3. Setup Instructions
General Setup
- Unpack: Carefully remove the microphone and its accessories from the packaging.
- Mounting: Attach the microphone to a suitable microphone stand using the provided HM32 shock frame or microphone clip. Ensure the microphone is securely fastened.
- Positioning: Position the microphone in the desired location for measurement or recording. For room analysis, typically place it at the listening position or points of interest.
Powering the Microphones
- ECM-999: This microphone requires 9-52V phantom power. Connect the microphone to an audio interface, mixer, or preamplifier that provides phantom power via a standard 3-pin XLR cable. Ensure phantom power is activated on your device.
- ECM-888B: This microphone is battery-powered. It uses a 6V 4LR44 battery. To install the battery, carefully unscrew the lower part of the microphone body. Insert the 4LR44 battery with the correct polarity (+/-). Screw the body back on securely. The battery is not included due to air shipping restrictions.
Connecting to Equipment
Both microphones feature a 3-pin XLR connector. Use a high-quality XLR cable to connect the microphone to your audio interface, preamplifier, or measurement device. Ensure a secure connection to prevent signal loss or interference.

4. Operating Instructions
Once properly set up and connected, your Superlux measurement microphone is ready for use.
- Software/Hardware Configuration: Open your preferred audio analysis software (e.g., Room EQ Wizard, Smaart) or configure your hardware measurement device.
- Input Level Adjustment: Adjust the input gain on your audio interface or preamplifier to achieve an optimal signal level without clipping. Start with a low gain setting and gradually increase it.
- Calibration (Recommended): For accurate measurements, it is highly recommended to calibrate your microphone with your measurement system. Refer to your software or hardware manual for specific calibration procedures.
- Measurement/Recording: Proceed with your desired measurement or recording tasks. Due to their omnidirectional nature, these microphones capture sound equally from all directions, making them excellent for capturing the overall acoustic characteristics of a space.
5. Care and Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone body. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish or internal components.
- Storage: When not in use, store the microphone in its protective case to shield it from dust, moisture, and physical damage. Avoid extreme temperatures and high humidity.
- Battery Replacement (ECM-888B): Replace the 4LR44 battery in the ECM-888B when the performance degrades or if the microphone fails to power on. Always dispose of used batteries responsibly.
- Handling: Handle the microphone with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts, which can affect its delicate capsule and internal electronics.
- Moisture: Keep the microphone away from moisture and direct exposure to liquids.

7. User Tips
- Room Acoustics: For accurate room acoustic measurements, ensure the room is as quiet as possible and free from reflective surfaces near the microphone.
- Microphone Placement: When measuring, try to place the microphone at ear height in the primary listening position. For broader room analysis, take measurements at multiple points.
- Phantom Power Check (ECM-999): Always verify that phantom power is enabled on your audio interface or mixer when using the ECM-999.
- Battery Check (ECM-888B): Regularly check the battery level of your ECM-888B, especially before critical measurements or recordings, to avoid interruptions.
- Windscreen Use: Use the foam windscreen (if included) to reduce plosives and wind noise, especially in environments with air movement.
8. Troubleshooting
- No Sound/Low Output:
- Ensure all cables are securely connected.
- For ECM-999, verify phantom power is active on your audio device.
- For ECM-888B, check if the battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
- Increase the input gain on your audio interface/preamplifier.
- Distorted Sound:
- Reduce the input gain on your audio interface/preamplifier to prevent clipping.
- Ensure the microphone is not overloaded by excessively loud sound sources.
- Hum/Buzz Noise:
- Check for faulty or unshielded XLR cables.
- Ensure proper grounding of all audio equipment.
- Move the microphone and cables away from power sources, fluorescent lights, or other electronic devices that may cause interference.
- Inconsistent Readings:
- Ensure the microphone is stable and not vibrating.
- Minimize environmental noise and air currents during measurements.
- Recalibrate your measurement system.
