1. Introduction

The Riland MIG-251 GE is an industrial-grade, dual-purpose welding machine designed for both MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding operations. It incorporates advanced IGBT inverter technology for stable output current and high efficiency. This portable and energy-saving welder is suitable for a wide range of applications, from sheet metal processing to heavy industrial use.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when operating welding equipment. Read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before use. Ensure proper ventilation, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including welding helmet, gloves, and protective clothing. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Do not operate the machine in wet conditions or near flammable materials.

  • Ensure the work area is well-ventilated to reduce dust and smoke inhalation.
  • Wear a welding helmet with appropriate shade, welding gloves, and protective clothing.
  • Avoid direct exposure to arc light and sparks. The low arc function helps weaken infrared and ultraviolet light.
  • Do not touch live electrical parts.
  • Ensure the machine is properly grounded.
  • In case of over-temperature or over-current, the machine will automatically stop for protection. Allow it to cool down before resuming operation.

5. Setup

5.1 Unpacking and Inspection

  • Carefully remove the welding machine and all accessories from the packaging.
  • Inspect the machine for any signs of damage during transit. If damaged, contact your supplier immediately.
  • Verify that all standard accessories are present: 1 matching welding gun, 1 ground wire.

5.2 Power Connection

  • Ensure the power switch on the welder is in the OFF position.
  • Connect the welder to a 220V ±15% power supply. Ensure the power outlet is properly grounded and can handle the rated input capacity of 5.6KVA.
  • The rear view of the welder (Figure 2) shows the power input cable connection.

5.3 Welding Cable Connections

  • Ground Clamp: Connect the ground clamp cable to the appropriate terminal on the front panel (usually marked with a ground symbol or '-'). Secure the ground clamp to the workpiece, ensuring good electrical contact.
  • MIG Welding Gun: Connect the MIG welding gun to the designated connector on the front panel. Ensure it is securely fastened.
  • MMA Electrode Holder (if applicable): For MMA welding, connect the electrode holder cable to the positive (+) terminal and the ground clamp to the negative (-) terminal.

5.4 Gas Connection (for MIG Gas Shielded Welding)

  • For gas-shielded MIG welding, connect your CO2 gas cylinder to the 'GAS IN' port located at the rear of the machine (refer to Figure 2).
  • Ensure all gas connections are tight and leak-free.
  • If performing gasless MIG welding, this step can be skipped as the machine supports it.

5.5 Welding Wire Installation

  • Open the wire feeder compartment.
  • Install the appropriate welding wire (0.8mm recommended) onto the spool holder.
  • Thread the welding wire through the wire feeder mechanism and into the welding gun liner. Ensure the wire feeds smoothly.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Powering On

  • Once all connections are secure, turn the main power switch to the ON position.
  • The machine's display (if present) should light up, indicating it is ready for operation.

6.2 Mode Selection and Parameter Adjustment

  • Select the desired welding mode (MIG or MMA) using the control panel.
  • Adjust the welding parameters using the three knobs:
    • Current: Controls the welding current (40-90A for both MIG and MMA).
    • Voltage: Controls the welding voltage (61V rated output for MIG).
    • Inductance: Fine-tunes the arc characteristics for MIG welding.
  • For beginners, the Riland smart chip offers one-button adjustment and automatic parameter matching to simplify setup.

6.3 Welding Process

  • MIG Welding:
    • Ensure gas flow is set correctly (if using gas-shielded MIG).
    • Position the welding gun at the starting point of the weld.
    • Press the trigger to initiate the arc and wire feed.
    • Maintain a consistent travel speed and arc length for optimal weld quality.
    • The high-quality wire feeding device ensures smooth and non-stop welding.
  • MMA Welding:
    • Strike the electrode against the workpiece to initiate the arc.
    • Maintain a consistent arc length and travel speed.
    • The machine's stable output current helps in achieving good welding quality.

6.4 Post-Welding

  • Release the welding gun trigger or lift the electrode from the workpiece to stop welding.
  • Allow the workpiece to cool before handling.
  • Turn off the gas supply (if used).
  • Turn off the main power switch on the welder.
