5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Basic Operation
- Power On: Press the trigger to turn on the device. The LCD display will light up.
- Measurement: Aim the thermometer at the target surface. Press and hold the trigger. The temperature reading will appear on the display. Release the trigger to hold the reading.
- Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S): The HP-1580-APP has a D:S ratio of 30:1. This means that at a distance of 30 inches, the measurement spot diameter is 1 inch. Ensure you are within the appropriate distance for accurate readings.
5.2. Button Functions
The device features several buttons for various functions:
- Trigger: Press to power on and initiate measurement. Release to hold the reading.
- Laser Pointer Button (
): Press once to turn on the dual laser pointers for targeting. Press again to turn them off. - BL/UP Button (
): Activates the backlight. In settings mode, it increases values or sets high alarm temperature. - T/DN Button (
): Toggles between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F). In settings mode, it decreases values or sets low alarm temperature. - MODE Button: Cycles through various display options: MAX (maximum temperature), MIN (minimum temperature), DIF (difference between MAX and MIN), AVG (average temperature), HAL (high alarm limit), LAL (low alarm limit), and REC (record mode).
- E Button: Enters emissivity adjustment mode. Use the BL/UP and T/DN buttons to adjust the emissivity value (0.1 to 1.0).

5.3. Emissivity Adjustment
Emissivity is crucial for accurate temperature readings. Different materials emit infrared energy differently. Refer to the included emissivity sheet or common values:
- Asphalt: 0.90 to 0.98
- Ice: 0.96 to 0.98
- Wood: 0.90
- Iron/Copper: 0.78 to 0.82
- Water: 0.92 to 0.96
To adjust emissivity, press the 'E' button and use the 'BL/UP' and 'T/DN' buttons to set the desired value between 0.1 and 1.0.

5.4. High/Low Temperature Alarm
You can set high and low temperature alarms. When the measured temperature exceeds the set limits, the device will alert you.
- Press the MODE button until HAL (High Alarm Limit) or LAL (Low Alarm Limit) is displayed.
- Use the BL/UP and T/DN buttons to set the desired alarm temperature.

8. User Tips
- For best accuracy, ensure the target is larger than the measurement spot size. The further away you are, the larger the spot size.
- Always adjust the emissivity setting to match the material being measured. Incorrect emissivity is a common cause of inaccurate readings.
- Allow the thermometer to stabilize for at least 30 minutes when moving between environments with significant temperature differences (e.g., from cold outdoors to warm indoors).
- The mobile app is excellent for monitoring temperature trends over time and setting precise alarms for critical applications.
- Keep the lens clean for optimal performance.

9. Maintenance
9.1. Cleaning
- To clean the lens, use a soft cloth or cotton swab with water or medical alcohol.
- Wipe the device casing with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
9.2. Storage
- Store the device in its carrying bag when not in use to protect it from dust and damage.
- Remove the battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
10. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display/Device won't turn on | Low or dead battery; Incorrect battery installation | Replace the 9V battery; Ensure battery is installed with correct polarity. |
| Inaccurate readings | Incorrect emissivity setting; Distance too far from target; Lens is dirty; Device not stabilized to ambient temperature. | Adjust emissivity for the target material; Move closer to the target (within D:S ratio); Clean the lens; Allow device to acclimate to ambient temperature. |
| "HI" or "LOW" displayed | Temperature exceeds measurement range; Temperature exceeds set alarm limits. | Ensure target temperature is within the device's range (-50℃ to 1580℃); Check and adjust high/low alarm settings if applicable. |
| Cannot connect to mobile app | Bluetooth is off on phone/device; App not installed or updated; Device too far from phone. | Ensure Bluetooth is active on both devices; Download/update AiLink app; Keep phone close to the thermometer during pairing. |
