Note: TA654A models come with a 5-meter external probe. TA654B models feature a built-in sensor and USB data transfer capabilities.

3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Component Identification

3.2 Power Connection

Connect the device to a DC 5V/1A power source using the provided USB cable and a compatible power adapter (not always included). The USB power communication interface is located on the side of the unit.

3.3 Mounting Options

The TASI Sound Level Meter offers versatile mounting options:

  • Wall Hanging: Use the two wall hook holes on the back panel (spacing 148mm) to mount the device securely on a wall using screws.
  • Hanging: Attach the provided hanging hooks to the top of the device and suspend it from a suitable fixture.
  • Hidden Bracket: Utilize the integrated hidden bracket on the back for desktop placement.
  • External Bracket: Use the 1/4" inch copper nut to attach the device to a tripod or other external mounting bracket.

3.4 External Alarm Connection (Optional)

The device features an alarm output port that can be connected to an external alarm device, such as a 12V alarm horn. Use a 3.5mm 2-pole or 3-pole audio cable (self-purchased) to connect the alarm output port to your external alarm system.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

Press the Power button (⏻) to turn the device on or off.

4.2 Reading the Display

  • Noise Data Display Area: Shows the current decibel (dB) reading in large red LED digits.
  • Analog Bar Level Display: Provides a quick visual representation of the noise level.

    • Green indicators: 30 - 75 dB (First green: 30-45dB, Second green: 46-60dB, Third green: 61-75dB)
    • Red indicators: 70 - 130 dB (Fourth red: 76-90dB, Fifth red: 91-105dB, Sixth red: 106-130dB)
  • Alarm Indicator: Flashes when the set upper limit alarm is triggered.
  • REC Indicator (TA654B only): Illuminates when data recording is active.
  • USB Indicator (TA654B only): Illuminates when the device is connected via USB.

4.3 Setting the Upper Limit Alarm

The upper limit alarm can be set to trigger a buzzer sound and flash the alarm indicator when the noise level exceeds a predefined threshold. The alarm time setting can be adjusted from 6 to 120 seconds.

Use the 'SEL' button to enter the setting mode, and the 'Up' (▲) and 'Down' (▼) buttons to adjust the alarm threshold and duration. Refer to the detailed instructions in the full manual for specific steps.

4.4 Data Storage and USB Transfer (TA654B only)

The TA654B model automatically and continuously stores the maximum noise value every 2 seconds. It retains data for up to one year, with data older than one year being automatically cleared. This model supports USB connection for real-time data monitoring and export.

To utilize data transfer features:

  1. Connect the TA654B to a computer using the provided USB cable.
  2. Install the dedicated software (usually provided on a CD or available for download from the manufacturer's website).
  3. The software allows for:
    • Online real-time monitoring of noise levels.
    • Reading and saving recorded data.
    • Exporting data in formats like XLSX or LAB.
    • Setting upper and lower alarm values directly from the software.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Device does not power on:
    Ensure the USB power cable is securely connected to a DC 5V/1A power source and the power outlet is functional.
  • No sound level reading:
    Check if the microphone sensor is unobstructed. Ensure the device is powered on and functioning correctly.
  • Alarm not triggering:
    Verify that the alarm switch is enabled and the upper limit alarm threshold is set appropriately. Check the alarm time setting.
  • USB data transfer not working (TA654B only):
    Ensure the USB cable is properly connected to both the device and the computer. Confirm that the necessary software drivers are installed on your computer. Try restarting the software and the device.
  • Inaccurate readings:
    Ensure the device is placed in an appropriate location, away from direct airflow or strong electromagnetic interference. Consider performing a calibration if available or contacting support for assistance.

8. User Tips

  • Optimal Placement: For accurate readings, place the sound level meter in a central location within the area to be monitored, away from walls or reflective surfaces that might distort sound.
  • Environmental Considerations: While the device is designed for indoor use, avoid placing it in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations or high humidity, which can affect performance.
  • Regular Monitoring: For environments requiring continuous noise monitoring, utilize the data logging feature of the TA654B model to track trends over time.
