The POROMETISTO-SL01 requires 3x 1.5V AAA batteries (not included). To install the batteries:

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Use the provided screwdriver to open the battery compartment.
  3. Insert three 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -).
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

Note: If the device will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage.

7. Operation

7.1 Power On/Off

  • Press the Power key (Power button icon) to turn the device on.
  • Press and hold the Power key to turn the device off.
  • The device will automatically shut down after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity.

7.2 A/C Weighting Selection

Press the A/C key to switch between A-weighting and C-weighting modes.

  • A-Weighting (dBA): This mode mimics the human ear's response to sound, making it suitable for general environmental noise measurements and assessing potential hearing damage.

7.5 Data Hold Function

To freeze the current reading on the display:

  • Press the HOLD key / MAX key once. The 'HOLD' indicator will appear on the screen.
  • Press the key again to release the data hold and resume real-time measurement.

7.6 dB/SONE Unit Conversion

Press the dB/SONE key to switch between decibel (dB) and sone units.

  • dB (Decibel): Measures the size and intensity of noise.
  • SONE: Represents the loudness of noise as perceived by the human ear, commonly used in music, audio, and acoustic measurements.

9. Understanding Noise Levels

To help interpret your measurements, here are some common sound levels:

Examples of typical noise levels in different environments
Figure 14: Typical noise levels in various environments.
  • Quiet: 30-40 dB (e.g., a quiet bedroom)
  • Offices: 50-60 dB (e.g., a typical office environment)
  • Highway: 70-80 dB (e.g., inside a car on a highway)
  • Pubs: 90-100 dB (e.g., a noisy bar)
  • Factory: 100-130 dB (e.g., heavy machinery in operation)

10. Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will ensure the longevity and accuracy of your sound level meter:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure the windproof ball is on the microphone to protect it.
  • Battery Care: Remove batteries if the device is not used for extended periods to prevent corrosion.
  • Avoid Impact: While durable, avoid dropping or subjecting the device to strong impacts to maintain its accuracy.

11. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your POROMETISTO-SL01, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Device does not power on:
    • Check if the batteries are installed correctly with the right polarity.
    • Ensure the batteries have sufficient charge; replace them if necessary.
  • Inaccurate readings:
    • Ensure the microphone is clean and unobstructed.
    • Verify that the windproof ball is properly placed to minimize wind interference.
    • Check if the correct A/C weighting and Fast/Slow response modes are selected for your measurement environment.
    • Avoid measuring in extremely noisy or quiet environments that are outside the device's specified range.
  • Display is blank or frozen:
    • If the display is frozen, check if the Data Hold function is active. Press the HOLD key to release it.
    • If the display is blank, try replacing the batteries.

12. User Tips

  • Always use the included windproof ball over the microphone, especially when measuring outdoors or in drafty conditions, to prevent inaccurate readings from wind noise.
  • For consistent measurements, try to maintain the same distance and angle between the meter's microphone and the sound source.
  • When measuring fluctuating noise, use the 'FAST' response mode to capture peaks, and 'SLOW' for a more stable average.
  • Regularly check battery levels to ensure uninterrupted operation and accurate measurements.
