2. Understanding Measurements

  • pH: Measures the acidity or alkalinity of water. PH measurement range and a chart of common substances with their pH values (Acidic, Neutral, Alkaline).

Figure 9: pH scale and common examples.

  • EC (Electrical Conductivity): Indicates the concentration of dissolved ions in water. Higher EC generally means more dissolved solids. EC measurement ranges and its relation to water quality and health.

Figure 10: EC measurement and water quality.

  • ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential): Reflects the water's ability to oxidize contaminants. Higher ORP values indicate greater oxidizing power. ORP measurement range and application table (Aquaculture, Cooling Towers, Swimming pools, Hot tubs, Water Disinfection).

Maintenance

1. Electrode Care

  • Always keep the electrode clean.
  • After each use, wash the electrode with distilled water or purified water.
  • Avoid colliding or rubbing the electrodes during use to prevent damage.
  • Ensure the electrode protection cover is replaced when not in use to keep the probe moist and protected.

2. Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace all four LR44 1.5V button batteries simultaneously to ensure optimal performance.

3. Electrode Replacement

The electrode head is replaceable. If the electrode becomes damaged or its performance degrades significantly despite proper cleaning and calibration, it can be unscrewed and replaced with a new one. This allows for extended product lifespan.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Inaccurate Readings Dirty electrode; Out of calibration; Expired calibration solutions. Clean the electrode thoroughly; Recalibrate the tester using fresh calibration solutions.
Display Not Working / No Power Dead batteries; Incorrect battery installation. Replace batteries with new LR44 cells; Check battery polarity.
Slow or Unstable Readings Dirty electrode; Low battery; Electrode aging. Clean electrode; Replace batteries; If problem persists, consider replacing the electrode.
Cannot Calibrate Incorrect calibration solution; Dirty electrode; Damaged electrode. Ensure correct and fresh calibration solutions are used; Clean electrode; If still unable to calibrate, the electrode may need replacement.

User Tips

  • Regular Calibration: Calibrate the tester regularly, especially if you notice inconsistent readings or after a period of heavy use, to maintain accuracy.
  • Proper Storage: Always store the electrode with its protective cap on, ideally with a few drops of storage solution or distilled water to keep it moist.
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination: Rinse the electrode thoroughly between different samples to prevent cross-contamination and ensure accurate results.
  • Battery Life: Keep spare LR44 batteries on hand, as they are essential for the device's operation.
  • Temperature Impact: While the device has ATC, extreme temperature differences between the sample and the device can still affect initial readings. Allow the device to acclimate if possible.
