1. Introduction

4. Product Overview

Familiarize yourself with the components and controls of your SL-1256DOS Noise Dose Meter.

  1. Microphone: 1/2-inch electret condenser microphone for sound detection.
  2. Display Panel: Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) showing measurement data and menu options.
  3. POWER/MENU Key:
    • Press to turn the meter on.
    • Press for 3 seconds to turn the meter off.
    • Changes operating mode.
    • Press to cycle through Sound Level Meter mode (SLM), Measure, Store and Recall Data mode (DATA), Dose setup mode (SET UP), and Selecting and Changing Options mode (OPTION).
    • In data recording mode (DATA REC), press MENU key then press key immediately to exit this mode.
  4. LEFT Key: Select active options from the current menu.
  5. DOWN Key: Select active options from the current menu.
  6. UP Key: Select active options from the current menu.
  7. RIGHT Key: Select active options from the current menu.
  8. RUN/PAUSE/ENTER Key: Initiates, pauses, or confirms operations.
  9. USB Interface: For connecting to a PC for data transfer.
  10. Battery Compartment: Houses 4x1.5V AAA Size (UM-4) batteries.
  11. Microphone Input Jack: Connects the external microphone probe.

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device (refer to Figure 3).
  2. Use the provided screwdriver to open the battery compartment.
  3. Insert four 1.5V AAA (UM-4) batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

5.2 Microphone Connection

  1. Connect the external microphone probe cable into the microphone input jack on the top of the main unit (refer to Figure 4).
  2. Ensure the connection is secure.

5.3 Initial Power On and Stabilization

After connecting the microphone and installing batteries, press the POWER key to turn on the device. Allow approximately 10 seconds for the meter to stabilize before taking measurements.

6. Operation

6.1 Power On/Off

  • To Power On: Press the POWER key (labeled '3' in Figure 2).
  • To Power Off: Press and hold the POWER key for approximately 3 seconds.

6.2 Menu Navigation and Mode Selection

Use the MENU key (labeled '3' in Figure 2) to cycle through the main operating modes:

  • Sound Level Meter (SLM) Mode: For real-time sound level measurements.
  • Measure, Store and Recall Data (DATA) Mode: To manage stored measurement results.
  • Dose Setup (SET UP) Mode: To configure dose measurement parameters.
  • Selecting and Changing Options (OPTION) Mode: To adjust various device settings.

Use the UP, DOWN, LEFT, and RIGHT arrow keys (labeled '4', '5', '6', '7' in Figure 2) to navigate within menus and select active options. The RUN/PAUSE/ENTER key (labeled '8' in Figure 2) is used to start/pause measurements or confirm selections.

6.3 Keypad Lock

To prevent accidental operation, the keypad can be locked:

  • To Lock: Press the UP and RIGHT arrow keys simultaneously.
  • To Unlock: Press the LEFT and DOWN arrow keys simultaneously.

6.4 Measurement Control and Timers

  • Measurement Duration: Can be set from 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes, or 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 12, or 24 hours.
  • Timers: Up to 16 timers can be set for automatic start and stop of measurements, up to one month in advance. Timers can be configured via the PC software or directly on the meter keypad.

6.5 Data Logging

The device supports logging of all measurement parameter values.

  • Logging Period (LP): Selectable intervals include 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, 15s, 20s, 30s, 1min, 2min, 5min, 10min, 15min, 20min, 30min, or 60min.
  • Logging Capacity: Up to 120,000 values can be stored at any one time.

6.6 Data Output

The SL-1256DOS features a USB interface for connecting to a PC. This allows for downloading stored measurement results and configuring advanced settings using the dedicated PC software (if purchased).

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Wipe the device and microphone with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the device or affect its accuracy.

7.2 Storage

When not in use, store the SL-1256DOS in its carrying case (Figure 1) in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid areas with high humidity or dust.

7.3 Battery Care

If the device will not be used for an extended period (e.g., more than one month), remove the batteries to prevent leakage and potential damage to the device. The battery indicator on the display will flash when the voltage is insufficient for operation, indicating that batteries need replacement.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SL-1256DOS, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Device does not power on:
    • Check if batteries are installed correctly with the right polarity.
    • Replace old or depleted batteries with new ones.
  • Inaccurate or no readings:
    • Ensure the external microphone probe is securely connected to the main unit.
    • Check that the microphone is not obstructed or damaged.
    • Verify that the device has completed its 10-second stabilization time after power-on.
    • Consider performing a calibration if readings are consistently off (refer to the full operation manual for calibration procedures, if applicable).
  • Problems with data transfer to PC:
    • Ensure the USB cable is properly connected to both the device and the PC.
    • Verify that the PC software (if applicable) is correctly installed and running.
    • Check for any driver issues on your PC.
  • Keypad unresponsive:
    • Check if the keypad lock is activated. Unlock it by pressing the LEFT and DOWN arrow keys simultaneously.
