1. Introduction

The SUGON 8650 is a powerful and intelligent 1300W hot air rework station designed for precise BGA and PCB chip repair. Featuring a digital display and three distinct operating modes, it offers versatility and control for both novice and experienced technicians. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your rework station.

2. Safety Instructions

Please read and understand all safety instructions before operating the SUGON 8650 rework station. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Always operate the unit in a well-ventilated area.
  • Do not touch the hot air gun nozzle or heated components directly. They can reach very high temperatures.
  • Ensure the unit is properly grounded to prevent electric shock.
  • Keep flammable materials away from the work area.
  • Do not use the unit near water or in damp conditions.
  • Unplug the unit from the power source before cleaning or performing maintenance.

5. Setup

5.1 Initial Placement

Place the SUGON 8650 unit on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure adequate clearance around the unit for ventilation. The top of the machine features a groove designed to securely hold other hot air or soldering stations, preventing them from falling.

The top of the machine has a groove designed to securely hold other hot air or soldering stations. The side features a high-temperature-resistant silicone storage bar for five air gun nozzles.

5.2 Handle Bracket Installation

The handle bracket can be configured in two modes:

  • Dual Air Gun Station Mode: Supports the placement and dormancy of two air gun handles simultaneously, with storage for three quick-plug air gun nozzles.
  • Multi-Air Gun Nozzle Bracket Mode: Supports a single air gun handle and dormancy, with storage for seven quick-plug air gun nozzles.

Attach the air gun holder to the side of the main unit as desired.

The handle bracket can be configured for dual air gun use with three nozzles or single air gun use with seven nozzles.

5.3 Nozzle Attachment

Select the appropriate nozzle for your task. The air outlet of the handle adopts an integrated design for direct and spiral wind. The station is equipped with a high-power fan, providing large and soft air volume.

A variety of straight (5mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm) and curved (5mm, 8mm, 10mm) nozzles are provided for different applications.

6. Operation

6.1 Control Panel Overview

6.2 Power On/Off

Press the Power button (8) to turn the unit on or off.

6.3 Selecting Operating Modes

The SUGON 8650 offers three distinct heating modes. Use the Mode switch button (9) to cycle through them:

  • Gentle Mode: Slow and very precise heating, ideal for novices or delicate components requiring fine temperature control.
  • General Mode: Faster heating with maintained accuracy, suitable for general maintenance tasks by experienced users.
  • Rapid Mode: Quick temperature rise, best for experienced technicians needing fast heat application.

6.4 Temperature and Air Volume Adjustment

  • Use the Temperature adjustment buttons (2) to increase or decrease the temperature in 10°C increments.
  • Use the Wind speed adjustment buttons (3) to increase or decrease the air volume in 5L/min increments.

6.5 Memory Storage Channels

The unit has four memory storage channels (CH1-CH4). You can set and store independent temperature and air volume settings for each channel. Use the Memory storage channel buttons (1) to select a stored channel. When a channel is active, a horizontal bar will appear above its corresponding button on the display.

6.6 Cold Air / Hot Air Conversion

The hot air gun handle features a Hot and cold air switch button (4). Short press this button to switch between hot and cold air output. This function is useful for cooling components after rework. Long press the button to set the wind speed of the cold wind.

The linear handle allows temperature control and locking. Four buttons correspond to memory storage for temperature and wind speed, enabling quick switching. A short press switches between cold/hot air, and a long press locks the button.

6.7 Button Lock

Long press any of the four buttons on the handle to enter the button lock mode, preventing accidental changes to settings.

6.8 Other Functions

  • Temperature Calibration: The unit supports temperature calibration for accuracy. Refer to the detailed instructions in the included 6-language brochure for the calibration procedure.
  • °C/°F Switching: Use the °C/°F toggle button (6) to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature displays.
  • Buzzer Switch: The Buzzer switch button (7) allows you to enable or disable audible alerts.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Automatic Cooling Function

The system is equipped with an automatic large air volume cooling function. This feature activates after use to prolong the life of the heating element and protect the hot air handle. Allow the unit to complete its cooling cycle before unplugging or storing.

7.2 Heating Element Replacement

The hot air gun handle features a pluggable heating element for easy replacement. When the heating element needs to be replaced, ensure the unit is powered off and cooled down. Carefully detach the handle and replace the element as shown in Figure 9. The unit utilizes a new 7B heating element, with an optional 11A heating element offering a larger heating area and direct heat for enhanced performance.

The 7B heating element combines spiral and straight wind for improved thermal efficiency. The 11A heating element, an enlarged version of 7B, offers a larger heating area and direct heat for enhanced performance.

7.3 Cleaning

Regularly clean the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Ensure no dust or debris accumulates in the air vents. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.

  • For delicate components, start with Gentle mode and gradually increase temperature/air volume as needed.
  • Utilize the memory channels to quickly switch between frequently used settings for different types of rework tasks.
  • The cold air function is excellent for rapidly cooling down components after soldering, preventing damage from prolonged heat exposure.
  • Keep a variety of nozzles handy to match the size of the component you are working on for optimal heat distribution.
  • Always ensure the hot air gun is placed in its holder when not in active use to prevent accidental burns and activate the automatic sleep function.
