4. Installation
Careful installation is crucial for the proper functioning and longevity of your FPV system. Follow these steps:
4.1. Physical Mounting
- Mount the 4in1 ESC to your drone frame using the provided M3 screws and silicone grommets. Ensure the orientation is correct as per your frame design and desired FC orientation.
- Carefully stack the F405 Flight Controller on top of the 4in1 ESC, aligning the mounting holes. Use the remaining silicone grommets and screws to secure it. The stack uses a 30.5x30.5mm mounting pattern.
- Ensure there is no shorting between the boards and the carbon fiber frame.
4.2. Wiring Connections
Refer to the wiring diagram below for connecting various peripherals to your F405 Flight Controller. Pay close attention to polarity and pin assignments.
- Power Input (BAT): Connect the XT60 connector to the main battery pads on the ESC. Ensure the included 1000uF capacitor is soldered across the main battery pads for filtering.
- Motors (M1-M8): The 4in1 ESC provides direct connections for motors. Ensure correct motor order and rotation direction during configuration.
- Receiver (ELRS/TBS/SBUS): Connect your receiver's signal output to the appropriate UART RX pad (e.g., RX6 for SBUS, or specific TX/RX for ELRS/TBS). Provide 5V power and GND.
- Video Transmitter (VTX): Connect VTX video input to the VTX pad on the FC, and VTX SmartAudio/TrampHV to a free UART TX pad. Provide power (VBAT or 10V/5V BEC) and GND.
- Camera: Connect camera video output to the CAM pad on the FC. Provide 5V power and GND.
- GPS: Connect GPS TX/RX to a free UART RX/TX pair on the FC. Provide 5V power and GND.
- Buzzer (BUZ): Connect the buzzer to the dedicated BUZ pads.
- LED Strip (LED): Connect LED strips to the LED pad for programmable lighting.
WARNING: Double-check all connections for correct polarity and solder joints before applying power to prevent damage to components.
5. Configuration
The SoloGood F405 Flight Controller uses Betaflight firmware. You will need the Betaflight Configurator software installed on your computer to configure the FC. The ESC uses BLHELI_S firmware, which can be configured via Betaflight Passthrough or BLHeliSuite32.
5.1. Betaflight Setup
- Install Betaflight Configurator: Download and install the latest version of Betaflight Configurator from the official Betaflight GitHub page.
- Connect FC: Connect your F405 FC to your computer using a USB-C cable.
- Flash Firmware: If necessary, flash the latest Betaflight firmware for the SOLOGOODF405 target. Ensure you backup your current configuration before flashing.
- Initial Setup: Follow the setup wizard in Betaflight Configurator.
- Port Configuration: Configure UARTs for your receiver, VTX, GPS, etc., in the 'Ports' tab.
- Configuration Tab: Set up ESC/Motor protocols (DSHOT600 recommended), accelerometer trim, and other basic settings.
- Receiver Tab: Verify receiver input and channel mapping.
- Modes Tab: Set up flight modes (Arm, Angle, Acro, etc.) to your switches.
- Motors Tab: Test motor direction (REMOVE PROPELLERS FIRST!) and reverse if necessary.
- OSD Tab: Customize your On-Screen Display elements.
5.2. ESC Configuration
The BLHELI_S 55A 4in1 ESC comes pre-flashed with J-H-30-16.7 firmware. You can update or configure ESC settings via Betaflight Passthrough in the Motors tab or by using BLHeliSuite32 software. Ensure all ESCs are detected and configured identically.
6. Operating Instructions
Once your FPV drone is fully assembled and configured:
- Pre-Flight Check: Always perform a visual inspection of your drone. Check for loose wires, secure components, and propeller integrity.
- Battery Connection: Connect a fully charged 3-6S LiPo battery to the XT60 connector. The FC will power up, indicated by LED lights.
- Arming: Arm your drone using the designated switch on your remote controller, as configured in Betaflight. Ensure you are in a safe, open area with no obstacles or people nearby.
- Flight: Operate your drone responsibly. Start with gentle maneuvers if you are new to FPV.
- Disarming: Disarm your drone immediately after landing or in case of an emergency.
- Battery Disconnection: Disconnect the battery after each flight session.
SAFETY NOTE: Always remove propellers when connecting to Betaflight or performing any maintenance to prevent accidental injury.
7. Maintenance
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the FC and ESC for any signs of physical damage, loose connections, or burnt components.
- Cleaning: Keep the boards clean from dust, dirt, and debris. Use compressed air or a soft brush. Avoid using liquids directly on the electronics.
- Firmware Updates: Keep your Betaflight FC and BLHELI_S ESC firmware updated to benefit from new features, bug fixes, and improved performance.
- Solder Joints: Check solder joints for cracks or cold joints, especially after hard crashes. Re-solder if necessary.
8. Troubleshooting
- FC Not Connecting to Betaflight: Ensure correct USB cable, drivers are installed (STM32 Virtual COM Port Driver, Zadig for DFU mode), and try different USB ports.
- Motors Not Spinning: Check motor wiring, ESC calibration, and Betaflight motor output settings. Ensure the drone is armed.
- No Video Feed: Verify camera and VTX connections, power to VTX/camera, and OSD settings in Betaflight.
- Drone Drifting/Unstable: Check gyroscope calibration in Betaflight, ensure FC is mounted securely and free from vibrations. Verify propeller balance and integrity.
- LED Indicators: Refer to the LED status descriptions in the specifications section to diagnose basic power or gyroscope issues.
9. User Tips
- Conformal Coating: For increased durability and protection against moisture and dust, consider applying a conformal coating to your FC and ESC.
- PID Tuning: While default Betaflight PIDs are often good, fine-tuning PIDs can significantly improve flight performance. Research and experiment with PID tuning for your specific drone setup.
- Battery Voltage Monitoring: Utilize the OSD to monitor your battery voltage during flight to avoid over-discharging your LiPo batteries.
- Community Resources: The FPV community is vast. Online forums, YouTube tutorials, and dedicated groups can be excellent resources for advanced setup, troubleshooting, and tips.
