5. Setup Guide
Follow these steps to set up your BOMGE M12 audio interface:
- Connect to Computer: Connect the BOMGE M12 to an available USB port on your computer using the provided USB Type-C cable. The 'POWER' indicator on the M12 should light up. Your computer should automatically recognize the device as a USB audio interface.
- Install Drivers (if applicable): The M12 is designed for plug-and-play operation. However, for optimal performance or if you encounter issues, visit the BOMGE official website to check for and download any specific drivers or software for your operating system.
- Connect Microphones/Instruments:
- Condenser Microphones: Connect your condenser microphone to INPUT 1 or INPUT 2 using an XLR cable. Press the 'MIC CONDENSER' button to activate +48V phantom power. The 'PHANTOM' indicator will light up.
- Dynamic Microphones/Line-Level Devices: Connect your dynamic microphone or line-level instrument (e.g., keyboard, mixer output) to INPUT 1 or INPUT 2 using an XLR or 6.35mm TRS cable. Ensure the 'MIC CONDENSER' button is NOT pressed.
- High-Impedance Instruments (e.g., Guitar): Connect your electric guitar or bass to INPUT 1 or INPUT 2 using a 6.35mm TS cable. Press the 'Hi/Z' button for proper impedance matching.
- Connect Output Devices:
- Studio Monitors: Connect your active studio monitors to the 'LINE OUTPUT' (OUT-1/L, OUT-2/R) jacks using 6.35mm TRS cables.
- Headphones: Plug your headphones into the 'PHONES' 3.5mm stereo jack.
- Initial Level Setting: Before playing any audio, ensure all level knobs (1/L LEVEL, 2/R LEVEL, MAIN, PHONES) are turned down to their minimum position. This prevents sudden loud sounds that could damage your hearing or equipment.

6. Operating Instructions
Once your M12 is set up, follow these guidelines for operation:
- Adjusting Input Levels:
- Speak into your microphone or play your instrument at the desired performance level.
- Slowly turn up the '1/L LEVEL' or '2/R LEVEL' knob for the corresponding input channel.
- Observe the level meters. Aim for the signal to peak in the green or yellow range. Avoid the red segment, which indicates clipping and distortion.
- Monitoring Your Audio:
- Direct Monitor: Press the 'DIRECT MONITOR' button to hear your input signal directly from the M12 with zero latency. This is crucial for recording without delay.
- Headphone Volume: Adjust the 'PHONES' knob to control the listening volume through your headphones.
- Stereo/Mono Monitoring: Use the 'ST MON' button to switch between stereo and mono output for monitoring. When the button is pressed, the output is mono. When released (pop-up state), the output is stereo.

Figure 6.2: Explanation of Mono and Stereo output selection. - Selecting Recording Mode:
- Press the 'REC' button to toggle between recording modes:
- MIC: Only the audio from your connected microphones/instruments will be sent to your computer for recording.
- MIC+PC: Both the audio from your microphones/instruments AND the audio playing from your computer will be sent for recording. This is useful for recording vocals over a backing track playing from your computer.

7. User Tips
- Always start with all volume knobs at their minimum position before connecting or disconnecting devices to prevent sudden loud noises.
- Utilize the 'DIRECT MONITOR' feature to eliminate latency during recording, allowing you to hear your performance in real-time.
- Pay close attention to the level indicators. Consistent peaking into the red will result in distorted audio. Adjust input gain accordingly.
- For optimal sound quality, ensure your recording software (DAW) is set to use the BOMGE M12 as both the input and output device.
- When using condenser microphones, remember to activate the +48V phantom power. Turn it off when not in use or when using dynamic microphones.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter any issues with your BOMGE M12, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound output from monitors/headphones. | Incorrect connections, low volume, incorrect computer settings. | Check all cable connections. Ensure 'MAIN' and 'PHONES' knobs are turned up. Verify the M12 is selected as the output device in your computer's sound settings and recording software. |
| No input signal detected. | Incorrect input connection, phantom power off, Hi/Z not engaged, low input gain. | Ensure microphone/instrument is correctly connected. Activate 'MIC CONDENSER' for condenser mics. Engage 'Hi/Z' for high-impedance instruments. Increase '1/L LEVEL' or '2/R LEVEL' knobs. Verify M12 is selected as the input device in your recording software. |
| Distorted or crackling sound. | Input signal too hot (clipping), faulty cable, incorrect sample rate. | Reduce input gain ('1/L LEVEL', '2/R LEVEL') until level meters stay out of the red. Try a different cable. Ensure the sample rate in your software matches the M12's 48kHz. |
| Latency (delay) during recording. | Direct monitoring not engaged, high buffer size in software. | Press the 'DIRECT MONITOR' button. Reduce the buffer size setting in your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software. |
| Device not recognized by computer. | Faulty USB cable/port, driver issue. | Try a different USB port or cable. Restart your computer. Check the manufacturer's website for updated drivers. |
