5. Setup and Installation
This section outlines the general steps for installing your hydraulic steering kit. Professional installation is recommended if you are unfamiliar with marine hydraulic systems.
5.1 Engine Compatibility
The VEVOR HSX-90HP kit is compatible with various outboard motors up to 90HP. Refer to the table below for common compatible engine models. If your engine is not listed, consult your engine manufacturer's specifications or a marine professional.

5.2 Hydraulic Steering Cylinder Installation
The hydraulic steering cylinder connects to your engine's steering tiller arm and tilt rod. Ensure proper alignment and secure mounting using the provided tile tube mounting rods and hardware.

5.3 Hydraulic Pump and Hose Connection
- Mount the hydraulic steering pump in a suitable location at the helm, ensuring easy access for operation and maintenance.
- The 20 ft high-pressure hoses can be cut to your specific installation needs. Use appropriate tools for cutting and ensure clean, precise cuts.
- Connect the hoses to the hydraulic pump and cylinder using the 5/16" quick-fit connectors. Ensure all connections are tight and secure to prevent leaks.

6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Initial Bleeding Procedure
Before the first use, it is crucial to fill the system with hydraulic oil and purge any air to ensure optimal performance and prevent damage. This process is also known as 'bleeding the system'.
- Locate the filler port on the hydraulic pump. Use 10# or 15# specialized hydraulic oil.
- Fill the pump with hydraulic oil.
- Turn the steering wheel clockwise while opening the left side bleeder nut on the cylinder. Close the bleeder once oil flows out without air bubbles.
- Turn the steering wheel counter-clockwise while opening the right side bleeder nut on the cylinder. Close the bleeder once oil flows out without air bubbles.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 several times until no air bubbles are observed from either bleeder.
- Top off the hydraulic oil in the filler port if necessary.

6.2 Normal Operation
Once the system is properly bled, the steering wheel will provide smooth and responsive control of your outboard motor. The built-in two-way lock valve in the hydraulic cylinder ensures positive rudder lock, eliminating rebound torque and maintaining your desired course.
7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is essential to prolong the lifespan and ensure the reliable operation of your hydraulic steering system.
7.1 Replaceable Shaft Seal
The hydraulic pump features a detachable oil seal design, simplifying future inspections and maintenance. If the oil seal ages or becomes damaged, it can be easily replaced.
- Disassemble the top 3 screws on the hydraulic pump.
- Carefully remove the old shaft seal.
- Install the new shaft seal, ensuring it is properly seated.
- Reassemble the screws.

7.2 Hydraulic Fluid Check and Air Purge
If you notice a decrease in steering performance or delayed response, check the hydraulic fluid level and perform an air purge as described in Section 6.1. Ensure the system is always filled with the correct type and amount of hydraulic oil.
7.3 General Inspection
- Periodically inspect all hydraulic lines and connections for leaks, cracks, or damage.
- Check the mounting hardware for tightness.
- Ensure the steering cylinder and pump are free from corrosion, especially in marine environments. The aluminum alloy shell of the rudder shaft is designed to resist seawater erosion.
8. Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Stiff or Spongy Steering | Air in the hydraulic system; Low hydraulic fluid level | Perform the air bleeding procedure (Section 6.1); Check and refill hydraulic fluid. |
| Steering Drifts or Does Not Hold Course | Air in the hydraulic system; Internal leak in pump or cylinder; Faulty lock valve | Perform air bleeding; Inspect for leaks; Contact support if problem persists. |
| Hydraulic Fluid Leaks | Loose connections; Damaged hoses or seals | Tighten all fittings; Inspect hoses and replace if damaged; Replace shaft seal if necessary (Section 7.1). |
| No Steering Response | Completely empty hydraulic system; Major component failure | Refill and bleed system thoroughly; Inspect all components for severe damage; Contact support. |
9. User Tips
- Always carry a small bottle of the recommended hydraulic oil on board for emergency top-ups.
- After initial installation and bleeding, operate the boat for a short period and then re-check the hydraulic fluid level and re-bleed if necessary, as trapped air can sometimes work its way out during initial use.
- Consider adding a protective sleeve or conduit to exposed hydraulic hoses to prevent abrasion and UV damage, especially in high-traffic areas of the boat.
