printer.
  2. Place the label roll onto the media bar, ensuring the labels feed from the bottom of the roll.
  3. Adjust the media guides to fit the width of your labels snugly, but without restricting movement.
  4. Feed the leading edge of the labels under the print head and platen roller, ensuring it exits the front of the printer.
  5. Close the top cover until it latches securely.

5.3. Loading Thermal Transfer Ribbon (for Thermal Transfer Printing)

If you are performing thermal transfer printing, you will need to load a ribbon. The printer supports ribbons with a maximum capacity of 300m.

  1. Open the top cover of the printer.
  2. Install the ribbon onto the ribbon supply spindle and the empty core onto the ribbon rewind hub.
  3. Thread the ribbon through the print mechanism as indicated by the internal diagrams (refer to Figure 4.1). Ensure the ribbon is taut and aligned.
  4. Close the top cover.

5.4. Driver and Software Installation

The printer comes with a CD containing drivers and labeling software. You can also download the latest drivers from the Winpal website.

  1. Insert the provided CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive, or download the drivers from the official Winpal website.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer drivers for your operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac).
  3. Install the bundled labeling software if desired. This software allows you to design and print labels.
  4. After installation, verify that the printer is recognized by your computer and appears in your list of devices.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Printing Modes

The WP300A supports two printing modes:

  • Direct Thermal Printing: Uses heat-sensitive paper that darkens when heated by the print head. No ribbon is required. Ideal for short-term labels like shipping labels.
  • Thermal Transfer Printing: Uses a ribbon that transfers ink to the label media when heated. Produces durable, long-lasting labels resistant to fading and smudging. Suitable for product labels, asset tags, etc.

6.2. Basic Printing Steps

  1. Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to your computer.
  2. Load the appropriate label media and, if necessary, the thermal transfer ribbon.
  3. Open your labeling software or application (e.g., the bundled software, or a program like Word or Excel with label templates).
  4. Select the Winpal WP300A as your printer.
  5. Configure the label size and type settings in your software to match the media loaded in the printer.
  6. Send the print job to the printer.
  7. The printer will begin printing at a speed of up to 127 mm (5") per second.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Cleaning the Print Head

Regular cleaning of the print head ensures optimal print quality and extends the life of your printer. It is recommended to clean the print head after every few rolls of labels or if print quality degrades.

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Allow the print head to cool down if the printer has been recently used.
  4. Gently wipe the print head surface with a lint-free cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Do not use water or abrasive cleaners.
  5. Allow the print head to dry completely before closing the cover and reconnecting power.

7.2. Ribbon Replacement

When the thermal transfer ribbon runs out, replace it with a new one following the loading instructions in Section 5.3.

8. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
