UNI-T UT3513 & UT3516 Micro Ohm Meter User Manual

Models: UT3513, UT3516

Brand: UNI-T

1. Introduction

The UNI-T UT3513 and UT3516 Micro Ohm Meters are advanced digital DC resistance testers designed for precise measurement of low resistance values. These instruments are part of the UT3510 series and are equipped with professional sorting functions, allowing for HI/IN/LO judgment of resistance. Measurement results are clearly displayed on the screen, indicated by a buzzer, and available through external I/O output. With an enhanced PC remote-control instruction set and compatibility with SCPI, these meters efficiently support remote control and data collection, making them suitable for a wide range of applications including testing motors, transformers, relays, switches, connectors, wires, resistors, fuses, heaters, PCBs, and batteries.

2. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your UNI-T Micro Ohm Meter for operation:

  1. Power Connection: Connect the provided international standard power cord to the AC 100-240V 50/60Hz power input on the rear panel of the instrument. Ensure the power cord is properly grounded to prevent electric shock.
  2. Test Lead Connection: For accurate measurements, use the supplied Kelvin test leads for four-terminal measurement. Connect the DRIVE and SENSE terminals to the corresponding points on the device under test.
  3. Temperature Sensor (UT3513 only): If using the UT3513 model and requiring temperature compensation, connect the temperature compensation line to the 'TEMPERATURE SENSOR' port on the rear panel.
  4. Interface Connections (Optional):
    • For remote control or data transfer, connect a USB cable to the 'USB DEVICE' port or an RS232 cable to the 'RS-232C' port.
    • For automated testing systems, utilize the 'HANDLER' interface.
    • The 'USB HOST' port can be used for connecting external storage devices.
  5. Initial Power-On: Press the power button to turn on the device. The 4.3-inch TFT LCD will display the startup screen.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Basic Resistance Measurement

  1. Ensure the device is properly set up and powered on.
  2. Connect the Kelvin test leads to the component you wish to measure, ensuring good contact for all four terminals.
  3. Select the appropriate resistance range. The meter supports Auto, Manual, and Nominal range modes. For most applications, Auto-ranging is sufficient.
  4. Press the 'Test' button to initiate a measurement. The DC resistance value will be displayed on the 4.3-inch TFT LCD.
  5. The measurement speed can be adjusted (Slow, Medium, Rapid for UT3516) via system settings to balance accuracy and measurement time.

3.2 Comparator Function (Sorting)

The UT3513 and UT3516 feature a professional sorting function to classify components based on resistance values:

  1. Access the 'COMP' (Comparator) settings from the main menu.
  2. Define the upper and lower limits for the resistance range.
  3. Select the comparing method: Absolute tolerance, percentage tolerance, or direct-reading comparison.
  4. During measurement, the device will indicate if the resistance is HI (above upper limit), IN (within range), or LO (below lower limit). This result is shown on screen, via buzzer, and through external I/O output.

3.3 Data Management and System Settings

  • Data Hold: Use the 'Data Hold' function to freeze the current measurement on the display.
  • Data Storage: The instrument supports data storage. Refer to the on-screen menu or the full electronic manual for detailed instructions on saving and recalling measurements.
  • Keyboard Lock: Activate the keyboard lock feature to prevent accidental changes to settings during continuous operation.
  • System Setup: Customize settings such as display language (Chinese/English) and key tone via the 'System Setup' menu.
  • Remote Control: Utilize the RS232, USB Device, or Handler interfaces with SCPI and Modbus protocols for remote control and automated data acquisition using upper computer software.

4. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the instrument's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no liquids enter the device.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the Micro Ohm Meter in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity.
  • Calibration: The device supports short-circuit full range zeroing for calibration. For advanced calibration or service, contact authorized UNI-T service centers.
  • Battery (if applicable): While primarily AC powered, if any internal backup battery exists (not specified in provided data), ensure it is maintained according to general battery care guidelines.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter. For more complex problems, please refer to the full electronic user manual or contact technical support.

  • No Power:
    • Check if the power cord is securely connected to both the instrument and the AC outlet.
    • Verify that the AC outlet is supplying power.
    • Ensure the power switch is in the 'ON' position.
  • Inaccurate Readings:
    • Ensure the Kelvin test leads are properly connected to the four terminals of the device under test, making good contact.
    • Perform a short-circuit full range zeroing calibration.
    • Check for any external interference or environmental factors affecting the measurement.
    • Verify the correct range mode is selected (Auto, Manual, Nominal).
  • Comparator Function Not Working:
    • Confirm that the upper and lower limits for the resistance range are correctly set in the 'COMP' settings.
    • Ensure the comparing method is appropriately selected.
