4. Installation Guide

Proper installation is crucial for optimal cooling performance and aesthetic integration.

4.1. Physical Installation

  1. Prepare Mounting Location: Identify the desired mounting locations within your PC case or on your radiator. Ensure there is sufficient clearance for the 120mm x 120mm x 25mm fan.
  2. Mount the Fans: Use the provided mounting screws to secure each fan to the chosen location. Ensure the fan is oriented correctly for desired airflow (intake or exhaust).
  3. Wire-Free Splicing (for multiple fans): The ZL-120/ZH-120 fans feature a unique wire-free splicing design. Align the upper and lower sliding buckle structures of adjacent fans and slide them together. This connects the contact points using a 2-3μm gold plating, ensuring a stable connection and reducing cable clutter.

4.2. Electrical Connections

  1. PWM Connection: Connect the 4-pin PWM cable from the fan (or the last fan in a spliced chain) to an available 4-pin fan header on your motherboard. This allows for automatic fan speed control based on CPU or system temperature.
  2. ARGB Connection: Connect the 3-pin ARGB cable from the fan (or the last fan in a spliced chain) to a compatible 3-pin 5V ARGB header on your motherboard or an ARGB controller. Ensure it is a 5V ARGB header and NOT a 12V RGB header to prevent damage.

Important Note: If you intend to install fans in separate areas of your PC case that cannot be physically spliced together, you will need to acquire additional ARGB data cables to connect them to your controller or motherboard for synchronized lighting.

5. Operation

5.1. Fan Speed Control (PWM)

The 4-pin PWM connector allows your motherboard to dynamically adjust the fan speed based on system temperature. This ensures efficient cooling when needed and quieter operation during lighter loads. You can typically configure fan curves through your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI settings or dedicated software provided by your motherboard manufacturer.

5.2. ARGB Lighting Control

The 3-pin 5V ARGB connector enables control over the fan's lighting effects. You can customize colors, patterns, and synchronization through:

  • Motherboard Software: If connected to a compatible ARGB header, you can use software like ASUS Aura Sync, GIGABYTE RGB Fusion, MSI Mystic Light Sync, or ASRock Polychrome Sync to control the lighting.
  • ARGB Controller: If your motherboard lacks an ARGB header, or if you prefer a dedicated solution, connect the fans to an external ARGB controller (sold separately).

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your fans.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the fan blades and frame to remove dust buildup. Use a can of compressed air or a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dust, a slightly damp cloth can be used, ensuring the fan is completely dry before powering on.
  • Inspection: Check fan cables for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure all connections are secure.
  • Avoid Lubrication: The hydraulic bearings are sealed and do not require external lubrication. Attempting to lubricate them may cause damage.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1. Fan Not Spinning

  • Check if the 4-pin PWM cable is securely connected to the motherboard fan header.
  • Ensure the fan header is enabled in your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI settings.
  • Verify that your power supply is providing adequate power to the fan headers.
  • Test the fan on a different fan header or with a known working fan to rule out a faulty fan.

8.2. ARGB Lighting Not Working/Synchronizing

  • Ensure the 3-pin 5V ARGB cable is correctly connected to a compatible 5V ARGB header on your motherboard or controller. Do NOT connect to a 12V RGB header.
  • Check the ARGB software (e.g., Aura Sync, Mystic Light) or controller settings to ensure lighting effects are enabled and configured correctly.
  • Verify that all spliced fans are properly connected for the ARGB signal to pass through.
  • If using an external controller, ensure it is powered correctly.

8.3. Unusual Noise

  • Check for any cables or obstructions hitting the fan blades.
  • Ensure the fan is securely mounted and the anti-vibration pads are properly seated.
  • Dust buildup can sometimes cause imbalance and noise; clean the fan thoroughly.
  • If the noise persists and is mechanical, the fan bearing might be faulty.

9. User Tips

  • Cable Management: While the wire-free splicing reduces cable clutter between fans, take time to route the main PWM and ARGB cables neatly for improved airflow and aesthetics.
  • Separate Fan Zones: If you plan to install fans in different sections of your PC case that are not adjacent, remember that the wire-free splicing only works for directly connected fans. You will need to purchase additional ARGB extension cables to connect separate fan groups to your ARGB controller or motherboard for synchronized lighting.
  • Airflow Direction: Pay attention to the airflow direction indicators on the fan frame during installation to ensure optimal cooling for your system. The seven-blade design supports both front (air intake) and reverse (draughttight) airflow depending on the fan model.
