Setup

Before operating the NF-817L, ensure proper connection and grounding for accurate results.

  1. Connect the Transmitter:
    • Identify the target wire (non-energized) you wish to trace.
    • Connect the red alligator clip of the transmitter to the signal line of the target wire.
    • Connect the black alligator clip to a ground point. To enhance the signal, you can use a metal rod (like a screwdriver) inserted into the ground as a grounding stud.

  2. Power On:
    • Turn on both the Transmitter and the Receiver using their respective ON/OFF switches.
    • Ensure the status LEDs on both units indicate they are powered on and functioning.
  3. Adjust Sensitivity:
    • Use the Thumb Wheel Switch on the Receiver to adjust its sensitivity to an appropriate value. This helps in fine-tuning the detection range.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to effectively trace wires and locate breakpoints:

  1. Wire Connection Guidelines:
    • For single-core or double-core wire: The red alligator clip is the signal line. The black alligator clip is used to connect to the ground, neutral line, or an unloaded line.
    • For shielded wire and multi-stranded wire: If testing the direction of a shielded wire, the red clip should grip the shielding layer. Note that for these types of wires, it might be difficult to determine the exact breakpoint due to signal interference, but the line direction can still be tested.
  2. Start Tracing:
    • With the Transmitter connected and powered on, begin scanning with the Receiver.
    • Swing the Receiver back and forth over the suspected path of the wire. You will hear a "bi bi bi" sound when the receiver detects the signal.

  3. Locate Breakpoints:
    • As you approach a breakpoint in the cable, the tone from the Receiver will weaken and then disappear. The point where the tone disappears indicates the location of the breakpoint (open circuit or short circuit).
  4. Using Headphones:
    • In noisy environments, connect the provided earphones to the Receiver's earphone jack. This helps to improve detection efficiency and prevent distractions.
  5. Tracing In-Wall Cables:
    • The NF-817L can also be used to find cables inside walls and locate short circuits or breakpoints using the same method as finding underground cables.

  • Inaccurate Breakpoint Location:
    • Ensure the sensitivity is appropriately adjusted. Too high sensitivity might pick up faint signals beyond the actual breakpoint.
    • Move slowly and methodically when tracing to pinpoint the exact location where the tone disappears.
  • Interference from Noisy Environment:
    • Utilize the earphone function by plugging in the provided earphones into the Receiver's earphone jack.

  • For optimal performance and to enhance the signal, always ensure a good ground connection for the black alligator clip. A metal rod (like a screwdriver) driven into the earth can serve as an effective ground stud.
  • The NF-817L is designed to track wires up to 2.6 feet (0.8m) deep and 1640 feet (500m) in length. While effective, remember that environmental factors and cable type can influence actual detection range.
  • When tracing, move the receiver slowly and steadily. Rapid movements can lead to missed signals or inaccurate readings.
