Introduction
The Tecsun PL-398MP is a portable worldband receiver featuring dual speakers and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology. Beyond its radio capabilities, the PL-398MP also functions as a portable speaker with an integrated SD card reader and a line-in jack, allowing for MP3 playback. Powering the Radio
The PL-398MP can be powered by batteries or an external USB power supply.
- Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment on the rear of the radio. Insert 3 R6 (AA) batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Ni-MH rechargeable batteries can also be used.
- External Power Supply: Connect a USB DC 5V power adapter (≥250mA, not included) to the USB 5V DC-Jack (17) on the side of the radio. Smart charging of Ni-MH batteries is possible via this port.
Antenna
For optimal reception, extend the telescopic antenna fully when listening to FM or Shortwave bands.
SD Card Insertion
If using the MP3 player function, insert a compatible SD card into the SD card slot on the side of the radio.

Controls Overview
- Power: Turns the radio on/off.
- FM / AM (MW, LW) / SW Band Selector & Auto Tuning Storage (ATS): Selects the desired frequency band and initiates ATS function.
- VM & SCAN: Activates Volume Memory mode and scanning.
- VF & SCAN: Activates Variable Frequency mode and scanning.
- ETM (Easy Tuning Mode): Enables quick scanning and storage of stations.
- AM BW: Adjusts AM bandwidth.
- FM ST.: Toggles FM stereo mode.
- Display / Lock: Controls display backlight and locks/unlocks buttons.
- Time Set: Sets the current time.
- Alarm For Buzzer For Radio or MP3: Sets the alarm function.
- Delete: Deletes stored memories.
- Memory: Accesses stored radio stations.
- Light / Snooze: Activates display light or snooze function for alarm.
- FM / SW Antenna Jack: External antenna input for FM/SW.
- Line in Jack: Audio input for external devices.
- Earphone Jack: Connects headphones.
- USB 5V DC-Jack: Power input and charging port.
- Multifunctional Tuning Knob: Used for tuning frequencies and navigating menus.

Tuning Methods
The PL-398MP offers several ways to find stations:
- Tuning Knob (18): Rotate to manually adjust the frequency.
- Direct Keypad Entry: Enter the frequency directly using the numerical keypad.
- Memory (12): Recall previously saved stations.
- ATS (Auto Tuning Storage): Press and hold the Band Selector (2) to automatically scan and store strong stations in the current band.
- ETM (Easy Tuning Mode) (5): A unique feature for quickly scanning and storing stations, especially useful for shortwave.
Band Selection
Press the FM / AM (MW, LW) / SW Band Selector (2) to cycle through FM, MW, LW, and SW bands.
MP3 Player Functionality
The radio can play MP3 files from an SD card or an external device via the Line-in jack (15).
- SD Card Playback: Insert an SD card with MP3 files. Use the navigation buttons (PREV, NEXT, PAUSE/PLAY) located on the rear of the radio to control playback.
- Line-in Playback: Connect an external audio source (e.g., smartphone, MP3 player) to the Line-in Jack (15) using the provided audio cable.
Alarm Clock and Sleep Timer
The PL-398MP includes a 12/24-hour alarm clock and a sleep timer function. Refer to the Time Set (9) and Alarm (10) buttons for configuration.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Wipe the radio with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish.
Battery Care
When replacing batteries, ensure all batteries are of the same type and charge level. Do not mix new and old batteries, as this can lead to leakage or damage to the device. If the radio will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
Troubleshooting
- No Power: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are charged. If using external power, verify the USB cable and adapter are functioning correctly.
- Poor Reception: Extend the telescopic antenna fully. Try repositioning the radio or moving to an open area. For AM/MW/LW, rotate the radio for better signal.
- No Sound: Check the volume level. Ensure headphones are not connected if you expect sound from the speakers.
- MP3 Playback Issues: Ensure the SD card is inserted correctly and contains compatible MP3 files. Check the audio cable connection for Line-in playback.
