Introduction
The NOYAFA NF-817L is a professional underground cable locator designed to accurately trace and locate buried and hidden wires. It helps in quickly identifying breakpoints and the direction of underground and wall-through cables. This device is suitable for various applications including pet fences, irrigation systems, and construction sites, offering both visual and auditory indications for efficient cable testing.

Safety Information
- WARNING: Do not use this device on live circuits to avoid damaging the Tester! The underground wire tracer is only designed to locate non-energized cables.
- Always ensure the cable being tested is completely de-energized before connecting the device.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with electrical systems.
- Keep the device away from water and extreme temperatures.
Product Overview
The NF-817L consists of a Transmitter and a Receiver, each with distinct components for effective cable tracing.

Receiver Components:
- Receiver LED
- Push For Light Button (LED Flashlight activation)
- Antenna
- LED Flash Light
- Earphone Jack
- Thumb Wheel Switch (Sensitivity Adjustment)
Transmitter Components:
- ON/OFF Switch
- Thumb Wheel Switch (Power/Cable Scan/Battery Test/OFF/Status)
- Transmitter LED
- Transmitter Switch
- Status LED
- Alligator Clips & Leads (Red and Black)
Setup
Before operating the NF-817L, ensure proper connection and grounding for accurate results.
- Connect the Transmitter:
- Identify the target wire (non-energized) you wish to trace.
- Connect the red alligator clip of the transmitter to the signal line of the target wire.
- Connect the black alligator clip to a ground point. To enhance the signal, you can use a metal rod (like a screwdriver) inserted into the ground as a grounding stud.

Connecting the transmitter to the target line and grounding it. - Power On:
- Turn on both the Transmitter and the Receiver using their respective ON/OFF switches.
- Ensure the status LEDs on both units indicate they are powered on and functioning.
- Adjust Sensitivity:
- Use the Thumb Wheel Switch on the Receiver to adjust its sensitivity to an appropriate value. This helps in fine-tuning the detection range.
Operating Instructions
Follow these steps to effectively trace wires and locate breakpoints:
- Wire Connection Guidelines:
- For single-core or double-core wire: The red alligator clip is the signal line. The black alligator clip is used to connect to the ground, neutral line, or an unloaded line.
- For shielded wire and multi-stranded wire: If testing the direction of a shielded wire, the red clip should grip the shielding layer. Note that for these types of wires, it might be difficult to determine the exact breakpoint due to signal interference, but the line direction can still be tested.
- Start Tracing:
- With the Transmitter connected and powered on, begin scanning with the Receiver.
- Swing the Receiver back and forth over the suspected path of the wire. You will hear a "bi bi bi" sound when the receiver detects the signal.

- As you approach a breakpoint in the cable, the tone from the Receiver will weaken and then disappear. The point where the tone disappears indicates the location of the breakpoint (open circuit or short circuit).
- Using Headphones:
- In noisy environments, connect the provided earphones to the Receiver's earphone jack. This helps to improve detection efficiency and prevent distractions.
- Tracing In-Wall Cables:
- The NF-817L can also be used to find cables inside walls and locate short circuits or breakpoints using the same method as finding underground cables.

Application Scenarios
The NF-817L is versatile and can be used in various situations:
- Pet fence cables
- Piped cables (e.g., under floors)
- Underground irrigation cables
- Cables for urban buildings
- In-wall cables

Maintenance
- Keep the device clean and free from dust and dirt. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
- Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- For the NF-817L model with a rechargeable lithium battery, ensure regular charging to maintain battery health. Avoid fully discharging the battery for extended periods.
- Inspect the alligator clips and leads for any signs of wear or damage before each use. Replace if necessary.
Troubleshooting
- No Signal/Weak Signal:
- Ensure the target cable is de-energized.
- Check all connections, especially the grounding of the black alligator clip. Ensure a good connection to a metal rod inserted into the ground.
- Increase the Receiver's sensitivity using the Thumb Wheel Switch.
- Verify that both the Transmitter and Receiver are powered on and have sufficient battery charge.
- For shielded or multi-stranded wires, signal interference might occur, making breakpoint detection difficult. However, line direction can still be tested. If testing a shielded wire, ensure the red clip grips the shielding layer.
- Inaccurate Breakpoint Location:
- Ensure the sensitivity is appropriately adjusted. Too high sensitivity might pick up faint signals beyond the actual breakpoint.
- Move slowly and methodically when tracing to pinpoint the exact location where the tone disappears.
- Interference from Noisy Environment:
- Utilize the earphone function by plugging in the provided earphones into the Receiver's earphone jack.
User Tips
- For optimal performance and to enhance the signal, always ensure a good ground connection for the black alligator clip. A metal rod (like a screwdriver) driven into the earth can serve as an effective ground stud.
- The NF-817L is designed to track wires up to 2.6 feet (0.8m) deep and 1640 feet (500m) in length. While effective, remember that environmental factors and cable type can influence actual detection range.
- When tracing, move the receiver slowly and steadily. Rapid movements can lead to missed signals or inaccurate readings.
