6. Setup Instructions

Proper connection is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your inverter.

6.1. Placement

  • Place the inverter on a flat, stable surface.
  • Ensure there is adequate space around the inverter for proper ventilation. Do not cover the cooling fan or heat sinks.
  • Keep the inverter away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and areas with high humidity or dust.

6.2. Connecting to a Battery (Direct Connection)

For full power output, direct connection to a 12V battery is recommended.

Figure 3: Battery Connection Diagram

  1. Ensure the inverter's power switch is in the OFF position.
  2. Connect the RED battery clip cable to the positive (+) terminal of the 12V battery.
  3. Connect the BLACK battery clip cable to the negative (-) terminal of the 12V battery.
  4. Connect the other end of the RED cable to the positive (+) terminal of the inverter.
  5. Connect the other end of the BLACK cable to the negative (-) terminal of the inverter.
  6. Ensure all connections are tight and secure. Loose connections can cause overheating and damage.

6.3. Connecting via Cigarette Lighter (Low Power Applications)

For lower power devices, the inverter can be connected via a cigarette lighter socket. Note that the maximum power output will be limited by the vehicle's cigarette lighter circuit (typically 150W-200W).

Figure 4: Cigarette Butt Connection Diagram

  1. Ensure the inverter's power switch is in the OFF position.
  2. Insert the cigarette lighter plug into your vehicle's 12V cigarette lighter socket.
  3. Connect the other end of the cable to the inverter's input terminals (if applicable, or ensure it's a single unit).
  4. Ensure the connection is secure.

7. Operating Instructions

7.1. Powering On the Inverter

  1. After making all connections, turn on the inverter by flipping the power switch to the ON position.
  2. The LED displays for Battery Voltage and AC Voltage should illuminate, showing the current input and output voltages.
  3. The cooling fan may start briefly or run continuously depending on the internal temperature.

7.2. Connecting Appliances

  1. Plug your 220V AC appliance into one of the inverter's AC sockets.
  2. For USB devices, plug them into the available USB ports.
  3. Ensure the total power consumption of all connected appliances does not exceed the inverter's continuous power rating (1500W).

7.3. Powering Off the Inverter

  1. Before turning off the inverter, disconnect all connected appliances.
  2. Flip the power switch to the OFF position.
  3. If not in use for an extended period, disconnect the inverter from the battery.

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the exterior of the inverter with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use liquids or abrasive cleaners. Ensure cooling vents are free from dust and debris.
  • Connections: Periodically check all electrical connections to ensure they are tight and free from corrosion.
  • Ventilation: Always ensure the inverter has adequate airflow. Overheating can reduce performance and lifespan.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the inverter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

9. Troubleshooting

The Foval inverter is equipped with multiple protection features to ensure safety and prevent damage.

Foval Inverter Multiple Protection Features Diagram

Figure 6: Multiple Protection Features

  • Overload Protection: Activates when the load power is too large. Reduce the connected load.
  • Overcurrent Protection: Protects against excessive current draw.
  • Short Circuit Protection: Shuts down if a short circuit is detected. Check wiring and appliances.
  • High Voltage Protection: Engages if input voltage exceeds 15.5V. Check battery/charging system.
  • Low Voltage Protection: Engages if input voltage drops below 10.5V. Recharge or replace battery.
  • Over-temperature Protection: Activates when the inverter temperature is too high. Ensure proper ventilation and reduce load.
  • Reverse Polarity Protection: Protects against incorrect battery connections.

Common Issues and Solutions:

Problem: AC Voltage display shows '000' or AC socket not working, but USB ports are functional.
Solution: This typically indicates an issue with the AC output stage. Ensure the inverter is fully powered on and not in a protection mode. If the issue persists, it may require professional inspection.
Problem: Inverter fan does not rotate.
Solution: The inverter fan is temperature-controlled. It will only turn on when the inverter reaches a certain internal temperature to maintain stable operation. If the inverter is under light load or in a cool environment, the fan may not run.
Problem: Inverter shuts down unexpectedly.
Solution: Check the LED displays for error codes or indicators. This is often due to one of the protection mechanisms (e.g., low battery voltage, overload, overheating). Address the underlying cause (recharge battery, reduce load, improve ventilation).

10. User Tips

  • Understanding Inductive Loads: Some appliances (e.g., motors, compressors, refrigerators, microwaves) are 'inductive loads'. They have a much higher starting current/power (3-10 times their continuous rating) than their running power. Always ensure the inverter's peak power rating can handle the startup surge of such devices. Pure sine wave inverters are generally better suited for inductive loads than modified sine wave inverters.
  • Calculating Inverter Run Time: The approximate run time of your inverter can be estimated using the formula:
Time = (Battery Voltage * Battery Capacity * 0.9) / Total Power of Electrical Appliances
(Note: 0.9 is an approximate conversion efficiency. This is a theoretical calculation and requires a fully charged, new battery.)
  • Power Consumption: Be mindful of the total power consumption of all devices connected. For example, a hair dryer can consume significant power.
