Model: Matrix 1S 5IN1 V1.0

Brand: BETAFPV

1. Introduction

The BETAFPV Matrix 1S 5IN1 V1.0 Brushless Flight Controller is a highly integrated solution designed for both beginners and FPV enthusiasts. It features a robust 1mm-thick board for enhanced durability, especially during training, and includes built-in motor plugs to simplify installation by eliminating the need for soldering. Powered by an upgraded G473 processor, it offers a significant 55% performance boost over the F411, enabling more precise control for racing and freestyle flying. Additionally, its premium 5.8GHz 400mW VTX ensures stable and high-quality video transmission. This flight controller is ideal for FPV drones such as the Meteor65 Pro and Meteor75 Pro.

2. Safety Information

  • VTX Power Management: Higher VTX power settings consume more energy and generate increased heat, which can reduce flight time. For optimal flight duration in indoor environments, it is recommended to use VTX power settings between 25mW and 100mW.
  • VTX Antenna Connection: Always connect and properly install the video transmission (VTX) antenna before powering on the flight controller. Failure to do so, or setting the transmission power to 0, can prevent VTX burnout.
  • Firmware Flashing Caution: Do NOT flash the firmware with a shorter interval than recommended. Incorrect flashing procedures can lead to stalling or permanent damage to the flight controller.
  • Environmental Protection: Avoid exposing the flight controller to water, excessive moisture, or extreme temperatures.
  • Power Supply: Ensure the power supply voltage and current are within the specified limits to prevent damage.

5.2 Serial Ports, Integrated RX and VTX Configuration

By default, UART2 is connected to the VTX and UART3 is connected to the RX. To release UART3 for other uses, you must remove the corresponding resistor. This flight controller also provides 2 complete full-featured serial ports that can be utilized for external CRSF/SBUS receivers, GPS modules, HD VTX systems, or other serial devices.

5.3 Firmware

5.3.1 Betaflight Firmware and CLI

Betaflight official developers recommend using version 42688 of the gyroscope. Many issues with ICM42688 have been resolved in Betaflight version 4.5.0. For more information, refer to version 4.5.0.

5.3.2 Bluejay ESC Firmware

The Matrix 1S Brushless Flight Controller utilizes the BB51 ESC solution. It is based on the A_X_5_96KHz_V0.19.hex firmware for BB51 Bluejay hardware. This ESC supports D-shot300, D-shot600, and RPM filtering in Betaflight. It offers 24KHz, 48KHz, and 96KHz fixed PWM frequency options, along with custom start-up melodies.

5.4 ELRS 2.4G RX Binding and Firmware Update

The Serial ELRS 2.4G RX communicates with the flight controller board using the Crossfire serial protocol (CRSF protocol). This allows the Serial ELRS 2.4G RX to be upgraded to ELRS V3.0 without needing to flash the Betaflight flight controller firmware.

5.4.1 Entering Binding Status

To enter binding status, power on/off the flight controller three times:

  1. Plug in and unplug the flight controller three times.
  2. Observe the RX LED: a quick double blink indicates the receiver is in bind mode.
  3. Ensure your RF TX module or radio transmitter enters binding status, which sends out a binding pulse.
  4. If the receiver has a solid light, it is successfully bound.

5.4.2 Updating ELRS RX Firmware via Passthrough

The Serial ELRS 2.4G RX firmware can be updated via Wi-Fi or Betaflight serial passthrough. For passthrough updates:

  1. Plug your FC into your computer.
  2. Connect to ExpressLRS Configurator instead of Betaflight Configurator.
  3. Choose the target "BETAFPV 2.4GHz AIO RX".
  4. Flash the firmware using the BetaflightPassthrough option in ExpressLRS Configurator.

6. Operating Instructions

Once the flight controller is properly installed, configured, and bound to your radio transmitter, you can proceed with operating your FPV drone. Ensure all pre-flight checks are completed, including battery levels, propeller security, and clear flight path. Always operate your drone responsibly and in accordance with local regulations.

7. Maintenance

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the flight controller for any signs of physical damage, loose connections, or debris.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the board clean from dust, dirt, and moisture. Use a soft, dry brush or compressed air for cleaning.
  • Antenna Care: Always ensure the VTX antenna is securely connected before powering on to prevent damage to the VTX module.
  • Firmware Updates: Keep firmware updated to the latest stable versions to benefit from performance improvements and bug fixes.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Check battery connection, power cable integrity, and ensure the battery is charged.
  • No Video Feed: Verify VTX antenna connection, VTX power settings, and camera wiring. Ensure your FPV goggles/monitor are on the correct frequency.
  • Unresponsive Controls: Check receiver binding status (solid RX LED), radio transmitter settings, and ensure correct protocol (CRSF) is selected in Betaflight.
  • Flight Instability: Review Betaflight configuration, PID settings, and ensure propellers are undamaged and correctly mounted.
  • Firmware Update Issues: If experiencing issues after a firmware update, ensure you followed the instructions precisely. Do not flash firmware with shorter intervals than specified to avoid damage.

9. User Tips

  • Beginner-Friendly Design: The Matrix 1S FC is ideal for beginners due to its enhanced durability (1mm thick board) and simplified installation with built-in motor plugs, eliminating the need for welding.
  • Optimizing Flight Time: For indoor flying or to maximize flight duration, consider reducing your VTX power output to between 25mW and 100mW.
  • Advanced Pilot Alternative: For experienced FPV pilots seeking a lighter, more responsive, and race-oriented experience, the BETAFPV Air Brushless FC 5IN1 version is recommended as an alternative.
  • Meteor75 Pro Upgrade: As of November 20, the Meteor75 Pro is upgraded with the Matrix 1S Brushless FC, offering improved durability and performance for both indoor and outdoor FPV racing and freestyle flying.
