The Blackbird BB16 and BB16S are advanced GPS bike computers designed to track your cycling data with precision. The BB16S model offers enhanced features, including support for external sensors like heart rate, speed, and pedal frequency.

Setup

1. Package Contents

Ensure all items are present in your package:

2. Mounting the Device

  1. Attach the bike mount to your handlebar or stem using the provided rubber rings.
  2. Align the back of the Blackbird computer with the mount.
  3. Twist the computer clockwise until it locks securely into place.

Safety Information: Please pay attention to safety during installation to prevent the device from falling off during your ride.

3. Initial Power-On and GPS Acquisition

  1. Press and hold the power button (usually on the side or bottom) to turn on the device.
  2. For initial GPS acquisition, take the device outdoors to an open area. The device will automatically search for satellite signals.
  3. The GPS icon on the display will become solid when a signal is acquired. The device supports two satellite positioning systems for accuracy.

4. Pairing External Devices (BB16S Only)

The BB16S supports linking with external speed, pedal frequency, and heart rate intelligent peripherals via universal Bluetooth radio.

  1. Ensure your external sensors (Heart Rate, Speed, Pedal Frequency) are active and within range.

  4. Choose the type of sensor you wish to pair. The device will scan for available sensors.

Operating Instructions

1. Basic Navigation

The device typically features a few buttons for navigation:

  • Power Button: Long press to power on/off. Short press to toggle backlight or confirm selections.
  • Up/Down Buttons: Navigate through menus or change displayed data fields.
  • Start/Stop Button: Start or pause recording a ride.

2. Display Modes and Data Fields

Your Blackbird bike computer can display various cycling data. The BB16 shows 3 data items per screen, while the BB16S shows 5. Common data fields include:

  • Speed (Current, Average, Max)
  • Distance (Trip, Total)
  • Time (Ride Time, Clock)
  • Altitude/Elevation
  • Heart Rate (Current, Average, Max - BB16S only)
  • Cadence (Current, Average, Max - BB16S only)
  • Calories
  • Temperature

Use the Up/Down buttons to cycle through different data screens or customize the data fields displayed on each screen via the settings menu.

3. Recording a Ride

  1. Ensure GPS signal is acquired (solid GPS icon).
  2. Press the Start button to begin recording your ride.
  3. During the ride, you can switch between data screens.
  4. To pause, press the Start/Stop button. Press again to resume.
  5. To end the ride, long press the Start/Stop button. The device will save the ride data.

4. Automatic Sleep and Auto-Pause

The device features automatic sleep and auto-pause functions to conserve battery and accurately record your ride data:

  • Auto-Pause: When you stop moving during a ride, the device will automatically pause recording. Recording resumes when you start moving again.
  • Automatic Sleep: If the device is inactive for a prolonged period (e.g., after a ride is finished and not turned off), it will enter a low-power sleep mode.

5. Data Synchronization

Synchronize and share your cycling records using the Blackbird cycling APP:

  1. Download and install the Blackbird cycling APP on your smartphone.
  2. Pair your bike computer with the APP via Bluetooth.
  3. The records are synchronized and uploaded to the APP.
  4. The APP supports FIT file export and sharing to other platforms.

Maintenance

1. Charging

The device uses a Type-C charging interface. Connect the provided USB Type-C cable to the charging port on the device and to a standard USB power source (e.g., computer, wall adapter). A full charge typically takes a few hours.

2. Waterproofing

The Blackbird bike computer has an IPX7 waterproof rating, meaning it can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. It is suitable for use in rain but should not be submerged for extended periods or used for diving.

3. Cleaning

Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the screen or casing.

Troubleshooting

  • Device won't turn on: Ensure the battery is charged. Connect to a power source and try again.
  • No GPS signal: Move to an open outdoor area away from tall buildings or dense foliage. Allow a few minutes for the device to acquire a signal.
  • External sensor not pairing (BB16S): Ensure the sensor is active, has fresh batteries, and is within range. Try restarting both the bike computer and the sensor.
  • Data not syncing to APP: Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone and the bike computer is paired with the Blackbird cycling APP. Check for APP updates.
  • Inaccurate data: Ensure the device is securely mounted and has a clear view of the sky for GPS. For BB16S, ensure external sensors are correctly installed and calibrated if applicable.
