2. Safety Information
Always adhere to safety precautions when using the multimeter to prevent electric shock or damage to the instrument. Read all safety information before use.
General Safety Guidelines:
- Do not use the meter if it appears damaged or if the test leads are damaged.
- Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the meter, between terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
- Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Always disconnect power to the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors before testing resistance or capacitance.
- Ensure the correct function and range are selected before making measurements.
- Do not operate the meter around explosive gas, vapor, or dust.
- The meter is rated for CAT III 600V and CAT II 1000V. Ensure your application falls within these safety categories.

5. Setup
5.1. Battery Installation
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the multimeter (refer to Image 5).
- Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert two (2) AA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
5.2. Connecting Test Leads
- Insert the black test lead into the 'COM' (common) input jack.
- Insert the red test lead into the appropriate input jack for your measurement:
- For Voltage (V), Resistance (Ω), Capacitance (nF/µF), Diode, or LED Test, insert the red lead into the 'VΩ' jack.
- For Current (mA/µA), insert the red lead into the 'mAµA' jack.
- For High Current (10A), insert the red lead into the '10A' jack.
6. Operating Instructions
The FLUKE 18B+ operates in Manual Range mode. Select the desired function using the rotary dial.
6.1. Measuring AC/DC Voltage (V)
- Turn the rotary dial to the 'V~' (AC Voltage) or 'V-' (DC Voltage) position.
- Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component you wish to measure.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
6.2. Measuring Resistance (Ω)
- Turn the rotary dial to the 'Ω' (Resistance) position.
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged.
- Connect the test leads across the component to measure its resistance.
- Read the resistance value on the display.
6.3. Measuring AC/DC Current (A)
- Turn the rotary dial to the 'A~' (AC Current) or 'A-' (DC Current) position, selecting the appropriate range (mA/µA or 10A).
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
- Connect the multimeter in series with the circuit.
- Apply power to the circuit.
- Read the current value on the display.
6.4. Measuring Capacitance (nF/µF)
- Turn the rotary dial to the 'nF' (Capacitance) position.
- Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before connecting the test leads.
- Connect the test leads across the capacitor.
- Read the capacitance value on the display.
6.5. LED Test
- Turn the rotary dial to the 'LED TEST' position.
- Connect the test leads to the LED, observing polarity.
- The multimeter will display the forward voltage (Vf) of the LED.
6.6. Diode and Continuity Test
- Turn the rotary dial to the 'Diode/Continuity' position.
- For Diode Test: Connect the test leads across the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads to check for open circuit.
- For Continuity Test: Connect the test leads across the circuit. An audible buzz indicates continuity.
6.7. HOLD Function
Press the 'HOLD' button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release and resume live readings.
6.8. Backlight
Press the backlight button (often indicated by a light bulb icon) to illuminate the display for better visibility in low-light conditions.
7. Maintenance
7.1. Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the terminals free of dirt and moisture.
7.2. Battery Replacement
When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in the 'Battery Installation' section (5.1).
7.3. Fuse Replacement
If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the safety section and consult a qualified technician if you are unsure how to replace the fuse.
8. Troubleshooting
- No display or dim display: Check battery installation and charge. Replace batteries if necessary.
- Incorrect readings: Ensure test leads are correctly connected to the appropriate jacks and the rotary dial is set to the correct function and range. Check for damaged test leads.
- Current measurement not working: Check the fuse.
- LED Test not working: Ensure correct polarity when connecting the LED.
