1. Introduction

The Bafang DPC18 UART Display is an intelligent display controller designed for electric power-assisted bicycles. It provides riders with essential real-time information and control over their ebike's mid-drive motor system. Featuring a durable PC casing and a high-hardness glass LCD window, this display is built for reliability and ease of use.

3. Compatibility

This display is designed to work exclusively with BAFANG mid-drive motors, including BBS01, BBS02, and BBSHD. It is not compatible with other motor brands or types. Ensure your motor uses the UART communication protocol.

5. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install your Bafang DPC18 UART Display:

  1. Mount the Display: Choose a suitable position on your handlebar. The display is compatible with handlebar diameters of Φ22.2mm, Φ25.4mm, and Φ31.8mm. Open the left and right clamps of the display and place them in the correct position on the handlebar.

  3. Adjust and Secure: Adjust the display angle for optimal visibility while riding. Once the angle is set, use an M2.5 hex wrench to tighten the M3*12 hex socket cap screws to a torque of 1 N.m.

  5. Mount the Keypad: Open the auxiliary switch clamp and place it in a convenient operating position on the handlebar. Adjust its angle for easy access.
  6. Connect Cables: Align the display connector with the EB-BUS connector according to the markings and connect them. Ensure the system is powered off before connecting or disconnecting any cables.

6. Operating Instructions

The DPC18 display features five buttons: '+', '-', 'i' (Information/Enter), Light, and Power. These buttons allow you to navigate menus and adjust settings.

6.1. Basic Operations

  • Power On/Off: Long press the Power button (>) for more than 2 seconds to turn the display on or off. If a password is set, you will need to enter it to access the main interface.
  • Auto-Off: The display will automatically turn off after 5 minutes of inactivity (configurable in settings).
  • PAS Level Selection: In manual shift mode, short press the '+' or '-' buttons to change the pedal assist level. The display supports 0-3, 0-5, or 0-9 PAS levels, with a default maximum of 5.
  • Video: Demonstrating how to set PAS levels (0-3, 0-5, 0-9) on the DPC18 display.
  • Mileage and Speed Mode Switching: Short press the 'i' button to cycle through different display modes: Trip Distance (TRIP), Total Distance (ODO), Maximum Speed (MAX), Average Speed (AVG), Remaining Range (RANGE), Calories (CALORIES), and Time (TIME).
  • Headlight/Backlight Control: Long press the Light button (>) for more than 2 seconds to turn the backlight and headlight on or off. The backlight brightness can be adjusted to 5 levels (10%-100%).
  • Walk Assist Mode: Long press the '-' button (>) for more than 2 seconds to activate walk assist mode. The display will show a walk assist icon. Release the button to exit this mode.
  • ECO/SPORT Mode: Long press the 'i' button (>) for more than 2 seconds to switch between ECO and SPORT riding modes.

6.2. User Settings Menu

To enter the settings menu, double-tap the 'i' button. The menu includes "Display Setting", "Information", and "EXIT". Use the '+' and '-' buttons to navigate and 'i' to select.

Display Setting Options:

  • Unit: Switch between Metric (km/h) and Imperial (mph) units.
  • Brightness: Adjust backlight brightness (10%, 30%, 50%, 75%, 100%).
  • Auto Off: Set the automatic shutdown time (OFF, 1-9 minutes).
  • Default Mode: Set the default riding mode (ECO/SPORT) upon startup.
  • Power View: Choose to display output as Power (W) or Current (A).
  • SOC View: Choose to display battery level as Percentage or Voltage.
  • TRIP Reset: Reset trip data (Yes/No).
  • Wheel: Set wheel diameter (6-34 inches).
  • Speed Limit: Adjust the maximum speed limit (10-60).
  • AL Sensitivity: Adjust ambient light sensor sensitivity (0-5, OFF).
  • Password: Enable/disable and set/change a startup password.
  • Set Clock: Set the current time (24-hour format).

Information Menu:

This menu provides read-only information about the display and battery status.

  • Battery Info: Displays detailed battery information such as temperature, total voltage, current, remaining capacity, full capacity, relative charge state, absolute charge state, cycle times, max uncharge time, last uncharge time, total cell count, and individual cell voltages.
  • Error Code: Shows a record of the last 10 error messages.

7. User Tips

  • Avoid Hot Plugging: Always ensure the ebike system is powered off before connecting or disconnecting the display or any related cables to prevent damage.
  • Parameter Reset: If the display becomes unresponsive, avoid attempting to reset internal parameters without consulting the official user manual or support.
  • Speed Limit Adjustment: The speed limit can be adjusted through the 'Display Setting' menu to comply with local regulations or personal preference.
  • PAS Level Customization: The display allows customization of the maximum pedal assist levels (0-3, 0-5, or 0-9) to suit different riding styles and terrains.

8. Troubleshooting and Error Codes

The DPC18 UART display can alert you to system malfunctions by displaying a wrench icon and an error code. Refer to the table below for common error codes and their corresponding solutions.

9. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly wipe the display screen and casing with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the screen or housing.
  • Connection Check: Periodically inspect all cable connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion or damage.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the ebike and display in a dry, temperate environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Software Updates: Check with Bafang or your dealer for any available firmware updates for the display to ensure optimal performance and new features.

10. Warranty and Support

Suzhou Bafang Electric Motor Science-Technology Co.LTD (referred to as “Bafang motor”) guarantees its products under the following conditions:

10.1. Warranty Period and Scope

The warranty period for this product is 30 months from the production date of the motor. During this period, if any quality issues arise due to material or manufacturing defects, Bafang will provide free repair or replacement services.

10.2. Conditions that Void Warranty

The warranty will be voided if the product is damaged under any of the following circumstances:

  • Damage caused by refitting, neglect, improper maintenance, use for competition or commercial purposes, misuse, abuse, or traffic accidents.
  • Damage occurring during customer transportation.
  • Damage resulting from unreasonable installation, debugging, or repair.
  • Damage not caused by material or technological reasons, such as damage due to improper user methods.
  • Product appearance and surface changes that do not impact the product's function.
  • Damage caused by installation or repair performed by unauthorized personnel or at unapproved service points.

10.3. Support

If your Bafang product requires maintenance or support, especially if it is fixed on a complete e-bike, please directly contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer for assistance. They will coordinate with Bafang's after-sales service department. You may need to provide your purchase order batch number and product serial number.
